I think the Lake Shore Limited needs an overhaul, along the lines of its famous forebear the "20th Century Limited", except with brighter colors and better technology - and an updated name, too - after all, it's no longer the twentieth century...
Took the LSL from Syracuse to Chicago back in October and it was one of the nicest trips I've ever taken. If their traveling hours weren't so weird I'd take it all the time.
Cool when I rode the Lakeshore back in April they had the new consist with the diner lite but they were also deadheading a heritage diner on the back behind the New York heritage baggage car.
Amtrak will be restoring full dining car service to the Lake Shore Ltd. as soon as Beech Grove shops restore the Viewliner dining car back to service, and send a few more Heritage Fleet diners for overhaul as well. Amtrak plans to purchase new dining cars as well, along with baggage, baggage-dormitory and sleeping cars.
Depends on where you're coming from and going to. If you aren't in any hurry I would definitely take the train. Way more fun. You get to meet a lot of interesting people and see some interesting sites along the way.
I used to ride on Amtrak with my family from New York , New York to Anniston Alabama. The last time I was on Amtrak, we road in a Coach. The one thing I hated so much was whenever my Mom or one of my brothers wanted to go to the diner from the Coach, I would get up and go with them and then there's that small area on the end of that coach, you know the area where you get on or exit the coach, and then it's the same way until the diner and then going back.
I had a memoral expirience on the Heritage dining cars. I had to make a reservation. I waited three hours for a $10 rubber burger. Though we made reservations, three hours ago, 2 other people sat with us, isn't this the point of a reservation? to ensure we have a seat?
one question, if u get assigned coach seats and there is a free Viewliner roomete can you go to it? im gonna ride the Crescent thursday and i dont wanna get in trouble if i do that
I wouldn't try it. Each sleeping car has an attendant who keeps track of all the rooms and would likely kick you out. Better off just staying in coach.
That sucks. Amtrak is definitely downsizing and cutting everything down. I'm surprised they're in business anymore. But I'm going to have to ride the Acela once if the company goes bottoms-up.
Its a former smoking lounge in an amfleet 2 lounge, not a crew rest area... Some amfleet 2 lounges have original configurations, while others just have the new diner lite conversions.
The dining car looks nicer than I thought because I have never seen the interior of it. Were the viewliners in front of the dining car? Anyway, fantastic video!!!!!
They were. But because I was not a first class passenger, I was not allowed to go inside any of the sleeper cars. Though I probably could have had I tried...
I got on board and waited, 2 hours at Albany to finally depart and the diner was closed. It was out of service and didn't open up until the next morning. They made everyone go down to the lounge car, which was overwhelmed with people. We were supposed to ask for the box dinner as 1st class passengers but I said screw it. This was not one of the better Amtrak experiences but I did like the Viewliners.
I was coming home to Buffalo from New York City. This particular video was shot while the train was stopped in Albany to load passengers from the Boston section of the train and to switch engines.
It dissapointing to hear the lake shore limited no longer has dining cars. I've rode on the Downeaster, Acela Express, and Acela Reigional. I live in Boston so I was always looking forward to going on the Lake Shore Limited and eating in the Dining Car. I have relatives who live in Olympia, WA so may'be some day if I can somehow afford it I can take the lake shore limited, Empire Builder, and talgo to visit them.
I am going to write a letter to Amtrak complaining about their removal of the dining cars on the Lake Shore Limited, and maybe you could too. I heard from someone today that the "new" diner-lites are just awful, no better than airline food. The only way Amtrak will ever consider reinstating dining cars on the Lake Shore Limited will be if they hear complaints from potential customers.
why are they getting rid of the diner car are they replacing them is it just the superliner or heritage diners?

A chaperone for a group of kids said that, not me. I said "excuse me" several times during that video.

canesfan471 3 years ago
It was very nice. Sadly, dining cars are no longer used on the Lake Shore Limited. Amtrak now uses converted Amfleet II lounge cars as "Diner-Lites."

Why would the company go bottom they've had record breaking passengers for the past 6 years.

I love riding that train, great vid! At 2:18 where you said "i dont know what this is" it is an area for the crew to sit.

It now does cause removed them apperaently do to the holidays I believe. There is an Amtrak forum that talks about that.

The enclosed area in the lounge car is an old "smoking" lounge area where passengers could smoke before it was banned from the trains.
