They and Portugal had the largest trading empires but I don't really know why they were a major nation over some other candidates .. Their empire wasn't very strong culturally and left no legacy whatsoever. I like them and all but there were better options..
No cultural legacy? Never heard of Rembrandt, Vermeer and all the other Dutch painters? Never seen the canals and houses in all Dutch cities? No, legacy? Glorious revolution and Englands rise to power. The Dutch East India Company, the first joint stock company and the invention of capitalism. Scientific progress and inventions like the microscope? Read a book.
@Ardunafeth Every nation has a first for everything, especially the other major nations during the AoD. What I meant was, for example, there are millions of Spanish speakers today and Spanish culture and traditions are evident in its ex-colonies. Everybody knows Spain had a big empire because of this but the same can't be said for the Dutch - not that they didn't have a great empire, just their customs weren't stained in the societies of ex-colonies like France, Portugal, etc. had done.
@SwooshParker The adoption of foreign languages and culture is mostly an American phenomenon because these regions were repopulated, mostly the result of dissease. Still, people speak Dutch in Surinam, the Dutch Antills and many people in SA speak Afrikaans, which is basically a form of Dutch and they still have Dutch traditions. Also in a country like Indonesia, a lot of the infrastructure is from the colonial period. If it wasnt for the Dutch there would still be 100 countries instead of 1
@SwooshParker and still...the dutch empire is named in the 7th greatest empires the world has ever seen...ranking higher then france and portugal...if the dutch didnt sell/traded their usa parts to the english..usa would speak dutch...same with brazil,we kicked the portoguese out and traded it back...dutch where moneymakers.
1. the dutch invaded Great Britain and succeeded to overtrow their king and replaced it with one of their own.
2. the dutch had the largest and strongest naval force of that time.
3. the dutch had colonies in almost every continent; for example in the US cities like Harlem and Brooklyn were named after dutch cities (Haarlem and Breukelen).
4. We fought against the spanish armada for our independence and won
and so on. Can you still say there were better options? I doubt that!

Windows Moviemaker doesn't allow me to save it in widescreen.
You can use VLC Mediaplayer for playback and set aspect ratio to 16:9.
