  • il Duca's BEST aria in the opera after "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"

and I'm sorry, antonellocito, but NO ONE ever sang this part better than Maestro Pavarotti. NO ONE!!! same with Canio in Pagliacci and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. his voice is unique among ALL Italian opera tenors.

  • I think it's a Eb5, I played on my piano.

  • great pavarotti in this role...one of the best, but kraus is even better

  • 5:03 fucking damn voice man!!!!!

  • AT 3:18 THE OTHERS ARE LOOKING AT PAV ,AND THINKING GODDAMN HE IS SO GOOD

  • High D?? =D!!

  • Pavarottii's like the Billy Mays of tenors

  • @Sheenious bist du verruckt? Billy Mays was a load mouthed sceaming lout. Luciano Pavarotti was the GREATEST Italian opera tenor EVER

  • 50% of this play's badassery comes from Pavarotti

  • so is this a movie? what is the name of it? Thanks!

  • @Techgamehut YES it's available on DVD @ Amazon. google "Jean-Pierre Ponnelle classic film of Rigoletto"

it's a 1981 performance with Riccardo Chailly conducting Pavarotti (obviously) as il Duca, Ingvar Wixell as Rigoletto (he also sings the part of Monterone), Edita Gruberova as his daughter Gilda, Fedora Barbieri as Gilda's companion Giovanna, Ferruccio Furlanetto as Sparsfucile and Victoria Vergara as Sparsfucile's sister Maddalena.

  • i kind of like opera music.....(while i drve my ferrari 599 gto)lol..it makes it seem like im an old rich dude stacked w/money...hahahaa..

  • Up to the late '70's, the cabaletta was often cut. I have an in-house of Pav with Joan doing this in 1972 at the Met. Just when you think the cabaletta should start, it cuts to Rigoletto coming in. On this, it seems like they spliced the high D in, at least to me. His first recording of Rig is my favorite, followed by the Moffo-Merrill-Kraus recording. The Bastianini-Scotto recording is also good. But Pav is the duke for me! Superb voice!

  • Really, it's not very noticable due to his weight problems later on (he's overweight here but it's more a robust thing I think) but when you look at him he has kind of a subtle masculine beauty

  • he looked so young

  • MERAVIGLIA!!!-

  • D5 ? thats what you call it in america ? its d2 in europe

  • @harald144 There's no separate way of writing music, it's all standard. So stop trying to prove that you are superior, Americans are usually polite enough to mot imply bad things about Europeans but you guys always want to turn it into a dick-waving contest and I'm sick of it. If you are all so cultures then why don't you show tolerance?

  • @15Billman *cultured, sorry typo

  • does any one know what note he hits at the end?

  • @RubenJ37 It's a High D

  • @RubenJ37 It's a high D

  • BEARDS ALL AROUND

  • I love his laugh. I had never heard him laugh before.

  • Un Re sobreagudo impostado impecable!!!!!! único maestro!

  • Pavarotti did not die. The Gods merely desired a fancy new morning alarm. And took him back.

  • Favarotti here is so young and healthy. Only he did know to guard his health. Too much pasta and wine, could be the very reason for overweight...

    Luciano Pavarotti, R.I.P.

His Golden Voice will never die.

  • the others are looking on in disbelief toward the end. "damn, he IS good!"

  • THIS IS THE REAL OPERA SINGER.!!!!!

  • My goodness even his laugh is musical...

  • é possente amore

  • This is how I get down too, before I go to bed!

  • 14 people have helped in the hostage taking of their own wife :D

  • NOW THIS IS THE REAL SINGING OF OPERA.

  • Rest in peace Luciano Pavarotti thank you for graceing those of use with fine enough tastes to appreciate youre talent; sleep well mistro.

  • Never again will there be an opera this good, I never tire of watching this!

  • Besides a great singer, a great actor.

  • bravo maestro

  • STUPENDO

  • In the score, the last note is written as a D4 - approached by the A4 (dominant - tonic) but here, instead of going down to the lower D, he instead goes up to the D5 to finish off epically ... most definitely head voice, not falsetto!

  • @rossyxan Yes, this is called a "puntatura" and I think this is actually one of the few Verdian "cabaletta"s in which it makes sense musically.

