Wow, his speech really brought a new perspective to somethings I've been guilty of. I always point and laugh at those who "try too hard" but maybe that's not so bad. To put yourself out for embarrassment, but at the same time, you grow from the experience.
Improve things by working with what's already there.
Cynicism is cowardly.
These are the three things Colbert talks about here and none of them, yes NONE of them are insightful, original, or even funny. If he were my commencement speaker, I'd feel a little let down.
that guy is funny as hell, but he's really smart, too. the first 2 parts, he was just funny. but in less than 4 minutes, he gave some pretty great advice. some people can't say that in their entire speech. he's awesome.
Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics dont learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying yes begins things. Saying yes is how things grow. Saying yes leads to knowledge.
Tina Fey talks about the "yes, and.." approach to improv/life in her book as well. I live improv people.
