no air support - grounded by fog in England. Monty the planner failed to take that into account. Certainly the very worst of the senior commanders in the West. Failed at Caen, failed in M-G, but always blamed others.
I have to laugh at the comments here, Ike failed here. Monty didn't do this or Patton didn't do that. The blame is not what the Allied command did or failed to do. The blame lies in what the Germans did right. This time Adolf did not interfere. And General Biterrige, who commanded the SS panzer troops in Arnhem knew exactly what to do as he was aware that the bridges were the objectives of the whole attack.
The fact the radio's didn't work, due to using the wrong crystals, shows how poorly planned this whole operation was. Something as fundamental as communication was screwed up.
Montgomery should have known better than to let pride get in the way of his judgement. The decision to move forward with the northern push WITHOUT the full required support was a foolish mistake on his part. had he gained the support he requested I still believe the northern push would have been greatly successful.
The more I watch, and learn from this I develop the view that Montgomery's Push to the north would have crippled Hitlers army far earlier than Market Garden.
My father was a Sergeant in the 101st Airborne when I was born in the 50's. He went in too late to see combat but stayed in the Army. He made over 100 jumps but never saw combat. He's been gone for over 30 years now but I still see him as a hero. He was stationed in Germany when I was born in California.
Operation "Market Garden" was a case of the allies underestimating the power of the Wehrmacht. We thought they were finished, but boy were we wrong! Germans fought 'til the end...
its a german characteristic, its still like that today, i got into some fights with gemrnans when i was stationd in germany, and man, even when they are drunk they can take some serious hits, and give back some pretty good ones too, i respect the hell out of the germans.
From what I understand the American paratroopers completed their mission, but British paratroopers were held back by the cheery town folk and that got the British in a bad way that they where slaughtered :|
""From what I understand the American paratroopers completed their mission,""
Not quite true. The American 101st failed to capture the Son bridge and the bridge at Best. This put the advance back a day until the British built a Bailey Bridge. Of course, this is never mentioned.
Operation Market Garden is perhaps one of the most daring assaults ever made. Sometimes you do it sometimes you don't but heroes are always remembered.

Eisenhower screwed up in September and that also led to the Battle of the Bulge with the thin front across the Ardennes
Many thousands died for nothing - thanks Ike

In ww2, you didn`t need to open your parachute. Your parachute was opened by a rope and a parachute does not go slow. It goes as fast as that men.

I wonder if the relief force would have stopped 12 miles from Arnhem if Patton had been in charge?

Yes of course. Patton couldn't even take Metz for two months and there weren't even any SS Panzers or Tiger tanks defending Metz.
