I've never seen this film but I'd really like to. Paul Simon is playing at the Glastonbury festival next week... can't believe I'm going to see him live!
This films takes the pith out of the music BUSINESS and the characters that run it which is probably why same corporate clones didn't want it promoted and don't help distribute it eg DVD release.
Paul spent five years making this movie and writing the songs; I thought it was great but it didn`t do very well commercially. Too bad because he obviously knew how to write entertaining dialogue.
You should've posted the scene at the party, when Jonah asks Cal, "What's the good word?"
Cal says, "You're the bright boy, you tell me."
Jonah says, "Steatopygous!"
Cal doesn't know the word and asks why that's the word.
Jonah replies, "Steatopygous. You know, a large rump--a fat ass."
If I came up to you and said, 'Hey, Cal, you sure have a fat ass,' you might be offended; but if I said, 'Hey, Cal, you sure look steatopygous,' you wouldn't know what the f*** I was talkin' about, would ya?"
I'm "relatively young", but I hadn't really heard of One Trick Pony, until I found an original casette tape at a Thrift Store. It's now one of my most prized possessions, even though it's crackly and about on its last play. Great album. "Ace in the Hole" has some of my favorite P.S. lyrics.
and look at his sad kind of looking face 'cos they don't pay attention to him..I could have kissed him there!! I liked the final part when Paul is joking with the guy and he doesn't get it,he sure deserved it! love ya Paul!!
Reality at it's brutalist. The real music business is all about the money and collateral. They don't care about talent or the actual music. This is the very reason why I am studying music composition in college and going for graduate degrees after my B.A. The songs I've got to offer the business just won't cut it. They're not what's hot today. Though this is just a movie interpretation, it's only second to the real thing. Rejection. Love the movie. Love Paul anyway.
If he had played them Mrs. Robinson or The Boxer, they still would have rejected it. Corporate Tools! They could release any music, good, bad or indifferent, and it would still sell as long as they put the promotion behind it. So why not just release great music and get rich off that? Oh, yeah, i forgot-They all have tin ears! That would explain the current state of "music." A very prescient film that needs a DVD release AND a ton of Promotion. I'll settle for the DVD.
@ZeropointZero70, I agree with you. As an aspiring songwriter and an emerging composer myself, I feel I am at a horrible disadvantage with my music. Although, there are a lot of people who don't like and don't listen to the top 40. Even my composition professor was saying that today, it takes a lot of self promotion, which I plan to do anyway. I'm currently trying to make a CD on my own called "Finite Meditation." I love Paul Simon and wish I grew up in the same era he did.
Sorry if this was mentioned before, but this is most likely based on Paul Simon's own problems with the record companies as based on the book Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business. Also read the book, "Appetite for Self Destruction" about the music business.
After doing live music and recording for many years AFTER I saw the movie, it really is an amazing commentary.
And,naturally like Tom Petty's The Last DJ it was dismissed by critics who were probably on the corporate payroll to help surpress the ugly side of the business. The movie bombed too when it should have at least been a sleeper. And everyone wonders why we are inundated with American Idol and other mediocre "reality" shows that showcase vocal prowess with no, or too much feeling and no songwriting skills or original act formation. Not to mention good old fashioned "Payola".
I have the movie on VHS video, but I bought it back in 1982 or 1983. I wonder if it still plays? (And yes, you could smoke in offices back then. You could smoke anywhere back then, including in department stores. I can still remember seeing stomped out cigarette butts on the floors of The Hecht Company in the D.C. area.)
i love that scene when paul calls cal a fat ass lol

Paul Simon was under-minded as a guitarist. I love his finger work just as much as his voice, really.

Thanks for this.
This seems to be the only way I'll be able to watch this movie certainly on this side of the pond.
It has been on at least once on Channel 4but that was yonks ago, and sadly no one seems inclined to re-screen it.
