il Duca's BEST aria in the opera after "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"
and I'm sorry, antonellocito, but NO ONE ever sang this part better than Maestro Pavarotti. NO ONE!!! same with Canio in Pagliacci and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. his voice is unique among ALL Italian opera tenors.
@LeRinkRat Billy Mays was a god of pitchman sales and I'm using him as metaphor of how good Pavarotti is at his own talent you thick headed pompous prick
@Techgamehut YES it's available on DVD @ Amazon. google "Jean-Pierre Ponnelle classic film of Rigoletto"
it's a 1981 performance with Riccardo Chailly conducting Pavarotti (obviously) as il Duca, Ingvar Wixell as Rigoletto (he also sings the part of Monterone), Edita Gruberova as his daughter Gilda, Fedora Barbieri as Gilda's companion Giovanna, Ferruccio Furlanetto as Sparsfucile and Victoria Vergara as Sparsfucile's sister Maddalena.
Up to the late '70's, the cabaletta was often cut. I have an in-house of Pav with Joan doing this in 1972 at the Met. Just when you think the cabaletta should start, it cuts to Rigoletto coming in. On this, it seems like they spliced the high D in, at least to me. His first recording of Rig is my favorite, followed by the Moffo-Merrill-Kraus recording. The Bastianini-Scotto recording is also good. But Pav is the duke for me! Superb voice!
Really, it's not very noticable due to his weight problems later on (he's overweight here but it's more a robust thing I think) but when you look at him he has kind of a subtle masculine beauty
@harald144 There's no separate way of writing music, it's all standard. So stop trying to prove that you are superior, Americans are usually polite enough to mot imply bad things about Europeans but you guys always want to turn it into a dick-waving contest and I'm sick of it. If you are all so cultures then why don't you show tolerance?
In the score, the last note is written as a D4 - approached by the A4 (dominant - tonic) but here, instead of going down to the lower D, he instead goes up to the D5 to finish off epically ... most definitely head voice, not falsetto!
This guy, Ducca really had me fooled. I thought he was going to be faithful to Gilda. He even later has the nerve to state, La Donna e mobile later on. What a fraud! ...or is the Duke just a typical man?
@Pavarotti48 For gods sake, get some education into your head! This is not supposed to sound detractive, but really, reading the damn libretto or even better directly "Le roi s'amuse" by Hugo.
I don't think that he is a good actor, even after watching this video. Understand me correctly; I love Pavarotti as a singer, but this isn't the best place to judge his acting. If my understanding is correct, the vocal tracks and the actual acting are done completely separately in this production. Furthermore, he looks far too intense for my taste. As they say, de gustibus non est disputandum, but that is my take on it.
This is one of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's best opera films. And, this is certainly Luciano's best theatrical performance (if not the only instance where he can really be said to act well)....ma, per me, il tempio e troppo lento :/
Why this number is often cut boggles my mind. It'd be one thing if Rigoletto was already pushing 3 and a half hours or something, but it's only a two-hour show. Why cut something as great as this?
i like this very much but i think alfredo kraus's singing of this piece is superior. especially the d at the end. he did not hold it as long as pavarotti but the overall quality of the tone i feel is better. they are both fantastic.
No he hit that note with head voice, or "falsettone" - it's the same - that is falcetto voice "pushed" in a very hard way with head muscles to make it gain volume. the yield of this thecnique is very limited nevertheless, if not developped with particular care (as other tenors do, as William Matteuzzi for instance), and that's why Pavarotti used this only in recording, when using a microphone - in a live version this acuto wouldn't be so powerfull.

Cure-Redneck? LoL...Those who accuse me with being racist are the real racists as they're likes are based on xenophobia. Domingo and Villazon's vast majority of admirers are hispanics and latinos, who admire them just because they happen to be one of them. They're no different then hooligans. They are like a virus in this regard. I have nothing against Spanish people. I have something against those who debase opera. A fiddlestick like yourself should think twice before uttering nonsense.

Ah! sappia alfin chi l'ama, conosca alfin chi sono, apprenda ch'anco in trono ha degli schiavi Amor. Apprenda ch'anco in trono, ch'anco in trono ha degli schiavi ha degli schiavi Amor.
narcissusgray: I agree totally - it's a fantastic piece of music that I'd never heard of until buying this Rigoletto video. I enjoy Verdi's operas so much and Pavarotti is wonderful, of course, but it'd be great if tenors sang lesser known arias when performing in concerts sometimes so that most people would become as familiar with them as they are with La Donna e Mobile. Can't be done where there's a chorus sometimes, but there are lovely solo arias that we rarely hear sung - a pity!

il possente amor piu' bello che abbia mai sentito: legato formidabile, fraseggio idem, il do diesis finale tenuto è mostroso.mi colpisce sempre di piu' la solidissima tecnica di quest'uomo considerato un Dio dell'opera e non solo.
