  • John Tonelli is from where I live!! :)

  • You could argue that Barasso did choke. But how about the ENTIRE Pens team allowing Kasparaitis to affect Lemieux' play to the degree that he did. Or the team not being able to snap out of it after Kevin Stevens' collision with Rich Pilon?? What Al Arbour accomplished here, & 10 years earlier in the '83 Finals was GENIUS!

Al Arbour: definitely 1 of the most underappreciated figures in all of sports!

  • I don't want to take anything away from the Oilers. They were a great, young team on the rise. They deserved and earned their '84 cup win. Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Kurri, a future Hall of Fame team. However, I didn't like the 2-3-2 format either. This was done to cut down on travel time. Such BS. If it had stayed 2-2-1-1-1 the Islanders definitely would of had a better, but not guaranteed chance at winning their 5th Stanley Cup. BTW, I'm all for getting rid of Bettman...

  • Nice vid, TheWebBard!

  • Hockey was so much more intense back in this era. I remember before game 1 against the Flyers in 1980, Al Arbour & Pat Quinn delayed the start of the game by about 1/2 an hour due to their players getting lengthy pre game instructions. These days, ( Gary Bettman's NHL) you have twat women rinkside reporters interviewing coaches during playoff games!! WTF??!! Could you imagine any of those guys ( Arbour, Bowman, etc.) putting up with that shit??

  • @19keel25 Your talking to the wrong person. I'm not a fan of female reporters who are just there cause they look good, but I like Goalies that are actually able to occasionally stop the puck.

  • No hope, this team is finally going in the right direction.

For some reason we were made to suffer for those 4 Cups, well, that shit is behind us.

Now win that 5th cup that was taken from us by the league in 1984.

  • @mrceebees14 Your going to have to explain to me how the cup was taken from us? The Oilers were a team on the rise, and the Islanders were an older team on the way down. Doesn't seem like the NHL interfered.

  • @TheWebBard The league changed the format RIGHT AFTER the Isles defeated the Candiens in the conf finals.

I remember hearing it the very next day after the series was over and the only explanation the league gave was 'we want to save on traveling costs." That is total BS because 1) This is the finals, 7 games left in a long grueling season and NOW they are concerned about cost? ALL OF THE SUDDEN? BUUULLLSHITTT!!! and 2) The new format was 2-3-2 from 2-2-1-1-1, so you are saving 3 games

  • @mrceebees14 Totally on point bro!!

  • @mrceebees14 '84 & '85 were the ONLY finals that went 2-3-2.

  • @19keel25 Yup.

    Geez, wonder why.

  • @mrceebees14

Right on 2-3-2 i s absolutely brutal...... explain to me how the advantaged team has to can't dare split one of their first 2 at home then go back for three straight away - it almost guarantees being down 3 games to 2 if you are even lucky to come back home for games 6 and 7. The nerve of the league to do that immediately before the final series...................

19 straight playoff series won stands today in all sports. This team had unwavering character more than any team

  • @TheWebBard part 2...... when you have played over 80 (at this point) is going to save all that much money??????????? Are you kidding me? That isn't even 5% of what teams spend in a series, how is that justifiable?

This had everything to do with politics in the NHL, nothing more. The Isles had to go up against the Oilers AND the NHL.

    1984 was BS.

  • @TheWebBard Better get the books out, because I was there when they did it.

It was right after the Montreal series that the Isles won. They "all of the sudden" decided that because the teams were very far apart in distance, that the playoff format would be changed from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2. The two best home teams that year were the Isles and Oilers, if the Oilers could win one of those games on the road, they would go home with a very good chance to sweep the Isles.

    We got fucked.

  • @mrceebees14 Keep your fingers crossed for 8/1/11.

  • @19keel25 Don't remind me, we are all freaking out over here.

  • @TheWebBard The NHL didn't interfere?? Yeah, ok.

  • This video is great!

  • @cortez899 Thanks, the NHL Needs to do some Islander ones.

  • @TheWebBard They will, when we win the 5th cup, which will come sooner then you think.

  • @mrceebees14 I hope so...
