Talbot6832 you are so right....I wish we could have the 70s and 80s back, the Royal Tournament was amazing, I know I was there as a Royal Marine when they first had a laser show in 79...The other day I watched the xfactor or some such crap..it made me cringe. Makes me sad to see how Britain has fallen so far....how did we come to this...how did we come to this .
Wow... quite impressing. Those guys are like a watch. Really impressive.
P.S.: the part when the gun is moved via ropes quite dangeroues, specially when it lands. I suppose there were some serious injuries in some of these competitions.
Anybody interested and paticularly ex Field Gunners The Fleet Air Arm Field Gun Association have their own Website, just google Field Gun to find it. Pompey & Guzz sites can also be entered from here. The site shows the history of Field Gunning and there is a "Members Area" where ex's stay in touch
We used to be based next door to the Training ground for this stuff, must have watched this hundreds of time live, never fails to astound me, gonna take this to my interview as an example of "Teamwork" fantastic stuff. You can almost smell the rum and gunpowder! Bring it back!!! Not this pussy stuff you see nowadays.
Wonder how many of today's youth could manage this?
I watched the Fleet Air Arm Gunnies a lot while at Daedalus in the 80's. Saw how hard they trained (and drank!) and the batterings they took - total respect for every one of them. Watching this gave me goosepimples! Oh and they had great 'do's' in the FG mess!
@hbomb1964 I suppose its a question of these days if its too hard in the Navy no one will join, when the old days it was I want to join as it is hatrd ( to prove ones self) also the female ratings would not have to do this so then the males would say why do we have to do this kind of stuff. Something anong those lines I guess.
@dave2806 they wudnt have this anymore without a basic first aid certificate, basic hygeine test, high viz jackets, overalls and steel toe capped boots. such is the state of Britian nee Great.
i took part in a march through in the last stand royal tournament. you can buy the dvd of the final show online. not exactly sure why they stopped it maybe it was just too much extra work for the regiments involved, after all this tournament is done by real serving soldiers not civilians.
Why did they ever stop this event!! Living in Plymouth i used to watch the Field Gunners at HMS Drake in Devonport where the field gunning used to take place. Its an event of true teamwork not just brute strength. and it is a true team thing because if one person was to make a mistake then that was it for the entire crew and possibly severe injuries i.e broken bones, severed joints. Why cant they bring it back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ohh Yes!! lets see... broken ribs, legs, arms wrists, smashed feet, Oh the best ever i witnessed was a finger being chopped off, shut it in the breech. nice!!. if they could run they ran.
Yeah My rugby coach was in the devonport squad and one time he broke his back and was told he will never walk again and his friend shatered his leg in 5 place! My coach is ok now he can walk and run without pain but it took 14 years of his life to do it!
It just HAS! to be good to know you were a part of UK & RN history taking part in this event with EVERYTHING! involved in getting the teams to Earls Court. With our FU**ED-UP country and the WRONG! decisions to stop the support and funding of this event...which is internationally one of the toughest team events in history......showing the world what can be achieved with teamwork, dedication and good training.
we use both - most younger people now work in kg for most weights, but we still usually weigh ourselves in stones and pounds for some reason! same as farenheit and celcius - we use both depending on what we're talking about
Nice to see it again. Also got the total video at home, because: I WAS THERE! As one of the 18 Dutch Grenadiers ("Our allies in 1588") musician, the second group of Dutch in the history of RT. I played a xylophone-solo after the spokesman-intro. Very honoured, a life event.
Hmmmm. Instead of this fabulous spectacle of British military finesse we are subjected to utterly pathetic reality TV programmes. Welcome to 21st century Britain. Fucking sickens me to the core.
@Talbot6832 exactly.....this government i screwing up everything for our armed forces! They need support!.....The goverment can't afford to give them proper equipment now they are taking away more funding. join my FB group "Britannia Rules The Waves!....not after these defence cuts she won't!"
What great footage this is, it brought back memories of when I was in a field gun crew at HMS Ganges 1954/55. They certainly don't do this these days with the Health and Safety brigade's rules and regulations.
great to watch but can you imagine what it would be like if todays elf and safety wallahs got their hands on it? Hard hats, goggles and gloves for everyone... hearing protection for all when the thunderflash goes off and the 3 rounds are fired, safety net across the chasm..... the list is endless.
my post was meant as a throwaway comment on the state of the UK today and the crazy Health and Safety culture that rules our lives. It was made 'tongue in cheek' and was in no way a dig at Field Gunners themselves. I lived on a Service Married 'Patch' in the late 70's/early 80's and knew some of the guys that 'ran' for Devonport. I have nothing but respect for them and fully appreciate the jobs they do/did
Each running crew consists of 18 men, they all have very specialised roles (I'll try to get a more detailed answer posted soon). Three rounds are fired at the 'Enemy' at each action, so six rounds are fired by each crew during the run.
I got told about this by one of my work mates who is ex navy and he was part of Devenport and he last did it in 85, was trying to find some footage for him if you could help.
When I was young and fit I was running along the beach at Lee-on-Solent one day and was overtaken by the FAA Field Gun team - all of whom were carrying sand bags on their shoulders - and jumping the groins whilst I was on the footpath.
dont ever be led my man I can tell you as a team member for Devonport it is the toughest thing I ever did, thats why everything else in life now is a pussycat. (No 7 Flying Angel)
Great to see all these clips of the Field Gun. I lived by a RN married patch in the late 70's and one of the guys was a gunner on the Devonport team. Im not sure but i seem to recall he was maybe Captain of the team one year. All respect to field gunners, a tough sport and a great sight to see.
Yes it's a joke. But looking back wasn't it great, back then my heros as a boy, joined the RN in 96 was blessed to be picked in the fleet air arm field gun crew 1998 as a 19 yr old and loved evey minute of it, in the crew there is no rank just the innner rack as in ur number and place in the team. G.S.T.Q
My crew in 77 Mick Connolly, Izzy Ison, Big shady lane, Brum Idiens, Kitty Clayton, the swing numbers, Limber numbers, this crew set the prisidence for Devonport winning
great videos. You may be able to help. I was in the royal marine cadet band (plymouth) and played at the royal tournament in the early 80's not sure what year 80-85 I think, and I have been looking for footage for a while, can you be any assistance, many thanks, lee
