For years I did not have much of an interest in hand knitting, but after looking at your video, I am hooked. I am going to try to knit a pair of socks. I learned how to crochet socks but now I can try hand knitting a pair. You are a great teacher and down to earth so to be plain and understood by novice. No wonder you are a teacher. Thanks so much
This is a great video, just watched it once and got the hang of it first time! I only have one little (but very annoying) problem: I get a ladder where the stitches go from one needle to the other. I try pulling tight, but still get the ladders...
this is so helpful. I'm trying a new pattern and it calls for knitting on two circulars and I had no idea where to even start. The instructions in the book were kind of vague so it was kind of confusing. (plus I learn from watching not reading) I'm glad you put this on here. Its informative and incredibly helpful
Joining with the extra loop is brilliant! So logical and almost "obvious" when you think about it, but how many people struggle to avoid that extra drawn-out piece on the first row...I always did! I suppose it would work just as well with DPNs or Magic Loop...Thanks again!
I have a pattern that calls for knitting two socks at once. I had it on the needles and took it off time passed and I have forgot how to set it up again. Please do a video. I have your books - great!
I have a pattern that calls for knitting two socks at once. I had it on the needles and took it off time passed and I have forgot how to set it up again. Please do a video. I have you books - great!
I Want to make 2 socks at the same time. It has been years since i tried this, I have to identical circular needles. please do a video that shows how to start this project. I am using the cuff down for this pair, since I have more experience with it. My worst problems with socks is i rarely make a second one . I have about 10 socks without a mate sincerely. smittee
Thank you for this video. I have restarted the same mittens like 40 times because I kept having major gaps between my stitches at my turning points. I am still only using one set of circular needles, but your video helped explain some things to me that I was missing in other videos.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm trying to make the swirl shawl that is made up of hexagons in the round and my first try using dpns almost made me give up. I think this method will have me finishing up the project in no time.
that's udderly groan-worthy! thank you for the video; that was an excellent explanation. i have bad memories of DPNs from my childhood (much better ones of milking cows and goats, albeit not whales), and this looks like a fabulous way to continue avoiding that mess o'needles while still being able to knit socks. so, now to figure out how i get two socks at once going; that should be eminently possible.
Thank you - this was a great video! I'm an experienced crocheter and have recently successfully made my first knitted sweater, but I have never worked with dpns or 2 circulars for in-the-round knitting. I just found a pattern for a beautiful pair of mittens I'd like to try and your video is extremely clear and helpful.
OMG Thank you so much it all made sense even though here in Australia I have personally never milked a cow or goat but the analagy helped me heaps, I have now found something that I enjoy and am good at after years of trying everything...Thank you again
I'm still a little confused about when you put the knitting down, how do you know where you are? Is the needle with the working yarn always the left hand needle?
The needle with the working yarn is always the right hand needle - just as it is in any knitting. When you finish with one needle, it gives its yarn to the next needle while the finished needle takes a rest.
HELP! I'm knitting a raglan card fr the top dn, completed a row, laid it down for a few days now don't know which side to start knitting on again. As it is a card it's knit back & forth & I'm confused as how to tell which side I ended with. I could just start but I hate to unknit! that's what I'd be doing because I'm still increasing stitches on each side of the mkrs for the sleeves. Couldn't find answr to solve problem. I'm new to knitting. Would some1 please explain what to do?
The yarn will always travel to the left, the opposite of reading direction. So look to see where the yarn is comign from - that is the right hand needle. Use it to knit loops from the left hand needle.
@gabrieltheking2203...yo hablo español...sera que te puedo ayudar en algo?? Si tienes una pregunta para la señora yo podre preguntarle a ella por ti???
Thanks a million for your wonderful videos! I'm in the process of watching them all, even the ones on topics I'm already familiar with because you're just so darn entertaining and informative!
Oh I think I understand now, because to knit socks the only alternative to a pair of circs would be a set of DPNs because of the small diameter of socks, which wouldn't fit on just one circ.
This method could also work for hats then. I've been knitting hats lately and changed to DPNs from circ when the decreases made the diameter too small for the circ. Got it!
