This show was so cool and Darren McGavin was so underated as an actor! Never fully appreciated! This show went south because of the lack of idea's and bad writing. It should have been done as a made for TV movie every couple of months and with attention to detail it could have gone on forever! The X-Files was such total shit and "Twilight" I wouldn't wipe my ass with! But this show still survives almost 40 years later and McGavin can never be replaced! He went on...and stepped into legend!
i loved kolchak as a kid many scary miyan, zoobie , vampire , jack boy ripper nights cool as cats dude, i wish some one would make a remake that did not suck ? speilberg go at her dude god speed.
Oh my gosh, amazing show! loved it! I have the box set. I don't think I'm the only female who thought Kolchak was hot with his shirt off. Loved the yellow Mustang, the bowling shoes, the seersucker suit and the attitude. Kolchak is the icon !
@denzelsnipes69 He killed a female vampire like 42959 said. It was one of the best episodes they did. The beginning started in Las Vegas, so I always thought it was meant to be linked to the original movie that started it all. The rest of the story was set in Los Angeles. And as you can see it was one of the most stunning visually.
I never missed this show. I just got it on dvd and watchi it with my 16 yo daughter. The first paperback I ever read was in 3rd grade and was the book from the night strangler episode.
This was one of my favorite shows in the 1970's. The intro is great and Darren Mcgavin was the dude(RIP) Those were the good old days of great tv programming.
The CBS friday night movies in 74. I saw the ripper for the first time at age 11. "Can you explain how a man can jump from a four story building...and survive?!" Darren and simon oakland had machine gun line delivery like shakespeare and i understood every word. Kolchak had to deal police cover ups, political correction, and balled faced liars while trying to report the facts...lets not forget updike and Ms. Emily...classic opener to the series.
One of my favorite things about this show as the fact that Kolchak was just "everyman" he had no special powers or abilities, he was just an excellent character played by an excellent actor
My brother became a journalist and writer because of this show. Darren McGavin aka Kolchak was his hero. And still is.
He told me that other journalists and newspaper reporters he has met have told him that this show inspired them also to go into the news reporting profession.
Thank you Darren McGavin! R.I.P. knowing that your character inspired so many young people!
I'll never forget my mother letting me stay up late at night in 1971 to watch this movie! I really wish the studios would have given Dan Curtis the money to make this a major motion picture, yet he still did a great job. It be nice if Hollywood would try to remake this and stick to original script. Kolchak was able to let us in on his fear without all the gore and overacting. It was simple and entertaining. Thanks to Curtis & McGavin!
Good & creepy with lots of wry, subtle humor, a good dose of sarcasm, and great characters. The follow-up, "The Night Strangler", was also a terrific little movie!
My sister had a Mustang like the one in the series, and let her boyfriend drive & wreck it in a ditch! Anyway, I think Kolchak drove a Mustang-of-a-different-color in the original TV movie, didn't he?
hey this show useto scare the crap out of me when i was is kid, had to watch it, but then i had to crank the music loud to go to sleep cause i was home alone and i didnt want to hear any bumps in the night....
loved the show, got me in to the paranormal/occult. the 70's was a time of great spiritual growth and investigation fueled by kolchak and in search of and others! thanks for posting
How much do I love my Kolchak?? Alot I have all the episodes and movie and its a treat next to Millennium ( which is a very underrated show that inspired every single profiler show out Now) Kolchak is one of my favorites. I put up the Ripper, pilot episode up for everyone to enjoy. If you have a fav episode drop me message and I'll put it up. INS out (^_^)
Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files had said "I just wanted to do something as scary as I remember The Night Stalker was when I was in my teens". Darren McGavin even made guest appearances in The X-Files and his character Arthur Dales founded The X-Files.
This show had everything...Excellent actors, very well written background music, interesting action and lots of good humor sense. Fortunately It has been issued in 5 DVD package. Kolchck has survived as one of the most very original TV character thanks to Darren McGavin. Simon Oakland as Tony Vincenzo played the perfect complement to him
They had a marathon not long ago some cable channel. I watched it because nothing to watch but it was great. I loved them. Granted some better than others the vampire- monster that could turn into human forms-ship werewolf-monster that lived deep in earth were fantastic . The robot one I didnt like . Either way he was a great actor and guy who played his boss was great to .
yes that was probably it as it sounds like Sci-Fi . I didnt get to watch every single episode as saw about 8 of them but going to video store see if they have them .

@Cavillier1970 The female vampire was one of the movie vampire's victims that was missed when the authorities cremated their bodies.

@ZoneFighter1 Oh hell yeah. Anyone who followed the series and had brains could put 2 & 2 together and realize Linda was a victim of Skornazy.
