  • I think Mrs. Slocumb is a good looking woman with a great shape. I don't know why people on the show are always insinuating that she's fat and/or ugly. I dont get it.

  • Interesting that Peacock has a long life line, seeing as Frank Thornton is still alive and kicking at 91. I'd stay away from trains if I were him tho...

  • It's not anal retentive to recognise that while this show is memorable and funny, racially, it is offensive. To ignore that is your own choice, but it doesn't make it go away, and to suggest that its an American issue is insulting. Only privileged people can ignore it... not the people who are on the receiving end of it, and I say that as a fan.

  • @yummieyummie123 To be fair, though, in the 1970s casual racism (way worse than this - as in, minstrel-show level) was kinda acceptable.

  • @Ascyltos ok, but "acceptable" and "correct" and "right" are not synonymous.

  • @yummieyummie123

Couldn't put it any better. Thank you.

  • @PorknBeanJuice no problem dude. :)

  • Why is the bottom of the screen cropped?

  • Scusi! Phony Lingi. My fav line of that episode

  • Captain Peacock-"you must understand that this gentleman is Japanese ..and he has difficulty getting his tongue around his RRRRRRssssss"----Mr. Humphries-"you know....I would of thought it was a matter of practice!!"

  • @tapeduk I love this show memories for me as a kid loved it:)

  • "...Shirts, Socks, ipads, underwear and shoes, going up..." (0:14)

didn't know they had ipads back in '75 lol

  • @SuperSkyster shirts, socks, ties, hats, underwear and shoes....but it does sound like ipads hehe!

  • The secretary is hot.

  • hiliarous

  • Humphries was quite correct... Frank Thornton DOES live longer than any of them!

  • @sillybabybunnies Rumbold is still alive.

  • This show helped me through 10 weeks of arduous bar prep!! Love every single one of the original cast!

  • Humphries to Peacock: "You have a very long lifeline." I bet he didn't know how true that was since Frank Thornton has outlived them all except Nicholas Smith and Mike Berry.

  • its funny watching this now, and how big beret's are. I love this show!

  • Tolerance is only relative to YOUR, point of view......Funny is funny, God bless the British, unvarnished point of view....

  • Thank you to all, who have the capacity to discern, what is purely comedy vs. mean spirited racism....This is comedy, sorry for those who cannot see thru their insecurity, to discover, we all have stereotypical roles that amuse and befuddle one another...Greatest comedy ever, Lighten up viewers......

  • @MrWill99313 I don't think the British have the anal-retentiveness that we Americans do. It's not mean-spiritedness; it's just comedy, plain and simple. We should just enjoy it at face value and not read into it. Life was better when we didn't have "sensitivity training" even minute of the day!

  • @MarkSentMe And enjoy I do!!!....Im not pc at all. THE FUCKING UNITED NATIONS CREATED POLITICAL CORRECTNESS...FUCK THE UN....

  • @MarkSentMe

let me guess, you're a caucasian male?

  • @PorknBeanJuice No, but thanks for asking. ;)

  • Hillarious, How this British comedy, elevates the menial job into a position of self righteousness.....and smugness. One of the best shows ever on TV....Thanks for posting...

  • "Mind that you don't melt your nail varnish!" -bitchy smirk-

Is it just me or was that kind of out of character and totally nasty and uncalled for? lol

  • " He sounds like a Japanese with his head stuck in a bucket"

  • "Ahh Laincoat"------AHHHHHHH SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

  • He might not like Lady Floorwalkers, how about Lady Streetwalkers??

  • That Public Service Announcement poster about cigarette smoking on the wall behind Captain Peacock is pretty graphic. I wouldn't want to eat with that hanging over my head!!

  • @MarkSentMe I could only read a portion of it, where was it that u were able to read it? (time still)

  • @bettypro from 11:56 to 15:36 "Every time you inhale a cigarette tiny particle of nicotine and other chemicals are left inside your lungs. The tiny particles gradually build up into an oily tar that irritates your lungs...til they become clogged or infected....septic....mixture of tar...pus...susceptible to crippling incurable diseases." The dot-dot-dots are what I couldn't read.

  • reading through a few of the comments really shows how fuckin retarded most people on Youtube are...

  • R.I.P David Croft the co-creater of this hilarious show. those were the days :)

  • Honestly, It wouldn't surprise me. If there are some racist undertones. Seeing as the British fought the Japanese in world war 2. Old habits, Die hard,

But, At the same time. I don't think the soul purpose of the Asian man is to be racist.

I just think, It is supposed to be hilarious, Which it was.

But, I also think. Regardless of how the Asian is looked at. Whether it be Racist or not. I think, In 2011 we should be able to get past it, Just watch it for what it is, Not for what it could be

  • @BodomTranquilityWorm Asians have deragatory terms for whites, so dont go thinking racism is a one way street, only going with the white man...Read and learn before condemning the British or White Americans!!!!

