  • That is a good common sense video. I have hunted with some guys and they freekin stink after 10 days in a pop trailer. This video may have been uncomfortable for you however long over due for some folks. Great video's as we not expect but look forward to your incite.

  • wowowo go back a minute so your saying camping isn't just a way of not showering for a week? lol

  • Hi Dave. I really appreciate that you speak about this stuff because its important and not so popular or what, but critical to know. thank you, you taught me a lot.

  • try corn starch for chafing its so smoth

  • could you give a littel insight as to how you and mr lundean got a shoe together i was hopen thet would do a show with partners in the wilds but it was so nice the way your shoe came out and the man woman wild they were more than i could have hoped for when i and my cusine would go in the woods it was a lot like you and cody but without the exspertes of the two of you

  • dave you sir are a badass most tv stars just sit home and spend there money but your in the woods washing and peeing in a bucket yourmthe real deal and discover could not have picked a better person !!

  • thanks for the tips, subjects you dont see a lot!

  • Hey dave quick tip. Eggs are great to wash your hair with. It works like a conditioner for your hair and scalp.

  • keep up the vid good info

  • thanks for covering the chaffing a toilet seat would fit right on top of that 5 gal. bucket then you could crap in your bath tub:)

  • So what do you have tattooed on your stomach?

  • @maxwithpains that was the dry part of the towel

  • That's called Hoe bath, boy...

which you describe you pretty much. LOL

  • Very important subject. I felt refreshed just watching you wash up. Womens nails should be kept short too. Long nails are a haven for bacteria. Women in the medical industry are forbidden to have long nails.

  • 20p65s

  • I second that

  • put a box of baking soda, that's open, in your boots and it will make sure your boots are dry and also keep them from stinking.

  • And to help prevent chaffing, a little cornstarch before the hike goes a long way

  • @reelphresh Amen. That's an awesome trick I learned working in 100 degree kitchens! You never really know what the people cooking your food are up to!

  • aaaaah, an old fashioned whore's bath.

  • True about the redass ... Crippled me more then a few times. The last thing a mountain lion wants to smell is a stank human (especially with redass)

  • Hey Dave does body odor attract predators ie bears or mountain lions

  • I know it may be an unpleasant subject, but the red ass will stone cold put you down. If its bad enough, you are not walking anywhere.

  • no undies works best, hence the term "going commando", always good Dave

    -dilla

  • lulz i think for the next season of dual survival cody is going to be replaced by that bucket.

  • Once again with the hot rag. Steam the rag on the stove to kill the bacteria. Rinse and reheat the rag.

You're reapplying the bugs dipping into the same bucket.

    It's the bacteria that stinks.

  • I can't believe you never talked about Vinegar...Talk about multi uses. Plus it dates back.

  • @bobaloosb

Hannibal of Carthage Issued it as part of the rations to his troops

  • @DruidicRifleman

    Thanks for the comment!

  • I have to maintain my fingernails for playing guitar, and one tip I can share is nails grow back at different rates depending on how they're cut. Filed or bitten nails grow pretty quickly where clipped nails take a long time - worth clipping them as short as possible before going on an outdoor trip like this

  • Thanks for your ability to broach subjects that are necessary but often ignored buy normal conversation. This is exactly the kind of stuff that makes "roughing it" sustainable and not miserable.

  • In between your cheeks. Made me chuckle.

  • Can you use smoke to kill bacteria on your skin? I'm sure I could google it but i'll just wait for your response :-)

  • @SephEternal Last time I heard, smoke is most effective when you burn something that has medicinal properties. Just "smoking" your skin with something plain will only make things fly off (like flies etc.) and daze everything else (bacteria etc.) you would have to use the smoke for a long time to actually kill anything, So, burning things with medicinal properties would be your best bet at using smoke to kill bacteria.

Taking a charcoal bath would also be an effective way to kill bacteria.

  • @mistasho17 This is answered in journal 15

  • Great Video! always learn a ton from your videos. THX

  • Jesus! Is there anything you can't use tallow for?!?!

  • sweden loves you! at least i do hehe

  • How did you build the Yurt? What does it generally consist of?

  • Brasil watching here Dave... I love your videos!

  • Most people will think hygiene last or forget it altogether and the result is sore parts and sickness! Dry clean feet dusted or even some tallow might help. Thanks for the video..

  • Awsome vid man. Thank you so much.

  • Wow I don't think anyone has made a video on hygiene. Thanks.

  • I notice the pans are light weight. Have you tried cast iron pots/pans?

