@dunti21 why is a CVT slow? Beyond about 30mph you can accelerate the the car at maximum revs and no shift times. It doesn't have to be like the Prius transmission where it limits you to 4000rpm, (although in a diesel that's where the power is)! Unless you mean boring as in you like changing gears by hand instead of just using accelerator and brake
@TimpBizkit Yea I know that. I did mean it's boring. In a car with DSG you also get full acceleration due to lightning quick gear changes... I would prefer that even though u don't press a clutch.
@dunti21 I have a question about flappy paddle gear boxes. Do they block you from selecting too low a gear, say you're revving up 3rd and you bump the left shifter, does it go into 2nd and scream at you or stay in 3rd until you're going slow enough (to below 60 or whatever 2nd gear limit is?)
@TimpBizkit Yes, they will protect you from blowing your engine by over-revving. Also, if you stay in a gear for too long, too high in the red line it will automatically shift up so as not to damage the engine. This I am sure of in VW, but is also extremely likely in all other manufacturers
@ringwormts115 ill give it a shot, horsepower how strong the motor is and torque is how hard the wheels will turn, as it is applied in the automobile industry actually though, Horsepower is linear force while torque is rotary. Its just that, with the transmission, axles, and the tons of steps that the explosive force inside a cylinder of a motor has to go through before actually becoming the rotation force on the wheels, it has come out as a different figure depending on how the motor etc i
@ringwormts115 Think of torque as how hard the car accelerates, while horsepower is how long the car can keep accelerating. In the TDI, and diesels in general, you get a lot of torque (due to the way the cylinders/pistons are built-- look up "compression ignition") but low horsepower. What this means is that you can accelerate harder than a normal car, but for not as long (because the engine can't rev as high-- again due to the size of the cylinders/pistons and compression ratio).
@TGnumber2 it isj't the rightest explanation. in comparative engines the difference is in how fast the revs grow in petrol and diesel. for the time that diesels get to about 2000, the petrol will do about 4000
@TGnumber2 actually diesel cars can accelerate for the same amount of time as their petrol equivalents but the gear ratios are different so you could typically do 30mph in gear 1 at 5000rpm.
@rock3tcat yes as another user wrote, "Think of torque as how hard the car accelerates, while horsepower is how long the car can keep accelerating""
wich means that a car producing more low end /mid range torque will be faster on the streets compared to a car that has a lot of high end HP but low torque...

@ringwormts115 Torque is the amount of energy the engine puts out, horsepower is how fast it does it.
hows that for simple?
Agentsteve93 10 months ago
they should make the tdi awd so that all the torque will actually move the car instead of spinning tires.
