@TriGGlety1974 I am very sorry man I did not see this whole conversation until now. Please except my apoligy. I will agree it would be awesome if they started to do something different and man an internet theme for their next tour (if they decide to have one) would be pretty awesome I will admit! I really do love the ZooTV era!
@TriGGlety1974 I don't know about that. I think they're pretty productive. They've just pulled off the biggest tour in the world making 700 million dollars and having 7.1 million fans.
I can't agree with Bono's last statement about losing the Pop kids.. I don't think it was a good idea to say something so alienating... U2 fans, I find, are among the most loyal.. I imagine Bono re-thought of not playing songs from the old classic albums as he and the band definitely nowadays have these hits on their concert playlist.
Lol, it's true that they are cocks now and actually before zootv. I ain't denying it cause it's so true. But before ZooTV Bono was accused of acting like a fucking rockstar (he really did) and then he said fuck it and showed the world who a rockstar is and created the Fly and MacPhisto, also taking on rich people with MirrorBall Man. The point is that it was great making him able to say things he normally couldn't.Mocking the music indusrty and TV.But he became what he mocked
Ahh... Those were the days. This was U2 at their high water mark. I'll always love them but I won't see them live anymore. It's gotten too big and ridiculous. They need to stop hanging out out with The Black Eyed Peas and Kanye and maybe start hanging out with Massive Attack. Just an opinion
I have listened to U2 the day I was born (im 15 btw) My dad was a u2 fanatic and would always play joshua tree. When he gave me my first ipod, he filled it with all of their albums. I selected achtung baby and thought "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS SHIT". could not get into at the time but within a year, i decided to listen to it again and fell in love with it. People say joshua tree is their best album. I say Achtung Baby is the greatest album ever.
He was right that the real U2 fans were would be into it. I think the Achtung/Zooropa era was their most progressive and connected work. Too bad that they as a band decided to move away from today.
@jimmybrown11111 I hear ya, I got my ticket. But the bravity for new material isn't as strong as it used to be. Let's just say we probably won't see Passenger 2.
i think this tour pushed u2 on to be the biggest band on the planet? the re-invention of the band was incredible....zootv introduced the band to a new generation of fans...
All of U2's songs are depressing. They remind me of the Smiths. If they are really Christians, where is the joy of living. Bono is the most off-putting and depressing individual.... Their music all sounds the same.
@fastfoodclowns You can't be serious, Bono is one of the most upbeat rock singers of all time, the guy runs laps on stage, used to jump off shit, shakes the people's hands and sings to the people about beautiful, relevant things.
Try "40" for starts. Then go onto Beautiful Day, then try Where the Street have no name, oh and don't forget about I will Follow, Shadows and Tall Trees, Grace, Two Hearts Beat as One..is that enough? You need more?
What's even cooler about Bono giving the brush off to fair weather fans was that Achtung Baby went to on to become almost as successful as The Joshua Tree, albeit it took longer to get going. He joked the working title was 'Four Men Chopping Down The Joshua Tree'. I was only a kid when the tour kicked off and I can remember everyone being fascinated/baffled/confused by it. Not many bands still have that power. Apart from them.
3:32 to 3:44 says it all. As a U2-fan of over 25years, I don't expect Bono to do anything more than want he wants. As long as that is providing amazing music and a die-hard performance, that works for me.
@midgehock No not shitting you, this is far from their best album, its just pop music, no heart and soul, just them trying to refresh their image. Dont get me wrong, i love their music, but you can hardly compare any of the music on this cd to Sunday Bloody Sunday or any of their earlier stuff.
@OneMileRiot Dude are you kidding me?? Achtung Baby was THEE ground breaking album for them. If they had done another album of "standards", they would have never made it till today. Thats just a fact and there is no getting around that. For me though, ALL U2 music is "the best thing since sliced bread" lol. There is sooo much heavy stuff in that album it will make your head spin if you actually get it. The album proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were not just an 80's band. Again. Fact
@OneMileRiot Are you kidding me right now lol???? Let me break this down for you. Pop Mart: Mysterious Ways, One, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Until The End Of The World were always on the set list with an extra thrown in there here and there. Elevation Tour: Mysterious Ways One, Until The End Of The World, The Fly and a few thrown in here and there. Vertigo Tour: Mysterious Ways One, Until.., The Fly, Zoo Station! U2 360: One, Until.., Ultraviolet, Mysterious Ways. All fact.
@OneMileRiot LMFFO! Okay that was pretty funny. Yeah Zooropa probably has the fewest songs I like on any other U2 album. Still a few pretty good ones though.
@OneMileRiot uhhh you're wrong this tour was for Achtung Baby this tour started in March of 1992....Zooropa didn't come out until June of 1993 and by the time it came out U2 had already toured America twice ...by the time Zooropa came out U2 was only touring Europe and Austrailia,New Zealand and Japan
@z00h "LOL, out of 3 youtube founders one was born in Taiwan and the other in East Germany"

I wish U2 drop the old hits. Half of the set list has been the same for too long! But a lot of people still cries for the Joshua Tree U2, stuck in time... I didn't believe that in an promotional gig in radio/tv/whatever last year there was people crying for Sunday Bloody Sunday instead of the new stuff from No Line... Don't get me wrong: I love Sunday... but, c'mon! Let's get the new stuff.
Agreed tere88mt...that was hot because Bono's has always been so humble and modest, he looked the part of a rock star and actually sounded like one in this clip...I think once in a while it's cool, especially when he's right :)
Today on February 28th would have been Zoo TV's 18th birthday. '' Time is a train, makes the future the past. When we're standin' in the station, your face pressed up against the glass.''

i totally agree with those of you that thinks this was the coolest era - i mean, they were " real " rockstars here ! and i think it sucks that bono cut his hair of !
U2 need to get their edge back, they've wasted the best part of a decade trying to be hip - it has'nt worked - and they have'nt exactly done anything new since Popmart or Zoo TV...........Get on Your Boots - more like "Get off Your Boots".
The Zoo TV/Zooropa era was U2 at its coolest point. I'd have done anything to get into those shows. I like the U2 we have now. But I LOVE the U2 of back then.

