  • That's Rick Whitehead on guitar, he told me about this performance a few years ago and now to find it here is waaaay cool. Great job guys.

  • Ken Green is the conductor here. I know... Because he was my high school band teacher and was the one who showed me this video.

I LOVE YOU KEN!!! (in a not creepy way...)

  • this is just too much

  • 2nd trombone on tambourine. Yes.

  • All I can say is... WOW . Thanks for posting.

  • Great show. Too bad we can't get big band spots on tv now-a-days.

The second tune is also sometimes called "Do Have At It". At least that's what it says on the chart itself. Fun to play, especially on bari. :)

  • The second tune is Paul's Tune,a great arrangement by Paul Kondziela, and a great band.can you imagine a big band getting a 10min.primetime slot now. What have we come to?

  • Another reason for 10 minutes is that they had more time in those days. The Tonight Show was 90 min back then.

  • even if the Tonight Show was 5 hours today, a big band would not get 10 seconds of airtime..

probably the reason i don't watch the Tonight Show anymore..LOL

  • @dallas1963 Regrettably, you're probably right. I don't see it happening, either.

  • The reason the band got the airtime is because Johnny heard us while we were at rehearsal and came down from his office and told the producer (Craig Tennis?) to scrap Roger Miller's tune and specifically asked me to play "Jesus Christ Superstar" which was popular at the time. Paul's tune, as we received it from Phil Wilson, was entitled Do Have At It. And as far as I know, this is the only time a military band has ever performed on the Tonight Show. Thanks for enjoying it.

  • @kgpianoman You guys were (and are) awesome. My favorite "Band Of Note" band was the 1980-86 period. Rick Whitehead was playing the best guitar I had ever heard- No one could touch him. In fact, Mike Crotty and the rest of the active duty personnel were simply awesome.

  • The first time I met the band before joining....

  • Tim Eyermann is on alto too.

  • Dave PALAMAR is correct spelling. He joined at age 19.

  • I am grateful for whoever posted this. I saw this performance the night it was broadcast and ran across it by accident today. Great performance!

  • Wow, this particular band (early 70's) used to come to Mobile, AL every year for a national high school jazz festival and did clinics every day, had open rehearsals and kick-ass concerts, of course. I was in high school in Mobile at the time and I learned a ton from this drummer, Dave Palomar. I hope I spelled it correctly.

  • Great Band!!!

  • @ 3:00 --- Trombonist is playing tambourine. That's when you know the gigs are drying up, you're called to play a gig as long as you bring your tambourine. Darn shame.

  • Is this the Bob Bunton band? I was stationed with Dave Napierin 1956-1957 and played with him in a septet.Amazing to see him here on youtube.

  • the tune they start at about 20 seconds in is called "do have at it"

  • At 1:43ish, they start playing "Paul's Tune" by Paul Kondziela. It's a Buddy Rich tune. I love the Airmen of Note!! Any North Texas alums in the band at this point?

  • is mike smukal in the trombone section? Because he was a guest soloist with the Las Vegas brass band i play in 2 months ago and said he was in the band with his brother Ken. He was simply amazing.

  • Yep! He's the one playing trombone and tambourine!

  • Mike Smukal is in the trombone section and gets wild on the tambourine. It looks like Ken Smukal, Ernie Hensley and Dave Napier are also in the band.

  • I was stationed with Dick Perry and did a video with Captain Ken Green after he left the Note to command the AF Band at Scott AFB. I spent many hours listening to Dave Palamar on Airmen of Note recordings and learned a great deal from those recordings. This brings back a lot of memories. Some of them are good.

  • I remember watching this performance in 1972! This band is really together, and I would recommend them to anyone who loves Big Band Jazz.
