  • best band ever takes me back to my teens fuckin love it

  • Best bloody band ever with a fucking great sound! Still sends tingles down my spine...

  • on Westbourne groveThis was filmed behind Hamrax Motorcycle shop Westbourne Grove West London

  • you have no idea how good it was to be a an 18 year old when this song came out.

  • AS GOOD AS IT GETS AND SO MUCH MORE

  • you can see people working on that wall/building in the background (:

  • JJ's bass line is beyond amazing.

  • @strangledTASH

    Always.

  • What a fucking wall of sound! Love it forever!

  • I love that bit at the end with the keyboard solo leading into the bass outro.

  • bloody good

  • and

  • Love it

  • Not only is Dave an awesome player but his vocal harmonies are excellent. Gawd Hugh had perfect attitude, his voice and pronounciation was inspired . Those were the days - endlessly listening to x cert, black and white, and rattus . I met Hugh a few years back after an acoustic gig in sydney, what a gentleman. The black and white tour was my first gig in dublin. musta been about 78 or 79. I want to see the little boys and girls destroy their toys

  • Seconded. I've been trying to get that swirl for 20 years. God bless DG.

  • Dave Greenfield had this Hammond set up stolen whist the band were on tour in the USA and never regained that original sound.

Brilliant stuff and to think that Jet is still playing full on sets at the age of 72 !

    Viva La Stranglers !!!

    BTW...According to todays press (19/12/2009 )

Simon Cowell reckons the Stranglers put him off rock music for life ?

    He`s a much,much bigger Wanker than I already thought !

  • Simon Cowell is a shit peddling pimp. Viva La Folie Viva La Stranglers.

  • The whole band lost their gear on that trip. If it had just been Dave's Hammond that'd gone missing they could have replaced it easily without any change in their sound - but with JJ's customised "barracuda" bass sound gone they were really screwed.

PS: Pete Waterman once the said The Stranglers were one of the best groups to come out of Britain. Let's get him and Cowell in the ring, there's gotta be a TV voting show in that!

  • screw that, I'LL get in the ring with Cowell...and win. and i'm a chick. one swift kick to the dick and when he's down i'll duct tape headphones to his hair helmet and make him listen to every Stranglers album ever made.

  • Agreed, in light of that it's abit scary that we rely on him for finding the talent of today!!

  • @BIGMC1300

Simon Cowell is a fucking poofter if that is the case!

    He's a twat anyway.....!!

  • @markyboythewolf Hear hear!

  • @BIGMC1300 what a c**t !!!

  • I love the way this music video is shot, so many angles with a hand held camera! Love it.

It just goes to show that today's music video's haven't really moved on from this innovative idea of the 1970/80's.....all they can rely on these days is the scale of a video shoot and how much glitz and glamour can be entertained - probably why so many songs are so shit - its because the video's are consuming all your attention. Straighten out!

  • GREAT KEYBORD. IT IS STILL great a very PUNKROCK SONG

  • they dont make em like this anymore. todays bands are pussys

  • BALLS

  • Until now I was only aware of the Live Xcerts version of Straighten Out - this rocks! Thanks for sharing.

  • Great band with an effective wall of sound!

  • My favourite band. You gotta love JJ for wearing a T-Shirt depicting a cock & bollocks in a pair of sunglasses (clearly visible at 0:24 and 01:45)

  • Line the walls. Line the walls.

  • Keyboard solos never looked so cool :D

  • super chanson! j 'aime ça...

  • you can hear the influence of Buddy Holly in his voice

  • Uh, no I can't.

  • gu-uh-uh-irls...

  • Funny thing is JJ beat the Clash bassist up after he spat too close to him or on him what ever lol they went out back for a scrap can you imagine Huge and ramone stood watching my bassist against yours wanna put money on it.

  • hugh and ramone?it was hugh and strummer....

  • No it was Hugh and Ramone Class bassist stood in for Ramones bassist

  • really confusing.i read differently in pashion is a fashion..nevermind

  • Ha who care's lol I heard it on the Robert Elms radio show from some Gordi guest he had on,another thing the guy said was Chic bassist was amazed by Norman watt roys bass playing when they were on Pop of the Pop,cools as Bernard edwards its a good bassist too.

  • I liked Bernard Edwards. Norman Watt-Roy can play too.

    AL

  • Dave played that solo with one hand!

  • fuckin a !

  • Truly the greatest musos of all time!!!!!!!

  • This song is simply GREAT!!!

    I adore them

  • first group i ever seen, 1982, and im so happy i lost my gig virginity to them, imagine how you,d feel if you,d seen someone shite like robbie williams or some fucking boy band. and someone asked you what was the first group you,ve seen, how bad would that be.

  • very bad!

  • Ramones are Ramones, Stranglers are Gods....

  • look at dave's fingers on that keyboard go,snazzy twat!!.

    gotta love him though!

