Yes you can, but I prefer to tie moss to small rocks, preferably flat type, and arrange on the area you want to have the carpet. ~Happy aquascaping :D
good idea, it looks ok even now! I live in the UK and I once put java moss in an outside pool in the summer - I thought it would die in the winter here especially as ice formed on top of the water but it didnt!! the next spring it started growing again even faster - Java moss is tough!
@poojkhgf Thanks for posting that... I've always wondered whether I'd be able to grow it outside. I guess we have to be careful with it though; it could become an 'invasive' species. Willow moss (our native species) grows really well btw if you're looking for an outdoor moss.
Too bad there's no update :( No one ever seems to post one. I did a java moss wall 6 months ago and posted both a how to and a couple of updates on my channel if anyone is interested.
Ahaha, I read this elsewhere and wanted to see a video of it.
Anyway, I was considering doing this (without suction cups, find a way through it) but shaping it so that it's kind of a hill shape (who needs rocks? lolol)
Thanks for the video bud, i'm just wandering how much moss to use? I'm thinking about a M. W. in my 15G (56L) tank. I'm thinking one fist worth (so the same size as a fist) of moss per 24"x12" (60x30), so 2 fist worths of moss.
Definitely 2 fist worth of moss is better, you will have enough to spread, well, you can still make do with 1 fist worth....make sure it's not the size of a child's fist, hahaha....just kidding :D
Hmm...if I can remember at that time, I only use a palmful(probably 3x3) as that's was all I have, and it's barely enough, but it still works :D...How big will your wall be?
So your wall size would be around 20" x 12", I'm guessing that you are going to make a full wall. Your surface area and mind is almost same, 4x6 moss should be enough...but of course a little more is better, so you don't have to worry if you have less and you can still use the extra for other scape :D
Yeah...sorry about that, that tank was later placed in my dad office, and was not well maintain. Anyway you can check my blog for other updates as well :D
@borneosucker kwl i might do this once i get some more moss, i have a brackish tank and i want to slowly make it into a planted tank (not a wise choise of water type though lol) but it will still look kwl
@borneosucker because im going to get a figure 8 pufferfish and i dont want to restart the entire tank i just finished cycling it, and whatever people say there isnt a universal species of bacteria that can live in both fresh and salt, there are 2 different strands, one for fresh and one for salt
@borneosucker meh... for water thats half saltwater theres still alot of plants that can live in it, there just hard to find in stores, there mostly online, the good things is there the toughest plants you can find, there dont die and even thrive in freshwater, heck the call even overgrow in freshwater
Thanks to my friend Matt Ford, the song is the theme song from the TV series 'Hawaii-Five-O'
and actually scrolling down the comment here, juanjesuschong mention the title of the song....lol....I didn't know what he was commenting at first, now I know :D
i live in southcarolina i wonder if petsmart sells java moss. Do you know anyone other places where i can pick some up i have a vid of my tank take a look
Sorry for my late reply...Sorry, I don't know anyone near you, but here's what you can do, post a thread to some of the fish keeping forum or related ones, probably there are some hobbyist near you that have.
Or
Try here mizuworld[dot]com
They seem to have lots of variety of plants, however they are from Singapore, maybe they do international too, check them out :)
Most important thing to consider is how you can secure the wall as close to the aquarium tank, to prevent any small fish to swim and get trap at the back of the wall. If you can acheive this, than I don't think there's any problem installing a moss wall in an establish tank.
I hope I address your question well. By the way, what's your concern in adding new plant in an establish tank?
Could I use this design but for a carpet?

@borneosucker Well, Im making a carpet in a 10 gallon. The tank is 20Lx10Wx12H. I just bought a 4"x6" for $.99. Hopefully it will be enough.

@borneosucker No, Im making a carpet on the floor for now. I might make a wall later but that means more maintenance.
How often do you have to trim your wall?
asdfxyz1 1 year ago
@asdfxyz1
Owh!!!.......haha I got confuse...I thought a carpet effect on the wall :D
Well, moss carpet is nice too :D....for me I just tie moss on pebbles, and then arrange them where I want the moss carpet to be :D
I've never trim my moss wall before :)...but that moss wall tank is torn down, due to some issue :(

how long does it take for it to grow into a full wall?
ekham1 1 year ago
@ekham1
It depends on how much moss you started with, environment, and etc.
But in my case, it took me around 3 month to start covering the wall...6 month to get a dense growth of moss :D

Java moss has become illegal where I live. Good thing I have a nice healthy bright green ball of it bigger than your head in my tank still.
I did this to my 55 gallon today with the bigger screen type. I cant wait till it grows.
Vlaxitov 2 years ago
Bigger than my head is a lot!!!
by the way, why is it illegal in your place?
borneosucker 2 years ago
Because the DNR has deemed it invasive to my area.