  • I thought he was gonna mentioned Cody

  • is there gonna be another season of dual survival?

  • Don't forget Apple Cider Vinegar Dave. It is even better than bleach for killing bacteria and fungus. I've used it for thirty years to rinse my body and hair after a shower and it stopped my athletes foot and kept my chaffing from erupting into something worse. Great to add to your rinse of clothes or dishes. You can dilute it for sensitive areas and stronger for cuts, scrapes and abrasions. If you have Honey just mix 1/1 in warm/hot water and it tastes a lot like hard cider and good for you.JJD

  • anti dandruff shampoo seems to help with chaffing alot, i dont know why, but a doc once mentioned it

  • It shouldn't be an embarrasing subject talking about Proper hygiene is super important! And you are right about trenchfoot and a lot of different issues.

  • Wash hair easily by using shampoo-conditioner in one. Squirt a generous quarter-sized dollop onto your palm, rub hands together, then daub scalp at hairline, crown and nape with the shampoo on DRY hair. Now scoop a handful of water where you daubed the shampoo and keep adding enough water until it lathers. Massage well. Take your rinse water and keep scooping handfuls from the nape to the front (bent forward, of course) until the water runs clear. One lather, 3 cups of water. Takes practice.

  • Cody is the hippie, and I had you pegged as the "hard tail". I guess if your shorts get to chappin', you go from "hard tail" to "lard tail." Ha! just kidding! My brother and I did have some good laughs envisioning deer tallow grease and wilderness leg pumping contests, though. Keep em' coming Dave. Thanks!

  • Moss and pine cones are good washing items too, but more in outdoors use :)

  • This was one of your best videos man ..Great info all around :)

  • Over 1000 people are watching you shower! lol No shame in the Canterbury game!

  • Mix baking soda and salt to brush your teeth.

Add baking soda to your wash water. Cleans and deodorizes.

Baking soda is great to wash hair.

Use baking soda to wash your rags and clothes with soap or without soap.

Use baking soda to wash dishes, utensils, sink. Great grease remover.

A tea spoon of baking soda for heart burn.

Sprinkle baking soda in boots to remove odors.

  • Hey man you can also wash your hair with baking soda. I do it when I run out of shampoo/soap. The way the individual baking soda particles are shaped, they're rounded. So they're effective but also gentle. Mix it with a bit of water and boom, instant mouthwash. Can also be used for deodorant. Just throwing it out there :-).

  • thanks for sharing, good info, thank you for not sharing too much also! LOL

  • Good idea for a topic and well done as usual. Thanks.

Australian aboriginals, traditionally cleaned their teeth with charcoal. I've done that a few times when bushwalking in remote places.

  • YES. This is what I watch when I feel like watching this :D

  • Good stuff, Dave. Thanks for taking the time to share it. God bless. John

  • Hi Dave, I´ve discovered your journal series just yesterday and it helped me keeping my mind and feelings up, because we had to let our beloved dog put down yesterday and after that, your videos came just right for me. Your strong and positive personality was exactly what I needed after this. Thank you! -Parzival from Germany

  • Great advice Dave. I have been doing colonial reenacting for about 11 years now. And living out of a tent for 2 weeks at a time really helps you develop a system for everyday needs from cooking and cleaning to health care. And I have found that you really start to appreciate the minimalistic ideals and mutiple uses for items. Packing and traveling to the Alafia rendezvous in FL and other gathering events really helps me appreciate the need to stay as compact as possible.

  • Great advice, thanks <3

  • Dave, what happend to the flimsy china thing called a fireplace? I see you have som homemade style owen now.

  • How do you go about cutting toe nails in your situation. Ingrown nails can become quite a pain.

  • Have you considered a sauna. I've heard they are good for opening the pores and cleaning the skin. Then just rinse with clean water after that. I don't think I'll ever be metal enough to use snow.

  • @colddrake80 I sure can recommend sauna and if Dave ever comes to Finland I'll be more than happy to introduce different types of saunas for him.

  • You gotta season that stovetop bro.

  • Lube up the wear points, that makes perfect sense. Don't know why it FREAKED me out.

Little pinch o bear fat tween yer cheeks & bum, pure non chaffin pleasure.

  • I saw in a video (not sure if it was yours or not) that wool has self-cleaning properties. If you used a wool rag as a wash cloth, would this help clean up? -rob

  • Usually if I do any kind of serious packing my fat thighs rub together and chaff like crazy. I've discovered that my son's diaper rash cream works like a miracle once that starts. Thanks for letting us know that tallow works too.