  • always loved this video at 14 my mother deplored jjs t. shirt. now my daughter at 18 thinks ive got a screw loose.... long live the glers :)

  • what an awesome double a side this was with something better change. the photo on the bak was very inspiring wen we started a band in the eighties as kids i remember!! stranglers and clash...awesome!!

  • lol at 1:03

there are some people having beer or something on the rooftop

  • The coolest keyboard solo ever

  • That was the idea back then Punk bands looked like they had stepped out of the audience not designer bondage gear.

  • JJ is such a cutie! Enough about the base - there are organ, guitar, sound - let it there be rock!

  • This one really rocks, and good quality on the clip to!

  • lindo

  • Jean Jacques reminds me of Dee Dee Ramone soo much.

  • Gorgeous...makes me lips want some hot punk boy...ouch...

  • great rocknrol

  • skunner64 is bang on

  • this was a fukin great b side single...

  • hugh cornwell :)

  • shit hot aint he

  • JJB is one fucking great bassist and thats a fact

  • I could never figure out where J.Black fitted in; the other guys seem to want to play at 1000mph, contrary to his style?

  • Jet is a drummer par excellence he keeps the beat and never swamps the rest of the band with over the top action. The Stranglers have to be one of the most musically proficient bands of the whole punk scene with their instantly recognisable sound and great lyrics.Pure class

  • exactly

imagine jj combined with steve porcaro

  • very underated he had complete control of that bass thats for sure

  • that green precision bass jj is playing there is fucking gorgeous!

  • most undrated group ever'''' there fantastic, anyone agree....stratin out.

  • Liverpool on sunday.I have seen the Strangs more times than i can remember, god i love it.

  • Going to see them in a few days for what must be the hundreth time but still looking forward to it like the first time. But what a tour this time - fortytwoforty - just like we made up the set lit, fantastic

  • The Stranglers were proper musicians and that separated them from most of the punk bands during the late 1970s. That's what I think though they had that punk attitude.

  • i seen them in 1982, those where the days, what an old bastard i am haha.

  • English music at the time, ruled the waves.

  • 18th October 2008 - Cambridge - 12 hours to go - JJB - one of my bass playing influences - can't wait!

  • 1st saw them in 76, I will die a happy man.

  • not as popular as I thought they were reading their wikipedia, great live band though, one of the best.

  • Yes, they get better the more you here them.

    Most underated band!

  • Hugh was the name of the singer

  • the shugmiester up here scotland the dogs. jj is the greatest bass player alive . they are all fuckin majic. see u all in the acadamy on the 1st of the 11 nov. cant fuckin wait. inblack

  • StranglerS SUPEB BAND, JUST GETTING BETTER AS YOU GET OLDER, SOME BANDS YOU JUST LOVE PLAYING S1V ALWAYS WIN THE MOST PLAYED,

  • I would say this is me fav stranglers song, just love it!!!

  • JJ Burnell is the greatest ever bass player

  • FUCKIN YEAH|!

  • Hell yeah!!

  • i know him..hid daughter went to hockerill school good friends with my daughter..super bloke..superb guitarist..and kick ass at kung fu.

  • Yep he had a bit of a reputation for belting journalists and arseholes at gigs.certainly not a bloke to fuck with

  • jj bassnell, vrooooooooooom booom

  • What a fuckin band

  • jj burnell made me wanna lern bass more that any other bass player

  • i used to have this song on a compilation tape...loved JJ's bass sound, & was super impressed by his part at the end. there were a bunch of bassists that were a big influence on my "lead bass" style: peter hook, john entwhistle, robert smith's bass part on "let's go to bed..."

  • Check out Stuart Morrow's playing on the second New Model Army LP 'No Rest For The Wicked'. Under-rated is his middle name...

  • Modern bands take note and learn.

  • hes doing the live version of the hammond solo there, thats why the sync doesnt fit, put it to X certs and VOILA.

    LITTLE KNOWN FACT

  • I like the bass outro at the end

  • Very well done.

  • Legends, simple as.

  • Another fuckin topper from one of the best sounding bands ever.still have the single.great stuff

  • My error

It was 'Go Buddy Go' .... another Stranglers Classic !!!

  • From memory ... this was the B side (or what was classed as a double A side 45) to Peaches.

Will have to go up in the loft to dust off the single to confirm.

Great memories listening to this !!!

  • double a side with something better change

  • hehe yup !!!! Both ecelent trak!!!

  • bass player ( 10/10)

  • "I want to see the little girls and boys destroy their toys"!

  • Dunno about Always the Sun... But the Stranglers?.. Always the best!!

  • old is gold

  • Their first album, Rattus Norvegicus is an absolute classic. Compulsory listening at Uni' back in '80. All Killer, no filler!

