@TheAwesomeGerman1 Well, not really. Once Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, etc were gone, the heavyweight division was devoid of any real talent. The Klit Bros. are OK, but who the hell is out there for them to fight? That a 40yo man like McCall can still compete in it, only proves the deplorable state of the heavyweight division. There is still quite a bit of talent in the lower weight classes. Boxing is far from dead, yet.
Let's remember McCall Blasted Lennox Lewis with one punch, let's also remember that he has never been hurt in any fight. sparring partner for mike tyson, knocks tyson down and tyson then loses to douglas. I dont care if McCall is 50, the man has an incredible granite chin!
McCall is often overlooked when people talk about the best boxers of the 90's. Had it not been for his mental health issues he might have been up there with on a par with Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe and Tyson. In the rematch with Lewis he refused to defend himself and still took everything Lennox had. Incredible chin.
its always gifted athletes that have demons to fight with. marradona, mccall, johnny tapia, aaron pryor, the list goes on. good to see oliver getting another chance.
Don't forget former heavy weight prospect Ike Ibeabuchi. Ike admitted to start hearing voices before kidnapping his step son and crashing his car into a concrete pillar in Austin, Texas.
It's hard to tell if McCall was an underrated or overrated fighter. I think the two words that match the best to describe him is: "irregular" and "unpredictable". Still a very good fighter.
Chin like George Chuvalo, one punch power like Earnie Shavers. I think he had the stuff to be a great champion but he turned out to be a underachiever, I think he had questionable stamina and was defensive orientated in the ring.
wow, this fight is sooo fantastic!!!!! Can I say that a little bit worse then Ali vs Foreman? Or no - I'd better not, I will go and beat Diaz first ok? I'll take a photo of his scalp and publish it here - then i can say he's not the best boxer in the world? Please? Life is so beautiful. Life is great. Let's praise the Lord.
boring. McCall has never been stable and now he's old too. And before jasontreks says anything - of course I couldn't beat the bum. But I'd rather him than Haye or either klitschko or Valuev. Valuev would scare the shit out of me - imagine that bastard coming at you with violent intentions. I think I could outrun McCall, though. WBC will never give him another title fight and damn right too. 9 years ago, now? doesn't matter: he disgraced the heavyweight title, however talented he once was.
excellent -- step into the ring with him and let's make a fight out of it. At least you're willing to before you go and shoot your mouth off... sell some tickets, organize a sparring session and let us watch it on youtube.
I'm willing to fight him on a race track - my terms are a 50-50 purse and he has to wear ring boots and I'm allowed track spikes. I get a fifty yard head start and a motorbike idling in the car park with a clear run for at least two hundred yards. This promotion was brought to you by Don King.
ok, we should start saying anything about boxing. Let's stop it. The same about music - stop it. Unless you can sing better then Aqua, you have to say that their perfect, you have to get down at you knees and praise Aqua. Let's do this. You can't say anything bad about any movie - even the shittiest one - you have to get down on you knees and praise, or make a better one. Every boxer is fantastic, every movie perfect, wonderful, and every writer is marvellous. Critics shoud die. I love Diaz
ok, so you can comment only on those fighters you can beat in the ring. Or maybe you have some other rules and regulations? what if we fought with swords and hammers? if I can beat him can I say this fight is a little bit less entertaining then Ali vs Frazier I?
Umm, no, the point is if you think this guy is a bum -- then get in there with him and show us you're right. Lewis, Maskaev, Holmes, Akinwande and Sam probably wouldn't say he's a bum. They've been in the ring with him and I think know a little more about boxing than you.
I've got to admit the golden age of the heavyweight is gone now! Ali Foreman Frazier would kill any of these guys, the russian boxers ain't good enough to be champions, it makes the sport look bad!
McCall is ancient and hasn't been a leading Heavyweight for 10 years. Diaz is a nobody who got lucky against JC Gomez and has been easily bombed out by everyone else half decent.
The division is weak for sure but these 2 wouldn't last 4 rounds with Klitschko either.
I reckon Calzague'd Knock any of these muppets out and thats without putting weight on, the thing is McCall was good if he hadn't got into drugs who knows but I like to see people overcome that shit good luck to the guy! It's a achievement for that man to even be able to box,You've got to applaud someone who's doing their best to sort themselves out. God loves a trier! Who knows if he can beat that shit he can do anything as long as he's not fucked his body up to much!