  • voce infinita

  • bravo, bravo

  • canta,,canta,,fraghu e binu

  • Rip Pavarotti and your son, billy mays

and also explain rigoletto to me, like how did gilda die and wtf was there with the red head and all, idk, just explain

  • Comment removed

  • the high c at the was beyond epic

at least im sure it was a high c, correct me if im wrong

  • @generosos87 High D (D5)

  • @rossyxan ahh so higher than i previously thought, lol, thanks!

  • CERTANLY, Pavarotti ,as always, one of the best.

    Ciertamente, te encontramos a faltar.

  • "possente amor" is corect ;)

  • I can see now where billy mays got his inspiration to yell in his commericals

  • Pavarotti is fantastic here. I think this was one of his best perorformances.

  • This guy, Ducca really had me fooled. I thought he was going to be faithful to Gilda. He even later has the nerve to state, La Donna e mobile later on. What a fraud! ...or is the Duke just a typical man?

    Pavarotti as always is sensational!

  • @Pavarotti48 For gods sake, get some education into your head! This is not supposed to sound detractive, but really, reading the damn libretto or even better directly "Le roi s'amuse" by Hugo.

  • @Stalin111 What on earth are you going on about???? I am completly baffled by your comments.

  • Best Classical Music youtube.com/watch?v=2i3Ua1gQLmQ

  • this proves how range isn't the most important thing.

  • Lol @:23, the midget hiding behind the chair

  • Q.E.P.D LUCIANO POR SIEMPRE EN LA MENTE TODOS

  • wiii me gusta eso jackie!! ;)

  • beautiful singing by the greatest tenor ever.

  • I bet there isn't anyone after watching this that says Pavarotti is a bad actor...!

    RIP MAESTRO !!!

  • I don't think that he is a good actor, even after watching this video. Understand me correctly; I love Pavarotti as a singer, but this isn't the best place to judge his acting. If my understanding is correct, the vocal tracks and the actual acting are done completely separately in this production. Furthermore, he looks far too intense for my taste. As they say, de gustibus non est disputandum, but that is my take on it.

  • poSSente

  • amazing,,,

    labeed abdal

    kuwait

  • Addio maestro... ci manchi ancora RIP

  • This is one of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's best opera films. And, this is certainly Luciano's best theatrical performance (if not the only instance where he can really be said to act well)....ma, per me, il tempio e troppo lento :/

  • epic and awsome

  • His eyes at 2.31 are amazing. An truly brilliant man. RIP. X

  • @PianistRonaldChow haha! Really great? FREAKING MIND BLOWINGLY AWESOME HIGH D!

  • That last note must be a high D or E natural, he makes it look so easy.

  • POSSENTE AMOR MI CHIAMA

  • Excuse me but the title is wrong. It's "Possente amor"

  • it's the same thing?

  • No, "posente" doesn't exist as an italian word.

  • That last note is incredible

  • THE BEST DUCA IN THE WHOLE WORLD

  • Together with A. Kraus and F. Bonisolli.

  • oh ok, I´ll check it out.

  • Whats the name of that song in the gamefly commercial? send me a message if you know it

  • recitar from vesti la giubba

  • Why this number is often cut boggles my mind. It'd be one thing if Rigoletto was already pushing 3 and a half hours or something, but it's only a two-hour show. Why cut something as great as this?

  • haha :22 is amazing

  • Pavarotti laughs like a little boy. :)

His rendition of the duke is the best.

  • wait, i meant to thumbs up.

    FOR SURE

    HE IS AMAZING

  • Hell yes. :-P

  • sometimes he looks like he doesn't know what's going on lol

  • that's the point! x

    porfaa..!!!!!!!

    slaudos desde mexico!!!

  • Voy para alla. saludos, luego te comento.

  • Gracias por compartirlo. Esta hermoso.

  • fantastic

  • i like this very much but i think alfredo kraus's singing of this piece is superior. especially the d at the end. he did not hold it as long as pavarotti but the overall quality of the tone i feel is better. they are both fantastic.

  • Is that a full voiced high E at the end!? i miss Pavarotti...

  • It's a full voice D5 which he only used in recording. It's a very fine D5 indeed.

  • No he hit that note with head voice, or "falsettone" - it's the same - that is falcetto voice "pushed" in a very hard way with head muscles to make it gain volume. the yield of this thecnique is very limited nevertheless, if not developped with particular care (as other tenors do, as William Matteuzzi for instance), and that's why Pavarotti used this only in recording, when using a microphone - in a live version this acuto wouldn't be so powerfull.