  • @BodomTranquilityWorm It is hilarious, but certainly, nobody could get away with this type of thing today ... though if there are any Brits posting here, perhaps they could let me know if this sort of humour is still allowed on British TV?

I don't know if it's racism or just the type of humour that was allowed (at least back then) ... did you ever see the Fawlty Towers episode involving the German visitors?

    :-D

  • @copper4copper No fucking way, Miss Brahms always has, Always hold the title of the most attractive person, On Are you being served?

  • Holy hell, Miss Brahms is so fucking sexy! It's a shame, She is dead. She was one fine looking woman!

  • @copper4copper i wouldn't kick him out of my wok

  • I prefer to use my pencil the taste of the wood takes my mind off the coffie rofl XD

  • What a long lifeline, hmmm, loooks like he could read palms, Frank Thornton is 90 year old.

  • @7754349200 is he that old already?? wow! not many left are there...

  • The crocheted beret scene [and others like it, for example, in Cold Store when Lucas sold those cooking mitts] make me wonder...if they price things themselves, what's stopping them from taking the extra? I know it's untruthful and technically stealing, but if they sold something that was £5 for £20, do they pocket the extra £15 under the table? And how would the management be any the wiser?...would make the cost of living a bit easier, plumping out their miniscule commission.

  • @StoliDassah I would think they take it in as comission., as long as they are making a sale why not....lol

  • @StoliDassah They would probably get the commission on the extra money. But seeing the overall low-budget of the store, they probably couldn't pull that off for very long. They mostly sold underwear, socks and off-the-rack suits. So gouging the customer in order to pad their commission could backfire.

  • Well Im in Japan right now, and my Japanese friends find it hilarious.

  • the first scene in the cantine....

  • Miss Ainsworth is quite a little cupcake.

  • are you being served is 1 of my favourite shows british comedy from the 70s puts some of the shows today to shame.

  • "Whatee wantee?"

  • "he has difficulty getting his tongue round his 'r's"

"i would've thought it was just a matter of practice"

LMFAO! man, the innuendo and language play on this show is epic.

  • Captain Peacock's approach of Mr Nash across the floor always reminds me of a barracuda approaching meat...LOL

  • LOLZ pause at 5:50 xD Lucas

  • Nah...I have a sense of humor, but the racist stuff was way overdone. And I LOVE these guys, this is my all time fave show.

  • @cuttock : Well, it was the 1975 --- I guess people were thinking different then.

  • @aidanbard

Yes, old chap, thats true. I wonder if Asians watching it then were hurt, like they would be now. Gays now dont like campy types, like Mr. Humphries. But I laugh a the gay jokes. I am not perfect either.

  • @cuttock: I wonder how many Asians actually watched it back then -- I can't really get around the fact this was before I was born so feels like a long time ago.

i did wince at the Japanese jokes. But did notice this, even now, people do mix up Chinese and Japanese.

  • @aidanbard mistaking Chinese for Japanese is like mistaking a British person with an Australian person. Theres no real reason for offence, when thought of like that.

  • @cuttock there is no rascist stuff you sound like the kind of person who would think it would be rascist for me to cut in line in front of a black dude that's the problem with society nowadays everyone has to be careful about offending even though i dont really care who i offend simply because i am not going to change the way i am just because some stuffy jerk in a suit who can't run a country says to, i still think a woman's place is in the kitchen and the home.

  • @Mst3kfanatic1 Learn to use punctuation before replying to me, thanks.

  • @cuttock oh very nice trying to dodge my question by trying to insult me very mature asshole.

  • This show is so funny i nearly choked to laughing watching this

  • Mrs slocombe is so funny when she is so serious

  • uh... the japanese dont pronounce L's. They dont have a problem with the R's.

  • @herbnaga Actually, the Japanese can have difficulty with both "L" and the English "R", as neither occur in Japanese. The closest sound sounds halfway between L and R. I think I heard it when Mr Katou called Mr Lucas "Mr るcas". However, he seemed to have learned how to pronounce the L, but he put it into the wrong words: "Credit" and "Rain". I think you thought they could pronounce our R because らりるれろ are romanised as ra ri ru re ro, as those Japanese sounds are a little closer to r than l.

  • @JoshDH0 You know, now that you mention it, when i hear them say the names the begin with "r" it does sound like an "l" is in there. Good to knwo. Thank you for the education. :)

  • @JoshDH0

I have to say, that is about the best quick explanation I've ever read. Thank you for posting. I didn't expect to learn anything reading youtube comments, but I did today!

P.S. it reminds me of watching Gilligan's Island when I was a kid (i.e. the episode with the Japanese soldier who doesn't know the war is over) and wondering about the truth behind the stereotype.

