  • heyya all, yer i missed out on the recent action - i'm resting up after having a knee reconstruction - really crappy timing considering the set up on this event. I have been giving guidance to other chasers on target areas, it's the best that i can do for now. I pathetically hobbled out to my driveway in an attempt to get some footage last night, but the cell really tapped into something north of Canberra, well beyond my limited viewpoint. I hope to be back out chasing within a couple weeks!

  • Hi Greg - LOVE your pix and this vid was trés cool! Go the timelapse, I love the timelapse - more timelapse, please!!

Just wondering... were you out and about last night (18th Feb) when that humungous thunderhead went past Canberra? I took some photos of the 'head as it passed north of Mt Anslie and I was fevently hoping *the entire time* that Greg so&so was doing his usual impeccable job of capturing the stupendous display as it was happening...

PS: any pictures of this storm on stills?

  • prospect4186 yes but in the spring....look up extreme tornado tours...tvn is the best one

  • It is my dream to see a storm like this!

  • Is it possible to go on a storm chasing holiday in the US

  • It never even touches the ground. How can you classify that as a tornado? At this point and time it's nothing more than a funnel cloud. Not hating at all, it is still an awesome video! Just wondering though, did it ever reach the ground? Nice capture of the rotation. You can really see it in this video. Most videos like this it is really hard to make out the rotation.

  • That was near my mums house and bredbo got flooding in some areas. My brother took photos and mum wrote the article about it in the Monary Post. Flood photo included.

  • @Naxer84

Hi Naxer, thanks for the heads up regarding the news article. If you take the tornado aside, the flooding for me was the real feature, because it impacted upon residents greatly in some areas. It's the type of event that can easily kill someone due to flash flooding, luckily the township dodged a bullet. Some of the creeks would have turned into torrents by the aftermath that i saw 2 days after. Anyone caught up with water running that fast would be in serious trouble.

  • everyone else tight lipped?

    I'll say it then....this isn't a tornado...

  • @mitchamus

Hey Mitch, love to hear to your thoughts regarding it not being a tornado matey....

  • @gregsoandso

Just cause you have a headache... don't call it a brain tumor...

  • @mitchamus

Ah right, thanks for your reply. I was sort of expecting a discussion regarding the conditions surrounding the storm in terms of the meteorological set up on the day and the conditions as they unfolded. All cool.

  • im so jealous right now... i may know nothing about storms... but i love being in one and watching! this must have been a breath-taking experience! i will be subscribing to you!

  • watching again and trying to imagining actually being there. :D

  • Great stuff, Greg! Awesome timelapse and amazing rotation! Love the excitement in your voice too haha

  • From this footage, it looks like it was more like a dust devil on steroids. The news blew it out to something much bigger than it was. Still, it must feel great being in that moment in person. Good job on capturing that moment and awesome stuff with the time-lapse at the end.

  • @gerardrampal

Good point regarding the media. When chasers report tornadic activity we often find that the media takes an angle that they have pre-emptively built upon which misconstrues things. I went down to the region yesterday to talk landowners whom may have seen the funnel /tornado, and they were under the impression that the WHOLE storm WAS the tornado, which comes back to the media getting it wrong. Impressive storm though, just glad that no properties were damaged by the tornado.

  • This storm moved down the valley into Canberra and gave us a much needed relief after a hot week. It is great as Greg has identified the vital parts of the the storm cell forming into the two tornadoes. Well done.

  • Greg that is really sensational footage, well done mate. Really nice work, timelapse capped it off nicely.

  • Thanks everyone, lovely responses. I will work on the rest of the footage from this storm tomorrow. I'm bit of a newbie when it comes to cinematography, so it's all new to me. Nice way to cut my teeth, hey? Only 15 years of chasing to finally score a storm that finally does the business..... hope for more in the future.

  • Just beautiful I am so jealous Greg. Awesome vid.

  • Hey Greg! Awesome catch mate. I find it interesting how the rotation on the right is clockwise while the rotation on the left appears more anti-clockwise! Certainly footage that will be looked back on in the future. :)

  • This Vid deserves a place in my playlist 2011-2012 Storm Season Soup

  • Great Vid Greg

  • Awesome video Greg! Thank you for posting! :D