We all miss him anyway - Big Luciano forever!!

  • I did wonder why it was missing from stage productions.

But you get used to hearing it, from the recording, and it makes the live versions then seem that wee bit flat without it.

Like having no wine with dinner.

  • i love the laughing from 0:58 on lol!

  • split this off from 2:30 on

  • the title is wrong: the correct version is "POSSENTE amore".

  • Exa-Whomever brought you to this world should have never been encouraged to procreate as the end result is a buffoon who makes nonsensical comments.

  • Exa-You're not worth more. I've already been generous.

  • Your one to talk, you spew more crap on this site than anybody, with your racist remarks, I can tell you are a rednek w/ no class whatsoever, In my 36 years of life I've never heard anyone breed more hate, What you got against Spanish people? Jealous you can't sing in front of public? You should be denounced for your stupidity! You make me sick! Poor fool!

  • Cure-Redneck? LoL...Those who accuse me with being racist are the real racists as they're likes are based on xenophobia. Domingo and Villazon's vast majority of admirers are hispanics and latinos, who admire them just because they happen to be one of them. They're no different then hooligans. They are like a virus in this regard. I have nothing against Spanish people. I have something against those who debase opera. A fiddlestick like yourself should think twice before uttering nonsense.

  • Look gentlemen, there is no reason to argue. The reason we are in this link is to listen to pavoratti, who happens to be great in almost everything. If you don't like pavoratti, then obviously you are a sadist who enjoys causing trouble. Comments should be that of educated profesional critisism(bieng pavoratti, thats unlikely) or comments of praise. Since calling someone a racist/saying racist remarks aren't either why don't you two PM your childish argument and stop spamming the comments.

  • Bravissimo, Luciano!

  • Virtuosity beyond my comprehension!! Without a doubt, the greatest voice I've had the previlidge to hear.

Luciano, the world will never be the same without you!!!

  • Spectacular Spider-man rules due to this opera. I love this song and the gang war.

  • Awesome!!!!

  • 0:22

    cute fellah haha

  • This was Great, I liked it

  • I just realized: Pav has awesome teeth. I want teeth like that.

    See 2:12

  • And the way he rolls the 'r' sound is just hilarious.

    Pav=awesomeness

  • he was the greatest tenor.

  • Yes, it's a falsetto, but is well managed.

  • The high D was NOT falsetto

  • iiAFX is correct. The high D is NOT falsetto.

  • That is a full voice top D.

  • Is D6 one of the harmonics on that last high d?

  • yes, it's its first harmonic

  • bravooo maestro !!!

  • narcissusgray: I agree totally - it's a fantastic piece of music that I'd never heard of until buying this Rigoletto video. I enjoy Verdi's operas so much and Pavarotti is wonderful, of course, but it'd be great if tenors sang lesser known arias when performing in concerts sometimes so that most people would become as familiar with them as they are with La Donna e Mobile. Can't be done where there's a chorus sometimes, but there are lovely solo arias that we rarely hear sung - a pity!

  • Listening to this from speakers like dog food cans is a bit of a tragedy. Still, LOUD is good, and will do for now.

If only I could sing like that ...what else would matter?

  • Pavarotti had no need to have the acting abilities of Laurence Olivier. Watch the expressions on his face, most of which would have been lost to a theatre audience but can be appreciated on a DVD, and listen to the humour, passion, etc he poured forth from that glorious voice. Actual acting ability is secondary to all that as I see it but other opinions may differ. It all came from the heart and, for me, that's more than enough.

  • the most hilarious is the pavarotti's laughs at 1:03 and 3:27 . That's so funny... "haaaahahahahahahaha"

  • His face at 1:22 is priceless :D

  • So true! He looks like he's considering a quadratic equation!!!

  • LOL

  • They are fantastic!!! Do you think it's really him?

  • Yes it is him...

  • My Goodness Did He really reach that top 'D' ..... I Can't believe my Ears.. WoW what a tenor

  • If that last bit was indeed Pav then I am truly in awe.

  • Yes I know, I had to listen to it 3 times to make sure I was listening correctly it is him.

  • he sounds like hes been turned into a chipmunk o.O

  • It is him and NOT falsetto either.