  • this really hit alot of good points. for me i was in a crash 6 years ago and lost my job 2 years ago. my teeth are crap need fake ones. shit happens. i am allergic to alot of stuff and if i were in the bush without my kit is there anything i can use to help me out? i have 6 pair of redhead hunting wool socks from bass pro shops 9 bucks i belive. and they are heaven.

  • UV light kills much of the bacteria that a toothbrush incubates in the home. I keep my tooth brush on the dash of the car will brush my teeth when driving.I use deodorant between my legs I never have chafing and I weigh 350. Good LED lights are conservative bc they are not always on I constructed a light sensor that made noise each cycle and a good LED light will humm in front of the censor the cheaper ones will click once when turned on click when turned off it is why some can last 160 hours.

  • Canterbury for President.

  • @20p65s absolutely. i would vote this guy president of the northern hemispere. he could give cody the southern hemisphere.

  • My Mom called it a "Cat Bath".

  • Dave, it was really nice when you sat in the yurt with your laptop and answered comments from this series. I wish you would try to do that every evening. It would be awesome! I know that your connection is poor, but maybe Ms Iris could print them out for you daily. Just a thought.

  • Dave How many days have you been in that yurt? Obviously its been at least 4 days...........26 more to go??

  • Dave, thanks for putting it in simple language so we can all understand.

  • I have to agree This is an important subject which is never covered and is taken for granted in today's lifestyle. Excellent video!

  • What are some ways to treat foot fungus in the woods? Also, even though it isn't priority, are there any natural deodorants to keep the stink at bay till the next bath?

  • What kind of candle is that, It seems brite.

  • Thanks for the vid Dave...excellent as always!

Just curious about what kind of watch you're wearing?

  • I hope there's a journal of the yurt 43467 someday.

  • @hecktor15 Yes, I wish Dave would live for another hundred years as well,

  • @hecktor15 me too!:)

  • monkey butt sucks. Thanks for covering the sensitive subjects.

  • This truely an awesome series! Hey whats the story behind all your tat's ???

  • but physicly fit Santa whos supervising the elfs

  • It's amazing watching this series, the amount of things that we have in everyday life that we use and take for granted, do we really need all of the clutter that are not "essential items", I bet we could all fill a skip or two each with crap that we never use but have had for years. Great video Dave keep us posted and keep up the good work.

  • hey dave, wouldnt you consider having a container with vaseline? it can be use for so many things and i think it can help with the chaffing dilema lol. i would like for you to comment on it on one of your videos if you have the chance. thank you and God bless.

  • Glad we didn't see you washing your meat and two veg I was having a sandwich . :)

  • @doublegit Good ol' Dave. Thorough as always.

  • What does iris think of you spendin so much time out in the bush/yurt? Does she visit you? My wife would be pissed if I left for the woods as much as you do. Glad your able to though, keep it up!

  • I look forward to every path finders "cribs".

  • Skinny ppl don't chafe and commando is the only way to go!

  • Love this series Dave, please keep updating daily!!

  • I'm starting to think that the bucket is the key to this whole yurt thing.

  • washing your feet before bed makes them warm up nice and toasty!!!!

  • Dave when you get bored in the yurt you should do a video on how to prepare beaver, fox or coyote hides for trading. maybe this would go along better in your longhunter series. also maybe show us how to make traditional raw hide for cordage, maybe even how to tan a deer hide or something along those lines.

  • Watch that candle over there lol that cotton will only take a spark

  • Dave, had a quick gear tip, kinda off subject,I wear t shirts under all my shirts but i cut the sleeves off first,, I began saving the sleeves when I figured out they made great headbands in the cold to keep my ears warm, or a good hank, or any other things a bandana would be used for..

  • This is good...even with less use of rescources to complete this task than normally advised in the manuals you seem to manage to maintain a decent enough level of hygiene...but don't forget to give yourself a treat once a while if you're staying outside like this long enough.Like a bucket and mug shower.

  • You may think its boring to look at a guy sitting in a portable home and doing daily activities, but this is an addictive reality show! Thank you Dave.

  • Dave, I learn so much every time I watch one of your videos. You have and continue to shape the way I view wilderness reliance and outdoor living. Thanks for producing quality videos that contain educational information. You did a wonderful job in this video of helping me understand the value of personal care and hygiene in a wilderness or survival situation.

  • Sometimes the day-to-day logistics can be the most important and most interesting when talking about a sustained existence outdoors. Another great video, thank you.

