Brilliant! I'm ashamed to say that I never heard Evie before - let alone that she composed this brilliant song (made famous by the Hollies). Thanks for posting and viva YouTube!
Evie rocks out in this hot track...classic should have been a chart-topper but still around for all to savor & enjoy...a true master, bravo Evie, you rock!!!
As I've said before, I actually prefer Ronstadt's version. This is because I have been partial to her since I saw her live when i was 15. I like Ms. Sand's voice, but I feel that her phrasing is not as crisp and the production was at a lower level than the others that followed. this was especially true for "Angel of the Morning".
She would have done better with a record company that did not go out of business a few weeks after she recorded "Angel" and if she had a producer help her with the phrasing, instrumentals, and backup vocals. I feel very sorry for her as she was a lovely and talented woman who was very very unlucky. She may have been huge if she had the right people behind her. She had the right songs, but due in part to lack of distribution, her songs were buried by remakes that were released on or before hers.
@rhythm61 Her version of "Angel in the Morning" is bland...but the Evie Sands production and perormance for "Take Me For A Little While" and "I Can't Let Go" are the best versions. I love the reverbed high notes at the end...it gives the song such a cool hypnotic effect. Speaking of Brit bands covering girl-group songs...the orignal "Do Wah Diddy" by the Exciters is much better vocally...and Bessie Banks' "Go Now" is magical, even though the Moody Blues managed a very decent cover.
Wow! I've always loved the Hollies version and to a lesser extent, Linda Rondstadt's. But I just heard this for the first time and...it gave me chills, it's so good.
I love the Hollies' energy; their cover is crisp and excellent. But Evie's got waaay more SOUL, and her Motown-inflected band (which, granted, doesn't touch the Hollies) is better suited to VOCALS, which are the focus in this version.
The approaches are different, but equally valid. The Hollies had the hit and she had the flop, so if you want to evaluate in those terms there's no question. But history will favor her flop in romantic terms, because it was so DAMN GOOD!
@ptownfreddy Very well said! I agree. I prefer Evie Sands, mostly because of all the soul she puts into it. like you said... I love your comment "but history will favor her flop in romantic terms..."
@Sjonne ie you think this version is 'bubblegum'? What an amazingly wrong opinion. The Hollies version is pleasing but unemotionally delivered pop, where Evie Sands original is a gutwrenching masterpiece of soulful perfection.
I'd be happy to never hear the Hollies version again...it's so empty by comparison
@TheMgeek I agree. So many British invasion covers are empty husks compared to the originals, yet they were vastly more popular. Once again artistry takes a poor second to commerce and marketing.
After listening to her songs, I am struck by the feeling that her style is much like Janis Joplin. Of course, Janis came along after Evie. I wonder if Janis was a fan?
I really like that recording. Sounds fresh and convincing, even after all these years. To bad there's no best-of of evies sixties recordings...

I never knew that this is THE original to the classic shoegaze hit "How you satisfy me" by sonic boom / Spectrum (which is great by itself)...
This ROCKS!!!

Omg! So I was just on google and I saw Evie's picture and her voice does not fit her baby face at all! Little face, big voice. :)

As much as I love the Hollies cover, the original is incomparable, and Evie Sands is drop dead gorgeous.

Sounds like Yummy yummy I got love in my Tommy.
This is a very simple version of the original by The Hollies.
Mrs. Sands got a very irriteten irriterende voice sang stemme. I can only hear obout 1 minute then I close down the volume.
Dette er en forfærdelig sangerinde . Hollies har Graham Nash and leadsing .... Great.
