@archebeats The company did but Tom Oberheim himself has started remaking these. A few years ago now, actually. The Son of 4 Voice will be available soon! Check his website.
@sweetbuttcheekbohunk Thanks! It is pretty amazing sounding. Every synth has it's own sound and this one is kind of like the perfect synth. Sorta like textbook-perfect. Different than moog or arp but very rich and full sounding. It's just something you need to have!
@DJPeteJames No, there are 2 MIDI control voltages. The first is for notes, the second is assignable. You can choose a source from Velocity, controller, or cv pressure and assign it to osc frequency, filter cutoff or the vca.
It doesn't sound like i'm looking for a virtual analog, or a digital synthesizer. I am not an idiot, and i know what i'm talking about. Analog or digital has got nothing to do with it. I have a poly evolver, which is analog - and you also have a moog slim phatty, which is 100% analog signal path. Yet both synths (as well as other modern analog synths) can recieve cc midi messages for almost every parameter and function on the synth. Gordon reid criticized the new SEM for lack of this
@zahush76 I think you need to do more research on this instrument first. It is a pure analog synth. The only thing digital is the midi interface, which is really separate from the rest of the synth. What you see is exactly what you get. There is nothing hidden. It sounds like you're looking for a virtual analog or probably just a digital synth with all those functions. Of course, if you use a midi-control voltage converter I'm sure you could do some of that using the patch points on the SEM.
Nice demo of the sem! Reminds at some times of John Carpenter's soundtrack ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. And I just checked the net, Carpenter used a Oberheim synth on that soundtrack!
Loved your vid post!!! Excellent job! Yes, the SEM is a jewel. Always found the true, (original) Obie sound to be more versitale and musical than Moog. Hope Tom gives us some more gems like this.
@4everColReb Thanks! Yeah, it sounds much better to me. He's already released the 4-voice, but I hope some day he'll so an expanded version (or expander) with a few LFOs, Envelopes and oscillators. Maybe a modular thing to interface with the SEM.
Heh, great guess! That's exactly what inspired it! DeYoung had a 4 voice then he expanded it to 8 for Pieces of Eight. Then after he programmed all the sounds, the programmer battery died and he had to create them all over. That pissed him off! Anyway, I always loved that sound,. It seems very vocal so I tried it on this song and got the same sound. I was trying to do a variety of sounds to show what it could do and hopefully the song is ok too.
Sounds great!! That LFO-filter-sweep sound around :28-:55 sounds a lot like a sound from Styx's "The Message" from the Pieces of Eight album. I think they used SEMs (a Four-Voice?) for that too.
I just ordered my SEM Pro. You've got me drooling as I wait arrival. I have a feeling it will be 90% of my sounds.

@swankrecords It's surprisingly versatile and oh-so-smooooth. I still use moog or arp or prophet for percussive bass sounds though.

@scott2eh Oh MAN! For real? You've never seen it? Here's the intro. Very memorable and awesome funky theme song...
YouTube: "Monkey Magic Intro"
Check out 0:45-ish for that sound you made!!
You're like a master idiot savante, magically making MOST of the sounds from the original Monkey Magic theme!
This is the proper recording...
YouTube: "GODIEGO - MONKEY MAGIC"
I LOVE the beat at 1:19. Ciao. Nice work!

How are you sequencing the SEM? Does it recieve midi commands from software, like cubase etc?
And can it be automated with software such as these?
Can you automate the filter or other categories, like you would on other synths?
How is the midi implementation, and how does it work?
I emailed Tom, and he replied by saying he doesn't know anything about cubase...

Sounds awesome!!!
thanks for the vid

@Geoff1967 Thanks! Sonar 7 for recording. All effects were default plugins in Sonar and Sound Forge. No syncing.