  • Not a popular topic but a very important one. sleeping commando helps with healing chaffing and taking off the boots and socks as often as possible helps with the foot fungus. Dry socks, dry socks , dry socks can't be said enough.

    thanks dave

  • @snappydog357 About dry socks : It's raining up here in Canada, instead of snowing, and even with good rain gear I get soaking wet in my 15 miles bike ride to the job every day. But I've noticed that no matter how wet I can get, I could just keep going for many more hours just cause my feet are really well protected, therefore dry.

So now that I've experienced it so efficiently, I can only repeat the same words : dry socks guys, dry socks!

  • Dave as you and I are old school. I find it interesting how many young people dont or wont go without underwear in the bush. They dont or wont change socks and dont like to go without underwear. Maybe you could point out the reasons NOT to wear underwear. (even when not in the jungle) LOL. Keep it real brother. Love the longhunter and tree series. I like the "live from the yurt". You have come a long way from the old days of soup cans and carharts in the shed...lol

  • Dave how did folks back in the day remove foreign objects from there eye and if you scratch it in the process what can you do to sooth it in the field? I know you have some doctor skills I remember a video in which you stitched yourself up...now that was bad ass! Thanks

  • Going along with a2eric1's comment would you consider showing how to make a solar shower in the bush? I've used everything from actual Coleman Solar Shower bags to trash bags and recently I even used 2 Platypus water containers which worked surprisingly well in ~45-50F suny weather.

Another great video and thank you especially for bringing up chafing, it's an unavoidable part of life for almost everyone and it has to be taken care of. Not controlling it can result in infectious boils.

  • Another idea (outside the scope of this long hunter series) is to install a regular hose bib or sil-cock at the low side of the bucket, just up from the bottom. Hang the bucket overhead outside, crack the spigot and enjoy a nice shower. The spigot shouldnt interfere too much with the other uses of the bucket. -Great series of vid's !!!!

  • @a2eric1 i've been looking for a camp type shower for about a month, and i've been avoiding the commercial ones at walmart. i might have to try that, it sounds like a good idea.

  • Dave what about Soap Root i have used it in the bush several times works good. Also Birch leaves when adjitated produce a soap also.

  • never thought I wasn't awkward with a man talking how he takes a bath... but rater interested..

  • You can use ashes to brush your teeth with too, the Bushmen in Africa use ash and twigs to brush with...Great Vid!

  • Wow Dave you must be reading my mind.I was just saying not many people cover Hygiene in the bush and its very important as in the bush as it is at home. It can be the diff. between making it out or not.Foot fungus and many other things do to bad Hygiene can put ya down and make self rescue impossible. Great vid glad ya covered it.

  • a whores bath, that's what we women in my family call it! It works well. Great video on hygiene, but I still can't get over the bucket. I am on the fence about that bucket.

  • I laughed so hard when you said you had to take care of your feet. All I could think of was Cody yelling at you and trying to get you to not wear shoes, so your feet can be truly healthy. I love you guys together I bet you have a lot of laughs when you have free time together. Well Merry Christmas Dave and happy holidays too. Best wishes to your family and to you.

  • Great Serie, Mr. Dave! Take care, Sepp

  • what kind of wood stove is that...m1950?

  • don't forget your towel

  • i noticed the top of your stove is awful rusty. Ever think about seasoning it like cast iron? I don't know if that would work but i figure if it's getting rusty you could. I don't know how to do it either. Definately do it during the day time so you don't get smoked out of the yurt or attract animals.

  • Look into "No Rinse" shampoo and soap. Sold at medical supply stores.

  • I noticed you painted the stove pipe.

  • the real Super Dave !

  • its a cat bath. (the wash with just the rag). now you have something to call it lol

  • Dave if I were you I would buy an old trailer it would be perfect for the yurt and would free up room in you car/truck for more gear

  • A good nail clipper should be in with your hygiene kit.

  • @bobsr3 I use the scissors on my multi tool for that sharp and works good for nail clipping.

  • Would putting ash in the water for cleaning yourself be a good substitute for soapy water?

  • Great vid brother touched some important subjects that not a lot of ppl do great info love the Yurt can't wait till winter basic

  • Good points here. Thanks Dave for covering some of the topics others won't mention.

  • oh boy. i certainly hope a latrine-use video is NOT next.

  • Thank you! Without a doubt I have learned more from this series than anything I have watched on the subject thus far.