  • Mr. Humphfries forever!

  • The part about Captain Peacock's long lifeline was sure accurate since he is still alive after everyone else on the show has died.

  • Comment removed

  • @pspboy7 Actually Mr Rumbold (Nicolas Smith) is still alive aged 77. That's the same age that Mr Lucas (Trevor Bannister) would have been later this year! Mr Humphries (John Inman) would have been 76 this year making him really a year younger than 'young Mr Lucas'!

  • I have to admit the Japanese part was funny, but they actually don't talk as bad as all that. The British tend to be a bit stuck up when it comes to certain races. I know because I have some friends from England and they admit that. All part of being from a former world empire and all I guess.

  • @pspboy7 It's a good job that you're above such stereotyping isn't it?

  • @pspboy7

Well some do some dont... depends on the person :/

They could have had a Japanese character with perfect English but then half the jokes would be gone

  • @pspboy7 yes put down the brits you so are not above stereotypes.

  • awesome. thanx for uploading

  • Sooooo....

  • Trevor Bannister is dead ? when that happen so is peacock the last one standing ?

  • @GunMetalGrey009 As everyone else is saying, only teh upper class-types are still standing. Peacock and Rumbold. :0 I WISH HUMPHRIES WAS STILL ALIVE <3

  • RIP Trevor Bannister... Mr. Lucas will be missed.

  • I've always wondered: who takes care of the floor when the whole crew is at lunch?

  • @PsyCouture I believe in a different episode it mentioned that the store closed for lunch.

  • Looks like Mr Peacock's palm reading came through. He's still alive today at age 90

  • TV was a lot funnier when everything wasn't so PC. You couldn't get away with this kind of stuff today. (Don't get me started on the 'Roots' episode.LOL!)

This show is such a treasure. Again thanks for posting! :D

  • @Saywardstudio I have that episode posted on my account, they won't show it on American TV

  • @Saywardstudio true i bet i would get in loads of trouble for making a movie showing that freed black men in the south owned black slaves as well.

  • "Go home, go home." LAMO

  • THANKS SO MUCH!! :) i love this show

  • Thank you mtwini09 for uploading these little gems, there fantastic!

  • Whatee wantee?

  • I heard a fart!

  • Kind of a one of the more racially ambiguous episode... er, borderline racist...

  • @blythebee1987

who cares if its racist or not, it's funny as hell.

and as a gay man i'm not offended at all by mr. humphfries flamboyant style. it's just silly fun

  • @bornagain4virgin nor me mate, its all awesome :D

  • @bornagain4virgin - theres nothing really racist here at all - that foreign customer is as ignorant as any british tourist on holiday - expecting and presuming everyone to speak english - accept in this case the customer expects and assumes the staff are entirley aware and knowlegdeable of his customs culture and language.

but atleast he's trying - more than what any british customer would do abroad!

  • @bornagain4virgin Honestly, I have to agree, That Mr.Humphries Flamboyancy is not even close to offensive, Too be honest, I'm a Homophobic male, I usually wont even give something a chance, If it has a gay man in it. But, Mr humphries is fucking hilarious, I'm not offended either, By him. /

Which speaks volumes, Mr humphries is fucking hilarious

  • @bornagain4virgin Is it racist? or prejudiced?........I find it contemporary and appropriate for the era....Thanks for your open mind.....Liberals are a tolerant lot...

  • @MrWill99313 Your definition of tolerance is asinine.

  • @TriscuitFan So if the world doesn't see it your way, you asign, "judgement" Who died and made you Queen? Your just the typical, anal retentive, knee jerk asshole, I was trying to, walk a tightrope for....

  • @TriscuitFan "you shall go to the ball"........lol....Shall we adjust your medication madame?

  • @TriscuitFan I think your jealous that I hit truth right on the head. Should I be wrong do respond in kind, If you can keep from wettin yourself.....

  • @TriscuitFan Your not very, "tolerant", If you claim to truly understand the meaning, and cast doubt on others authenticity....May I get you a "lain" coat?........."Nip fell down the stairs, all the way to haberdashery".....LOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOL>......

  • @TriscuitFan As punishment, I order you to spend a week with Mr. Mash.......eeeeeee,eeeee,,,eehhh..Would you like a bottle of Scotch off the Lorie?.......lighten up.....You might just get over that constipation.....

  • @blythebee1987 they needed some way to introduce Mr. Humpheries talent, and needed someone who didn't understand him [didn't speak English well]...so if it wasn't that character, it would have been someone else. Slightly offensive? Maybe. Racist? Hardly.

  • I LUV Humphries in this episode omg

  • 11:22 "That nip that fell down the stairs..." tsk tsk tsk, Mr. Mash.