Hi Cat, I'm just starting to learn how to knit socks and wish you woule have explained the advantage of your method right at the beginning, and also shown how the work looks with a few inches of knitting on them. Is it the way to knit two socks at once by the wa&y? This actually what I'm looking for as I think it's a great idea.
PS: in weaving, the non-working needle would be called 'idle'.
thanks so much for explaining this method .. i have troubles with dbn knitting as they keep slipping out and i have to start all over again. with this method is it always good to cast on an extra stitch to join the round? as i saw you started with 25 and just kept working with 24 sts. so it is best to just cast on one extra st to join? also would this work when making gloves with finger holes too?
Hi Cat, My sister and I just love your video. It was so funny -- she couldn't sleep one night, got up at 3 a.m. , watched your video and learned how to do it! She has inspired me! It is definitely so much easier and more fun than dpns anyday! Thank you!
It skipped the part where you moved half of the cast on stitches to the second needle. Did you just slip the stitches over knitwise? Or had you cast on to both needles (it only appeared t be one)? Or was there some special Bordhi technique here too!?!
Thank you so much for such an enjoyable, educational, and memorable video.
You slip half the sts to the other needle purlwise - just put the tips together and slide them across as if they are moving across a clothesline. If you slipped them knitwise the mount would change, and you want it to stay the same. Glad you are enjoying learning this method!
Just wanted to say that I really enjoy this method. it's so much easier than DPN's for me and the circulars don't pull out as easily when my little ones get a hold of them.
Cat. The lady from a knitting store suggested that I could do your patterns on one circular needles. She said to just use markers to divide my instep and sole stitches. It's much cheaper than buying two sets of needles. How do you feel about this? Jan
Hi Jan- Many people enjoy working on 1 long circular needle and I hope you will try all methods and choose what suits you best. I personally love working on 2 circs, and think it moves along the fastest, but you need to find out for yourself!
When got to the part where I have to move the 5 wing stitches to the needle. I really got mixed up.The saleslady said to save money I should buy just one of each size and to learn the Magic Loop.I did but am not happy with the outcome. I guess I can put the five sts. before A.

Thankyou so much for your wonderful videos. I am working on Little Sky Sock.
I can't believe it but I did the first sock. I thought that I would just sail through the next one. I have had the worst time doing my cast on and joining the second end.
I have watched and reviewed your video over and over. So, off I go even though my husband is saying give it a rest. I CAN'T!!!
Thankyou, it's so much fun and I will get it.
A Happy Knitter almost of two circular needles. Jan
It's almost two in the morning here in wet coastal Northern California and I think that I am going to have to get up and try this right now! I am seldom so enthused by these videos, but your method makes so much sense; I'm champing at the bit!
OK, ok, I am going to stay in bed... but it's going to be hard. I am a self-taught beginning knitter, and have learnt a lot, but not tube knitting.
Wow, that was truly sensational. I really liked your "udder needle" and resting/napping lessons as well. Well done! I was so confused on how to knit with two circular needles before I found this vid!
Thanks. We have yellow(Y) stitches as the beginning of cast-on, next comes lime(L), blue(B), purple(P), and dark pink(R) as the end of cast-on. After slipping the extra yellow stitch over to other needle, you knit those stitches in the direction of stitches in color of RPBLY. Will it be OK if: with 13 stitches on needle that consists of end of cast-on, slip extra Red stitch over to the other needle. Then knit in the direction of stitches in the color of YLBPR?
At 2:00, you slip the start of the cast-on (white)stitch over to the end of the cast-on (purple/red). And you knit (?backward); from the end toward the start of the cast-on.
If i were to knit in 1 circular, i thought i could start knitting in the round; continuing in the same direction as the casting-on. What is the difference?
I have one pair of US 6 circ needles and one pair of US7 circ needles. Would it be very bad to use them both with this technique? Or are they close enough and will it all even out "in the wash"?
Use the smaller needle on the sole and the larger on the top of the foot - then the sole will be slightly denser fabric which will also wear better. So yes, you can use this combination.
Thank you for posting this video!!! I cast on some stitches and followed along after watching this once and I think I'll start using my double-pointed needles to hold up the flowers in my garden this spring.
