I HAVE CYMBALS FROM JERRY SHIRLY DRUMMER HE LEFT EQUIPMENT IN CLEVELAND,WHEN HE WAS DOING A DJ POSITION HERE AND WE WHERE WORKING DOWNTOWN AND CAME ACROSS THEM AND OLD PICS OF STEVE MARRIOTT AND HUMBLE PIE , A FEW OF HENDRIX AND OTHERS I HAVE TO GO THRU THEM ALOT OF STUFF.
Check out old videos of Steve Marriott when he headed up the Small Faces during the 'British Invasion' of the early '60s. Back then he was laying down the roots of hard rock that eventually made the transformation from "Itchycoo Park" to "Thirty Days in the Hole"
@webgibs I have to second that. But I also want to clarify: It's Rockin' the Fillmore. Or even more correctly, Performance / Rockin' the Fillmore. I would not want folks to get confused and miss out on one of the best live albums of my generation.
Seen them in 1971. Elvin Bishop opened for them at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, California, no chairs just standing room only bring a blanket or something I just stood.
@gearbox38 Sorry, no offense but Humble Pie formed in '68, the same year as Zeppelin. Not as popular probably, but recorded some great stuff at the same time.
This must be the first proper riff I ever learned on the guitar. I remember listening to them on my cassette walkman when I was 12. The song that follows "Stone Cold Fever" on this album is "Rolling Stone" - another hair-raising masterpiece and a great cover. I used to listen to this album like 4 or 5 times in a row... you took me way back with this man... thanks...
Great stuff on this album. Frampton's playing was jazzy and pointed me off into the jazz-rock genre after I had started out with blues rock. Of course Marriott was the total rocker with his singing, guitar and harp playing. Rock On Steve !
saw the Goodbye Pie tour through Tulsa....I feel extremely lucky to have been there watching Steve spit in air over his head. never ever forget that man
I AM LOST WITHOUT HUMBLE PIE , LOST ALL MY ALBUMS IN A DIVORCE. STILL HAVE TO REPLACE ALL ALBUMS...... BEST BAND EVER...KATHY FROM N.Y. - WENT TO ALL CONCERTS IN THE 70'
@MrSchmuchface Jesus christ dude how long do you plan on being a dick wad if your looking to piss me off than you should stop wasting your time, i would really appreciate it if we could stop this spineless arguing for once
A suggestion..............early Grand Funk Railroad live, Free, and Sweet.............great late 60's-70's bands, Sweet was more Glam and mid 70's, but have some great songs.
This was the perfect mix of Delta blues with footstomping rock ever. Just a fantastic blend of talent. Jay already knows me and my love for Steve and his many collaborators. Rock on men.
Well vocalist/guitarist Steve Marriott and vocalist/bassist Greg Ridley both died. Peter Frampton voc/guitar still has his solo career, Clem Clempson who replaced Frampton after "Performance Rockin The Fillmore", plays with his old mates in Colosseum, Jerry Shirley the drummer was in Deborah Bonham band a while ago, and he wrote a book about The Pie, and other bands that he was in. It should be released this year.
@xJayWalkerx Thank you, You seem to know quite a bit about these guys, do you know them?(did you know them?) The only bad part was I saw them at Swing auditorium in San Bernardino Ca ( a real shit hole) But they
were my favorite band at the time, I wish I remembered more of the show, but..... it was the 70s and we did some things I wouldn't do now... HAHA fun fun fun...
It doesn't get better than this........such a great era for pure Rock! Music today can't compare to the late 60's and 70's. Humble Pie, Grand Funk and Free........my Fav!
This is for Akileas: The drummer for Humble Pie was Jerry Shirley. In my opinion he is one of the most underrated drummers in Rock History. He never really received the recognistion that he should have received.
After Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabath, Humble Pie was my old time favorite pet band. Bravo Steve Marriot, Petr Frampton, and the drummer, I can't remember his name, but he was soo good.
Humble Pie shut it down back in my day. I remember initially thinking the singer, Steve Marriott, was a large black woman when I first heard him back in high school. Great stuff ~ transcends time, that Pie :)
'72 Humble Pie concert in the Sam Houston Coliseum, my husband says lets go outside for some fresh air...i trip over one of those metal things in the cement used to keep doors open...and tripped right into johnny law...no not johnny depp....and no not johnny angel...so we might or might have not picked up some second hand ghanja smoke...: )...long story we went to the slammer...the heat simply had no sense of humor back then...did they...: )
in 1970 we had a volkswagon beetle withe about a 250 watt amp hippie engineered in it ,five of us would light two or three joints and turn stone cold fever up with all the doors and windows closed and it was like sitting in ear phone I still have ear damage to this day......rest in peace Steve
Love these guys --especially Marriott - out with the harmonica and the attitude. Great stuff. Ever hear anyting like this today??? NAH. Not happenin'.
Steve Marriot Is what made this Band he wrote most all of the songs ,Great musican, and he is a great singer.P Frampton also good but not as good as Marriot
Humble Pie in the 70's! Saw them every time they came to town, at least three times. First band I took my then girlfriend too. She was blown away! Never heard such loud, nasty rocknroll! Oh yeah!
@CHEAPFK i agree, need music like theirs was, in the world today, what happened to the magic from 60s,70s rock bands? someone has to fill that void, there are a few good bands out, but not with the same feeling as the core 60s rock, not the same!
Wow! Thank you for making this vid! The photos are amazing. They really capture the energy. Decades ago when I first heard Humble Pie it changed everything. Thank you!

