Technically a basketball game could last that long since they can't tie but it is highly unlikely. Also football can last 4hrs + even if it is a regular season game. If it is a playoff game I think I've heard of one going half way through a 2nd ot.
i am from long island. i left to go to bay ridge brooklyn at the end of the 10th inning. we drove all the way to the verizano bridge and back and the game was still on with the score still 0-0. now that is crazy.
You could've also blamed Tony LaRussa for that. He decided to have his relief pitchers bat with two outs with the bases loaded in extra innings instead of letting his only bench player left pinch hit.
Stephi-I was at that game and I just called it unlimited baseball. It was disappointing when pujols was up to bat with the bases loaded and struck out. But hey, you don't get to see one off those everyday!
If you knew the history about baseball you would know that they used to play to 21 runs to win the game.. Now tell me would you have wanted to watch two pitchers try to outdual each other and wait about 40 innings for them to score 5-10 runs... No so they changed it to the more runs at the end of nine innings wins. So your lucky they don't still have it the way they used to... Quit complaining!
However boring baseball is I'll take it any day over Cricket here in the UK. These guys play games over 5 days and still usually tie the games. Its soooo boring!!!
It wouldve been fun if the game was 20 to 19 with 10 or 12 hrs. 20 innings for 3 runs thats like a basketball game going into 4 ot and the score just 90 to 95.
I'm from Europe, and here nothing compares to your games. I love american sports, but most of the time i can't watch them because of the schedule (here tere are 5 hours! later) and because of the during time...
Sometimes even 3 hours of Football is too much!
There is something to think about.... WE also wanna watch ur games here!
its gonna hard to speed up the game.... they can minimize the nonsense at the plate and on the mound by making them pitch sooner, and step in the box sooner
you didnt point out that felipe lopez the third baseman pitched nd some other guy i think he was a right feilder..motte or something like that..manager of the cardinals tony larussa seemed hardheaded nd didnt wanna bring out a real pitcher. the mets desperatly needed the win so they brung out pelfrey
I rarely sit down and solely watch a baseball game...I usually have it on but its on the background...I might be on the internet or doing some work or something...unless its a playoff game I can't sit there and literally do nothing but watch a game
Pace of the game and length of the game are two different topics. With the game between the Mets and the Cards, the topic is not necessarily the pace, which flowed very nice and "quick", but the fact that neither team could score a victory in regulation, 10 innings, etc. In the Japanese Professional Baseball League, they do not play after 12 innings, which could be an option for MLB and the minors to consider. For the pace of the game it requires different investigation and solutions.
Baseball is more relaxing, and still interesting. I say it is good how it is! I still find football the most interesting/fun to watch. By the third hour of the game, I would have just quit and played Call of Duty. Then I would Google the end results later!
Why would MLB ever make baseball shorter. That would mean fewer commercials and thus less $. Anyway, baseball is fine the way its is (sans the steroids).
Well, that last Mets/Cards game is not a common baseball game. Most people that love baseball love these types of games. It has a good aftertaste when it's over. Even though it was almost 7 hours long, you saw things that you would never see in an everyday baseball game like seeing Lohse play LF and seeing everyday players pitch. It was exciting in it's own way. I don't think they should try to speed up the game. That is just stupid in my opinion. Instead they should widen the strike zone.
Baseball shouldn't try and change a thing. Those fans that stayed got their money's worth and can say they were at that game. I promise they will never forget it and thats what baseball is about. Great games like this.
i love baseball, and ill admit it does lag on sometimes, but i must admit it is my favorite sport. As long as the viewers stay healthy, and teams sell 2/3 of their tickets, CHANGE NOTHING, besides only a few people complain, when i was in HS, everyone loved baseball so it seems fine too me
Chess is a thinking man's game too and its boring as hell to watch. Example: like the golf commentators, they whisper what chess players are doing..."I think he'd do a PK4 there, or maybe use the horse/knight to double check him or maybe sacrifice his rook to gain control of the center...." They also have timed chess games!!! ya know what, they should implement that on baseball! actually i want a 1 strike 1 swing your out game! swing and a miss, effyou youre out!!!. And on that note, I am out!!!
when i go to a game i pray that it doesnt go into extra innings. i drive 3.5 hrs to see my fav team play so thats already 7 hours of my day and another 4 hrs for the game. watchin on tv or listening on the radio is a diff story i love the extra inning games.
I love baseball & I think it's cool that it can last that long...I wouldn't want play in a game like that, but I still think that the possibility is interesting!
thats why I only watch 7-9th, its way too long, and they recap all the good stuff, so you don't to sit thru it, I never feel bored watching bball or football
the only sport that i love when its overtime and never want it to end is football thats the best sport iam a diehard yankee fan but i just watch yankee games baseball is borin and all the pitchers and stuff 7 hours of baseball is toucure even if that of your team
That was a marathon and a half! As I tweeted, the Mets and Cardinals are the luckiest guys in America that they're not playing at 1:05 Midwest time today. They're on ESPN tonight.
JR, that's what I think the whole beauty of baseball is: no one knows when the game is gonna end. It could last 2 hours... or it could last 7. No one knows. It's supposedly America's game... America's past time. Most people outside the US don't know the rules... or the point of watching it. However, I think it's kinda like cricket or golf: you REALLY enjoy it if you picture yourself playing in the game.
I don't think baseball can gain many viewers by shortening the game. A lot of the population has already made up their mind about baseball. By shortening the game it could possibly scare away some of their older viewers.
I think that now with new media viewers can get their baseball fix with out watching the whole game, don't change the game just change how people can get the info about it/ view it.
There's no way to speed it up IMO. the games does take long but so what. then if MLB some how makes the game faster than people will complain it goes too fast!
@SuperBran12 I have an idea: after each pitch, the pitcher only has fifteen seconds to throw the next one, otherwise it is a balk and a walk. After each pitch, the batter is only allowed to do one warmup swing; if he does more, then it is an automatic strikeout. The same applies if he calls time just to talk to himself. Why not? You notice how the home crowd boos when the opposing team calls time; it is ridiculous and unnecessary of the batter.
and tell if your ready for 5 to 10 pitches at bat and not call time. Fans boo??? that what there do. nothing will stop them from booing. only 15 seconds? the pitcher will have no time to pick a kind of pitch he wants. curve, fast, etc. leave baseball as it is and if u think it's boring, don't watch it!!!!!
When a hitter steps up to the plate, he should not be allowed to take more than one warmup swing before the pitcher throws the ball to him. No timeouts should be called by the hitter, either. If the hitters calls time just to talk to himself, it should be an automatic strikeout. If the pitcher takes more than ten seconds to pitch the ball after the batter is ready, it should be an automatic walk and a balk.
Cricket lasts days
NROBable 2 weeks ago
Soccer = 90 minutes + 30 minutes extra time + penalties (5 each then sudden death)
I think it should be for Baseball - 9 innings + 3 innings extra + penalty pitches (5 each)
A "penalty pitch" is when the pitcher MUST throw over the plate.
So, if the batter leaves it and it's outside the plate, the batter scores for his team. But the batter also scores just by hitting the ball.
