i always end up on my side... How do you fix that? And I can't really get the momentum to completely roll over... I'm a white belt in karate. I THINK it's Jiu Jitsu.
woww nice videos. I liked the FORWARD roll. I am trying to do it. But i still dont know how to do it from the STANDING position. Gues i gotta practise the one from the knees position first :)
Thanks a lot. I´m doing Aikido and that back roll just had me. I practiced after seing your video and now i have it. Greetings for south america annd 5 stars!!
I'm not sure. Suppose you attempt to keep your balance or step back when somebody pushes you. Your foot will already be in a crunched position, making it very difficult to accomplish his version of the backwards roll in time, UNLESS you anticipate needing to do it. You may want to compare this to other videos.
Different arts have different theories on how to do backwards rolls: ninjutsu, jiu jitsu and aikido all have their versions. One is not correct. I've used this roll many many times over the last 15 years and it has protected me well. Do what works for you. We never want to suggest that there is only one way to do things because we know there isn't.
The reason of why some people put the toes on ground is because you don't loose control, so you can go back to stand positions, and more important, to not hurt the knee when you hit the ground. It hurts a little at first, but is much better. Once you have put your knee on the ground you should then unbend your feet just like you do.
I'm a black belt, so I've also been through a lot of toe jabbing/spraining.. So the whole idea of absorbing the technique is a good idea.. Never thought of that (So easy to go fig)
I noticed that some people have strong necks and have no problem rolling directly over the neck like lots of wrestles do. Could the roll be based on the neck instead of the shoulder? I found I get much more pull/thrust when I do, and it is less direction/position specific. Any thought's?
wanna snap your neck?? Go Ahed, you never know when you might loose control... and your body weight will all come down on the neck,, i dont think anyones neck is ready for that type of pressure put on it.. so i really wouldn't say you do that.
If you mean rolling forward, then I know what your talking about. But I took jiu jitsu and there is another way to rolling forward. But some do things different. It's been awhile since I started. I reached yellow, and moved. To bad though, I really loved it.
i love your videos... me and my brother a lot of techniques and how to perform many submissions from them. we started taking a BJJ class and we thoroughly impress the coach and other students considering our only experience is rolling with each other and watching ur videos. in fact, my brother, at 13, 125lbs, submitted a 18 year old who weighted 180lbs with an armbar off his back. suffice to say, he was embarassed.
just because he's good in what he does he makes it look easy... you can't learn martial arts just by watching tutorial videos, they can help you though...
Thanks, bro. Your explanations helped a lot.

Do you teach your students to breathe out when they roll? It's a good habit to have. :)

It's NEVER a good idea to roll on your head or neck. Always try and avoid it.

Great stuff. I'm not exactly greased lightning when I roll, but your pointers have definitely dropped the number of times I get submitted.