There was nothing that sounded anything like this song did at the time, that is for sure. And I loved all the photos you put up to go with the song. Rare Marriot and Pie pics. Coolio! Great stuff. thanks!
Yes! I've been a fan of Steve M. since the Small Faces! And I never tire of the power and deep sincerity of the man's voice! Guess I liked Small F's since I was in Jr. High. Then, comes Humble Pie- I'm blown away! Great talent from way back when!
I love music from this era, and feel sorry for lots of younger folk. They don't know this was everyday music to us. Lots of what passes as music today just ain't it! JipHop sux, to use the vernacular.
Thanks for your reply! It made me come back here to hear this song. Ohhhh the power! I agree - every other day back then you could just wander over to the record store and pick up something like this album based on the cover alone - even if you had never heard of the band before. You'd take it home, give it a spin, and be addicted to the sensation du jour, like what happened to me with these guys. I still absolutely love this - almost 40 years after I first heard it (I was 14 yrs old)!!!
Frampton MADE the Pie, with his lead work...... Maybe not his full song writing... But man... (my opinion) after Rockin the Fillmore.. the Pie lost some edge.. Frampton gone = no more milky solo's.
Could you add "Big George" and "Shine on" from the "Rock On" album to this great collection of Humble Pie songs you've started? It's just too bad that there is so little actual footage of the band available, but you've done a great job with this slide show.
@zepncat Frampton still tours. I've seen him numerous times at the Brea Summer something or other. He kills it every time. He seems like a real nice guy too.
@mrguitar52 Marriot almost joined the group that was going to become Led Zeppelin. However, someone allegedly made a threat towards Page and told him that if he went after Marriot that he would be playing guitar with broken fingers.
@carguy12345678910 They are famous in the minds of music lovers, they are just not that popular with todays music listeners, which have been made shallow by the crap that is played on radio today.
Seems like there'd be more footage of these guys from back then. They were really popular...Not like they were obscure. The only footage they ever show on t.v. is lipsynching of "Natural Born Woman."
@STPdemon Back then if you had a video camera you had about a million bucks!! and if you did have a video ,where did you save it to? I would love to go back to the late 60's and 70's to all the concerts I went to and have a picture or video of them for sure!!
Steve died in a fire in his cottage in Essex after returning from the USA where he was working on some new stuff with Pete Frampton. It was Jim Leverton and Jerry Shirley in Marriotts packet of three as can be seen on the DVD "Steve Marriott live in London" which is well worth a look. R.I.P Steve, your missed.
It was a big scandal in Cleveland about 10 or more years ago. The radio station had a food and money drive called "30 days in the hole". JS would stay at a trailer and receive donations. Some money was found to be missing.
So Much ENERGY .......coming out this skinny body ? JUST incredible .....Dude :-)

Could you add "Big George" and "Shine on" from the "Rock On" album to this great collection of Humble Pie songs you've started? It's just too bad that there is so little actual footage of the band available, but you've done a great job with this slide show.

Frampton was, and still is such an amazing and tasteful player...and Marriot is one of the best rock singers ever!

@zepncat Frampton still tours. I've seen him numerous times at the Brea Summer something or other. He kills it every time. He seems like a real nice guy too.

@zepncat Marriott was NOT one of the best rock singers ever HE WAS THE BEST EVER ROCK SINGER OF ALL TIME

@mrguitar52 Marriot almost joined the group that was going to become Led Zeppelin. However, someone allegedly made a threat towards Page and told him that if he went after Marriot that he would be playing guitar with broken fingers.

@carguy12345678910
I am now 53 years old and they were and are extremely famous.

Natural Born Boogie.

@STPdemon Back then if you had a video camera you had about a million bucks!! and if you did have a video ,where did you save it to? I would love to go back to the late 60's and 70's to all the concerts I went to and have a picture or video of them for sure!!

I TRIED TO GET IN TO SEE HUMBLE PIE THREE TIMES BUT TICKETS WERE SOLD OUT. NOW THIS IS WHEN ME AND MY WIFE (of 25 years) FIRST GOT MARRIED.

Just a great band.I bought Jerry Shirleys old Humble Pie drum kit in 1973 and used it myself for 20 years or so.

What happened to Jerry Shirley? The last I remember he was a DJ in Cleveland Ohio, ran off with some charity money.
stuka52 2 years ago
What? Where'd you hear that?
macseinchin 2 years ago
It was a big scandal in Cleveland about 10 or more years ago. The radio station had a food and money drive called "30 days in the hole". JS would stay at a trailer and receive donations. Some money was found to be missing.