  • I don't use underwear! yay

  • Hey Dave, is there anymore Deul survival coming on. I am glad you are doing a lot more videos. I can remember when you 1st came on here. They would think you were homeless now. Hahaha

  • Thanks for covering this important topic.

  • How about a smoke bath to kill bacteria when you are not in the yurt. I have used this with cedar before and it kills the bacteria under your arms, and in the groin area quite well. I was wondering when the hygiene part was going to air, nice job covering all aspects of it, and a big thank you for not showing us you washing your crotch, or greasing up your ass.

  • thanks brother Dave!

  • I just love how you cover everything. You use each tool you carry so many times it's nice to see all the uses for them. Thanks brother.

  • why a plastic bucket?why not a steel or tin bucket...

    thanks for showing

    kind regards

    streetartist

  • @utubeworms your teeth! Sheesh. Damn you people are a pretentious bunch. For the most part bushcrafters are helpful and a decent people but all of a sudden everyone's an expert and knows better or has an opinion, when you have your own show them tell him how he should do shit. Oh and the world is not going to fucken end, so let's get back to it being about bushcraft and being generally prepared for disasters or what not. Paranoid tools.

  • I have a suggestion for a video, A good discussion on hyponatremia (lack of salt in your body) and what is the importance of salt and where to find sources of salt in wild edibles. Since this condition could very easily sneak up on you in a long term situation especially if you are frequently expending and replenishing fluids.

  • @rabmarine1 I second that. Great idea!

  • @rabmarine1: Good idea man, that topic is so important ( potentially life or a slow progressive march to death in a long term situation) and I have yet to see it addressed in a youtube vid by anyone. I believe The SAS Survival Handbook, by Lofty Wiseman, addresses it, but not too in depth. Hand in hand is the danger of eventually developing and iodine deficiency and all of the other things that go along with it, maybe a good topic for a combined video.

  • I use a 50% solution of some sort of alchohol, on stinky areas and behind ears, when possible. Burns when it hits your groin but kills any bacteria and can retard any fungus.

    ... when possible.

  • Nice information Dave! I love this series! You can even brush your teeth with soda if you needed too!

  • One thing I have done in the past to semi brush my teeth is to chew a small piece of charcoal and rub my teeth the fine grit works about the same as toothpaste it leaves a gritty unpleasant texture and your teeth will look black until you rinse with plain water. Thanks for your videos Dave, Keep up the good work

  • Every boy in America needs to watch this video. I would rather my son know this than studying "Heather has two mommies." Remember to teach your kids how to take care of themselves.

  • Why not use coconut oil? It has disinfection properties, it's good for the skin and it's natural.

It's also multi purposeful because you can and should eat it and you can start or maintain fire with it... It's actually a very good survival item in general.

  • @BravingTheOutDoors Try to find a Coconuttree in the Eastern Woodlands.... ;o) But Brother you´re right with the use of Coconut Oil or Fat

  • How would you trim your fingernails in the bush without clippers?

  • thanks for sharing dave. and your right most other people just mention bathing but dont actually tell you a good way or how important it is.... oh and thanks for not taping and showing us the part about chaffing

  • That looks like a Canadian military issue desert tan scarf. Yeah finally something Canadian!!!

  • So many things in this video I wouldn't have even thought to ask, let alone been willing to. You rock, Dave. I wonder if anyone might be bothered by the adhesive from the tape, sticking a needle that was in contact with it under their nails. I take it from your first aid approach that duck tape doesn't bother you? I know it irritates my skin, and I suspect using a needle in the exact manner you do would as well.

  • Hey Dave, Love your vids. I figured this hygiene segment would make a good time to talk about tics. Im up in the northern bay area and I know tics are something to watch for out this way. I also understand them to be a problem along the app. trail out your way. thanks for time and effort to inform in your vids.

  • @TheLaurenharry im for massachusetts and i am in the woods and fields every day and i have not seen a tick in a cuple weeks. the cold has taken care of them for the most part so it should not be a problem, atleast untill spring

  • A warm saltwater solution used like a mouthwash helps to prevent infection from injuries in the mouth. It could also be used as a substitute for toothpaste. Salt---a multi-purpose item.

  • @showhow21 Disinfection is key, but baking soda gives you a scouring action that salt water does not. Very good idea for when you don't have it, though.

  • @showhow21 can also be applied to cuts, skin eruptions to dry them out.

  • @showhow21 lol my brother washes his teeth with salt ^.^

  • @showhow21 If you have an injury you can also soak it in saltwater solution and it will help heal the wound faster. It is about as fast as any ointment. Thanks for the video Dave