They are still a great band but too worried about what everyone thinks of them. Bono needs to find the Fly again...that was the best thing he or any other rock star has ever done.
Yes they made me feel better back then. In the nineties everything was about the end of ideologies, socialism, history, everything, and they made it feel pretty exciting. They turned it into a freedom.
Seen from today it's a funny and cool show, but back then it was shocking. My first U2 show, I was 16 and felt like the interviewed girl. So much of what U2 was standing for was gone and I felt kind of betrayed. All this cynicism didn't seem like just a "phase" or joke. They really tried to actually BE cynical. And they were. Today it looks different altogether and I guess it was important for them to admit that aspect of their personalities to be expressed. Makes them even more authentic today.
I lined up all night outside the Birmingham NEC. Let me say, Well Worth IT. Amazing Tour, Amazing Show, Amazing Merchandise. THIS WAS THEIR BEST SHOW.........FANTASTIC!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That was back in the day.
Since then he's.. made songs like Stuck in a Moment. I could go on, but my point is: He's fucked up. He's sold out. He's makin' music for the retarded pop kids, and that is extremely tragic.
I love watching what was once MTV. Also, what really gives me chills is the part at the end when Kurt says that One will SOON BE released.. WOW... just thinking that ONE wasent even released yet as a single just gives me chills....man has time passed us by,
I watched this MTV clip when it first aired. I was a huge U2 fan then and now. When Bono said they didn't need the pop kids, I jumped off my couch, my hands became fists and I yelled "YEAH!!!!!" on pure instinct. This was exactly what I needed to hear from him and he delivered! Thanks Bono!
@skrason True, even though I am a fan of U2, there was a lot of arrogant stuff about them as well. You can't even it out with being into charity, though it also doesn't prevent them being a quality band, I guess it does take a bit of soul to get as big as them.
I've seen U2 9 times and the Zoo Station shows from Minneapolis and Kansas City are by far the best! Although, I was too young for War, Unforgatable Fire and Joshua Tree tours. Love this post!
I met them here in Lakeland during this week of rehearsels, and I must say they are way cool! very nice and signed anything. I remember bono came out back late one night and this man had his little son maybe 3 I would say. Bono took off his shades and let the little guy wear them the whole time he signed, and continued poseing for pic. and he has just unbelievable charisma! A class act and a true rocker!!!
No kidding. I wonder how many of the "pop kids" saw that clip and moved on. I also wonder if they were trying to lure them back with "Pop" only to give them the most commercially unviable record possible just to toy with the "pop kids"
Too bad, you have to lose that edge when trying to save the world...
zooropa the best cotton pickin show this here white man has ever been and seen amen. in roundhey park leeds england, the same park where one of the yorkshire rippers victims was found near to the pavillion. i know cos i pissed up the wall of that same pavillion after the show and some guy says to me have you no respect, i said why and he told me the story so i told him to fuck off and he did, like great.

Makes them even more authentic today.

wow... to me, a u2 fan (I was four years old back then) for about 7-8 years, Bono showed himself as a bloody twat.

That was back in the day.
Since then he's.. made songs like Stuck in a Moment. I could go on, but my point is: He's fucked up. He's sold out. He's makin' music for the retarded pop kids, and that is extremely tragic.
SimVik91 2 years ago
I don't like the song, but it is about Michael Hutchence's suicide, so I don't know how it's a retarded pop song.

"We might lose some of the pop kids, but, we don't need them."
Think about that. Bono basically tells all the fair weather fans, MILLIONS of record buyers, to go F themselves. That is the definition of BALLS.
Brilliant.
skrason 2 years ago 43
@skrason True, even though I am a fan of U2, there was a lot of arrogant stuff about them as well. You can't even it out with being into charity, though it also doesn't prevent them being a quality band, I guess it does take a bit of soul to get as big as them.

Wow... what a concert... I hope I will find some titckets for the new tour in Milan... someone knows if is difficult to find some?

Kick Ass.
He might not admit that today but the senitiment has never been more apt when your "competition" is Britney Spears.

I WANT that Arrogant BONO BACK!!!
santiago2u 3 years ago 43
No kidding. I wonder how many of the "pop kids" saw that clip and moved on. I also wonder if they were trying to lure them back with "Pop" only to give them the most commercially unviable record possible just to toy with the "pop kids"
Too bad, you have to lose that edge when trying to save the world...

actually the name pop was sacrastic.. because there isnt a single POP SONG on that album...

I think this is the best Tour in the life of U2, the songs of the Achtung Baby album are like the art... poetry.
u2zoostation 3 years ago 2
I totally agree, and this first night should be out on DVD. Even better than the real thing is played in its original tune. Real rare.

Bono was kind of a jerk back then... he would never say "pop kids... we don't need them"

But that's what I like...a rock star with some attitude and balls. It's rock n roll, not a hug fest.
