I lived where much of this film was filmed. I searched for years for a video copy of it and finally found it about 1990. Then all of a sudden it's everywhere. I even had a band we managed play at the wickerman festival near Dundrennan recently.
A beautiful song, and a totally amazing, must see film! It (for me) is a "culture clash" kind of story, the "horror" is implied, not overt, also totally avoid the dreadful Nicholas Cage remake, that is a disgrace.
Oh how this moves me. The great tragedy about The Wicker Man soundtrack is that Paul Giovanni didn't live to see it celebrated in the way it is today. Although the film was on its way to cult status when he died in 1990, I think it took until the 21st Century for the music to be fully appreciated and accepted for what it is - a 20th Century folk masterpiece.
Mr Giovanni take a celestial bow, you are not forgotten...
Why all the remake-bashing? I think the decision to make it a comedy, while strange, worked very well. It may not be one of the best films ever made, while the original definitely is, but the remake is still a great watch just for being so hilarious.
Hang on a minute... you say it wasn't supposed to be a comedy? But the bear suit... Okay, I take it back, the remake is a terrible film!
@Nagneto That was a remake? The Nicholas Cage thing? I thought it was just an extended comedy sketch for a saturday night live sketch or some shit. hehe
This song is amazing but it is even better in context of the film opening, in the background as the seaplane is flying over the island and we get a little montage of what Summerisle looks like. Fantastic scene.
@Mamechiho It's very confused and muddled, but in a way interesting to see the story play out in a remote Washington (?) setting. The plot is lost, however. They try to make it a matriarchy/bee worship/vaguely Celtic sort of thing. A mess.
The original 1973 version had all the suspense. Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee were amazing .The acting was incredible. The best retro film I've seen ever.
i did, unfortunately! it was just the worst godamn peice of shit remake ever of a horror movie classic! EPIC FAIL! trust me, KEEP away & stick with the original! :P
Political "correctness" is another form of behavioral and thought control and when religions practice the same, fall into the same category. It is also the same with the "political right". It appears as though every society has its method to control the masses either with a partly line or religious attempts to manpulate the masses with guilt, fear, intimidation and sedation. When the country falls prey to the will and whim of such thought and behavioral control, the people are screwed.
The words are from a Robert Burns ballad called Rigs o' Barley. The 'Annie' mentioned really existed. Hauntingly beautiful. I could listen to this and JT's 'Witches Promise' all day!
Favorite film ever. Paul Giovanni shall live forever. Is it true the musical he wrote "Shot Through the Heart" was never staged? I wonder who owns the rights. Would love to hear the music and read the words.
Im american and just saw this movie for the first time. The music has blown my mind. Starting with Corn Rigs which is my favorite, but I have never seen a soundtrack contribute more to a film than here. This is an instant classic and one of my favorite movies of all time, and corn rigs is amazing. I want to know more about the lyrics and their meaning. Like what is a lammas night? Corn rigs and barley rigs? And what does it mean to be bonnie? Dont know but it must be cool.
Gotta say, I love this film, mostly because it reminds me of growing up on a farm, in the Lincolnshire wolds, in the 1970's....though I don't remember sacrificing any policemen.....
Lammas is also a festival in some parts of Scotland, to do witht he harvest and general fertility of the crops. There are fairs in some towns for lammas
There is an 'uncut' version with another song on, deleted for the US theatres. It is available on DVD in the UK. Paul Giovanni incidently appears several times in the film.
Did you see the 'short' version-it stars off with the music straight away,or the long version-on the long version its 10 minutes before the music and titles start,it is the REAL version, the short version is the 'cut to ribbons' version done to save production costs. The long version is how it should of been,it has about 30mins more footage although in parts its grainey as it was only discoverd a few years ago!!! You can get it on DVD.
'Corn Rigs' is a reference to the traditional Northern Celtic farming practice of 'Run Rig', characterised by a pattern of ridges (Sc. dial. 'rigs') and furrows. 'Bonny' means pretty or attractive.
It was upon a Lammas night When corn rigs are bonnie Beneath the moon's unclouded light I held awhile to Annie The time went by with careless heed 'Till 'tween the late and early With small persuasion she agreed To see me through the barley Corn rigs and barley rigs and Corn rigs are bonnie I'll not forget that happy night Among the rigs with Annie love it...

The sky was blue, the wind was still
The moon was shining clearly
I set her down with right goodwill
Among the rigs o' barley
I kent her heart was my own
I loved her most sincerely
I kissed her o'er and e'er again
Among the rigs of barley