  • totally agree mate godbless the MENINBLACK

  • thank you

  • I'm only 21 but these guys were my mum and dads favourite band and I just kinda grew up with it. So I as young at the time, but I can safely say they are one of my favourite bands

every single element is amazing, JJ's bass is just sick as, Hugh is just really primal I think,Dave's keys are awesome and don't forget Jet's drums people! It all fits together so well

the thing about these guys that bands didn't get right when it was my turn (well still is) with music is that is was RAW

    bravo

  • i 14 and was brought up with this,

we had good childhoods i can tell.

  • I don't know your mum or dad but obviously they must be cool.

  • The Stranglers. Unique!

  • I saw Hugh solo last week opening for From The Jam. His new songs are good, but he looked old and tired. At least he's not fat like the rest of the group now is!! I wish they would get back together, but I prefer to remember them like in this video.

  • I still have the 7" vinyl (Something Better Change / Straighten Out) that I bought the day it was released in the UK. When I'm 80 I'll still be listening to this tune with a smile on my face!

  • pure class!

  • Absolutely Soopeerrb!!!

  • Quality with a capital Q

  • "The human flesh is sacred...until there is no more food."

    So true.

  • these guys are fuckin great

  • i saw them live several times. jj's bass goes through you like a knife, like jack casady of jefferson airplane!

  • WHAT A BURGER!!!

  • ...Line the walls. Line the walls...

  • Fantastic stuff in every sense. It is such a short song but it has got everything you want- sharp vocals, good guitaring, absolutely astounding bass playing, keyboard solos, good drumming and interesting lyrics!

  • hilovitavleshbiglib

  • Their guitars are plugged in and Dave changes the settings on his organ mid-song. That's what I call reality TV.

  • Fucking Roofless!

  • I wish it wouldn´t be,but the Stranglers with Hugh Cornwell were one of the best, and for sure underrated bands in history. But now they´re somehow boring, allthough still great musicians...

  • Love it. The Stranglers were such a good band when Cornwell was with them. I saw them a lot between 1977 and 1980 and their gigs were always visceral. Sometimes too much so... lots of violence. But great music. And now they get no respect...

  • the stranglers were a great band they started in 1974 i think and did there own thing not jumping on the punk band wagon they sounded like no one else i no

  • best song

  • The guys were, and still are brilliant musicians.

  • Straight Now ? No Wayo

  • notice the brickies on the opposite roof obviously thinking "whats going on over there like"lol

  • These are punk kings..you idiots

  • This is when bands weren't being bitches to bass players.

  • the bass line in this song is just the illness

  • awakening: 1978 I visited London and came back as a Punk, whatever that ment ...gg, it changed my life!!

  • i never noticed how much Dave looks like Freddie Mercury !!!!! JJB LEGEND.

  • Is it true about the curtains still being the same?

  • Goth kings?? Dont look much like Goths too me =D

Are you sure you don't mean PUNK kings?

  • Wicked!

  • GREAT BAND!

    Please tour America!

    AL

  • 2:19 i reckon JJ's got superhuman bass powers! Its a shame you don't get bass like that now

  • Freaking awesome!! you don't hear music like this anymore.

  • nice

  • you better put webcam in your goat ass and show the world its depths.

  • There's nothing similar nowadays at all! Vocal, bass, guiter, drums, and keyboards in perfect harmony...

  • Fantastic band. This song was my call to arms. The best double A side ever. ('Something Better Change' was the other side). ACE!!!!

  • This was filmed somewhere just off of PORTOBELLO ROAD

  • Thats the Stranglers when they all liked each other. One of their best tracks.

  • One of the best bass lines ever! Good old JJ Burnall.

  • hugh looks fucking hot! JJ is awesome, definitely more than a punk facade??? get real mangateen! i mean just how influential was his bass style! Obviously you are a teenager so i'll make some allowances for you but really be careful about making such statements

  • Jack Greenfield is Bach...nice.

  • Me Like A Lot!

  • Great bassline!

  • It's an RAF flying Suit...very Fashionable.....then! lol

  • great song

    good looking Hugh Cornwell, hot

    totally on

    fuck punk

    and wave

    yo

  • this is punk, tosser.. Stranglers are in that genre you cock

  • yes

    that was punk

    pussy

  • God damn but they sound as fresh now as they did back then....

Even minus Hugh .. LONG LIVE THE STRANGLERS

  • love it

  • Stranglers - punks who knew how to play (and boy did they play). up there with the Clash.

  • Simon Gallup from The Cure was influenced by The Stranglers' bass player. Simon has mentioned in one interview that he was his favourite and wanted to play the bass with such a feeling. Well, Simon's bass playing reflects that in several ways.

  • tony Wilson called the Stranglers punk imposters. Just jumped on the passing train

  • According to JJ the Sex Pistols and the Clash went to see the Stranglers play before they started their own bands...

Not sure if that's accurate but if it's true then Tony Wilson might have to have a rethink.
