holy cow, the gall on that guy to bring up his mama like that! Lest you be looking for a far too polite declining to comment up in yo face, I highly suggest you don't EVER talk about David Bowie's mama
I'm afraid Harty struggled interviewing certain musicians and people in the art world... I don't know why as his whole show revolved around just that... It may have been his working class upbringing and his continuation into university education, but there often was an air of being a cut above... Saying that, he did develop some quite interesting interviews.
I want a Tardis so I can go back and strangle this man. Ducan Jones is wonderful in film and David Bowie is the most influental music artist. What is wrong with this man? How can you hate David Bowie? I really don't understand it. He's been perfectly nice even when this man has been very rude and harsh.
why should he be a boy or girl sitting in a basement in notting hill? what a question, as if david should be guilty beeing david bowie and not mary miller......
we are what we are and he got his gifts and is giving us the wonderful results of his talents.....
"I will be David Bowie." Loved this reply! If only he could have then punched the prick in the face or caused permanent damage to other... essential... bits of anatomy.
Harty was totally pointless in his provocative attitude...I don't know why...maybe he thought himself as a bright and smart interviewer...Anyway Bowie was wonderful in his icy responses...
Harty got mad at Bowie for not answering personal questions (although he answered most of them really) and then dropped in all sorts of horseshit observations about "You were in control of THAT situation" or "Why don't you introduce it on your end then?" after getting the info wrong TWICE. Terrible job by him. David could've been really mean but luckily for Harty he's a nice chap and was a bit stoned as he usually was back then.
Don't know that this England exists any longer, but the interview seems like the ultimate/absurd rebuttal/confirmation of English "politeness."
I understand Bowie was controversial at the time and that may have contributed to Harty's venomous tone, but watching this exchange makes me grateful I live in Mexico and don't have to indulge jealous, spineless, and unimaginative pricks like Harty. Yes, DB takes the high ground and promotes, but I'd have flown to the UK to snap the guy in two..
"I was though." <3 I love his humor at the end. "Will you be truthful and honorable..." What the heck did you call what he did Harty? David was patient and nice about the whole thing. I swear Harty is Bowie's character foil. He just doesn't seem to like him. I like David's interviews he's so nice to everyone. Harty's questions near the end were uncalled for.
"It's a suit!" Ha. Such proper outrage at such inane questions. How on earth did Harty ever graduate from journalism school, and what is his bone to pick here?
Thanks for sharing this. I'm a huge Bowie fan and seeing these interviews are great. Do you have anymore Russell Harty shows. I'm looking for a couple where The Who was on and one with Ken Russell promoting Tommy
That guy Harty is annoying... David is so intelligent and sweet always (:

Where's the "Golden Years" part? David introduced it and then it did a blurry thing and no song...
LOL I like how they used "functional" like a swear word!

Harty didn't do his research about Bowie's background and made a fool of himself. He was a selfish interviewer.