Listen Calzague's 6ft, he's powerful enough to knock anyone out just because they are bigger doe's not mean they have harder heads than anyone! Besides a lot of the weight these guys are carrying is just fat! Thats what I think fucked Tyson up he was a lot fatter when he got out of jail, that made him a bit slower, less agile, less stamina longer recovery time.
Strawberryfields, you obviously know little about boxing. Whilst McCall is way past his best, he has never been knocked down in his professional career at Heavyweight. He is well known for his absolute freakish ability to absorb punishment. Calzaghe who is a bit of a slapper would not KO him.
Calzaghe is an immense fighter but 80lbs is a huge amount. He might beat McCall on points but knock him out...no chance! Lewis couldn't, Bruno couldn't etc and they punched much harder than Calzaghe.
Thats why he would always get tired before the other guy. All Lewis could do was jab, I'd have loved to have seen him fight Tyson back in the day, my original point still stands!
Finally, you seem incapable of developing a cogent/coherent argument. What has Bruno's muscles got to do with anything I said?? Back to McCall's chin. Bruno couldn't knock McCall out. Bruno's punch was scientifically measured as equivalent to a sledgehammer with 15lbs worth of padding travelling at 30mph. Thus, to say that Calzaghe would knock McCall out is far fetched! Your point does not stand.
example When tyson fought Bruno, Bruno had more over developed muscles, Tyson had less but all the muscles he had overdeveloped were for punching, tyson never had big bicepes usless for boxing. So tysons body didn't waste any energy getting blood/oxygen to usless muscles, Calzagues strength lies in the number of punches he throws not one or two biggies, thats why Holyfield was so good, more punches= better, and thats why all the guys bruno beat looked like they'd been dragged out my local boozer
As regards Tyson, you're incorrect on that point too. When he was released in 95, he weighed virtually the same amount that he did in the late 80s/early 90s. What fucked up Tyson was not weight but a combination of factors that stretched back to the late 80s. Losing his trainer, Kevin Rooney was crucial. After the split, Tyson looked for the one punch knockout, neglected his jab and combinations to the body/head etc. His destructive marriage to Robin Givens didn't help at all.
we all know Tysons past, with regard to his weight being the same I am sure he was carrying a gut after jail but to be fair he wasn't at his best for the defeat to Douglas going to tialand for I think six months of training before hand, where various people around him say all he did was sleep with Tia women. So if you want Tysons ideal weight you have to take the weight before he started losing. Jimbo you obviously you know nothing about boxing, Bruno overdeveloped muslces he didn't need.
Oh dear. Mike Tyson against Peter McNeilly weighed 220lbs (15 stone 10). Against Michael Spinks he weighed 218lbs (I've used this fight as it's considered his most destructive performance). 2lbs is nothing at this weight. His weight only increased from 2002 onwards - Lewis fight and subsequent bouts. So your point is void. Tyson's downfall was down to a myriad of factors including his lackadaisical attitude to training which I mentioned previously.
Moreover Strawberryfields, I'm well aware that Tyson was not at his best against Buster Douglas. When did I say he wasn't?! You obviously did not understand what I said at all! The rot started in the late 80s (the Douglas fight was 1990). He split from Rooney in 88, divorced Given in 88, Jimmy Jacobs died in 88 etc, King took over. All these events destabilised his life/training and had deleterious effects on his boxing ability. Weight had nothing to do with it.
With regards to Tyson (Part 2), his relationship with King was just as destructive as his marriage to Givens. The death of Jimmy Jacobs affected him greatly. He stopped training properly. His loss to Buster Douglas finally destroyed his image of invincibility (which is crucial for a bully like Tyson). Not training for 3.5 years after his incarceration further damaged him. His general lifestyle (drink, drugs, women) and his erratic training habits finally caught up with him. It was not weight.
Dude. Back in the 'Golden Age of Boxing' the Russian (Soviet) fighters weren't allowed to fight outside the Soviet Union! If back in those days the Soviet fighters would have been involved, they would have destroyed Ali, Frazier and Foreman!
