she asked him to finish her story, but he wasnt ready to let her go, hence why he couldnt understand that everyone dies and once we do, we become part of something that is eternal. once he realized that, he finshed her story, where the conquistador realizes that once he drank the sap from the tree, he reached enlightenment and realized how life and death are a circle. as she said, Death as an act of Creation
basic astrophysics! Stars die and produce all the elements we have all around us, the gold hue of the star, gold is only formed in supernovas, when our sun finally becomes a red giant, it will destroy the inner planets, and the solar winds will blow us into space to become part of the rest of the interstellar medium, and to maybe one day once again become part of another star or planet, etc. as for the past reference, she was writing a story about conquistadors, and the fountain
@B2359 Okay, Its about 3 different timelines or dimensions all about a man and his quest to either live forever or save his wife, which is a metaphor for living forever. Each timeline connects in some way. the space travellers wife is the tree, a representation of the tree of life, and when he is a doctor the cure for cancer is a sap coming from a rare tree, The idea of the tree and living forever interconnects there. Its very complicated and only appreciated if somewhat understood.
Haha this movie is totaly a concept of Buddhism not to put any religious into it. But check out his full lotus meditation nicely done. The ideas is that life and death is one in the same. One which give life also bring death. The ideas of the tree of life and loves/soulmate is an illusion bound the consciousness through attachment and clinging. By simply accept death and let go is the way to be free from our attachment to materialistic. which changing depart us all from one another.
I wish the ending where he goes in the dying star was real the fact that he would be able to dedicate the rest of his life to taking his wife to place where souls are reborn now that's love beyond measure. Love like I doubt anyone on Youtube will ever know. But who knows there might be still hope for us all.
These are past lives.... ones that you live time and time again as the same soul but as a different person in a different time. The end is of a male of unknown patronage who speaks english, as an astronaut in the future.. trying to digress between universes & conflicting with a time conundrum that allows him to reflect on past lives.. prior to expiring in the collapse of the universe... only to be born once again....and again for eternity..
The only thing I was missing about the link between the two stories (Thomas and Tom) with the reality (Tommy) was that Tommy wrote the entire future section, hence the tree representing Izzy (because he plants the seed at her grave BEFORE writing the last chapter), the ring tattoo, ect cet...and that he actually wrote the ending to Izzie's conquestadore section of the story, hence the appearance of his future self to the mayan priest. Beautifully written story.
That's not really him...that's the ending to the story he finished for Izzy. The spanish Thomas drinks from the tree of life and, just as with the first father, his body, arms, and legs become one with the earth...but his head (consciousness) travels to the underworld (the star), finishing the last chapter of the book. It's all a reflection of the real life Tommy realizing that he cannot change death, it is "the road to awe," and the only way him and Izzy can be together again.
@GuyFawkes501 Tecxhnically, yeah, in the bubble story...but the dying star he was traveling to was the mayan underworld Xibalba, where souls go to be reborn. The tree he had with him was a representation of Izzy, and when he arrived, the tree was resurrected. Then, it cuts back to real life, where an apparition of Izzy hands Tommy a seed from the newly reborn tree, which he then plants at her grave...aludding to the story that she told him while she was still alive, that her soul will
become part of the new tree...where a bird may eat a piece of fruit from it and she will forever soar with the birds. Most of this stuff is allegorical and symbolic. Point is, he accepts his and her fate in reality and moves on.
@SavingEverySecond you have earned the awesomeness badge for explaining this so well, let alone within a day of me requesting an explanation. I will now subscribe.
Why thank you sir. Feel free to comment on some of my orchestral or rock compositions, if you would like. Constructive criticism is very welcome. Btw, love the name. I'm a huge fan of VfV and a supporter of Anonymous...whichever it stems from, I'm with ya.
nope. there's 3 stories. the spanish search for the tree of life is the end to the story he finished for izzy. the other 2 stories are reality. he had found the 'tree of life' while izzy was alive, after she died he planted a seed at her grave. 'death is a disease and I will find a cure'. he used the tree, and did. the bubble is him in the future, after living a long life, he had the tree he planted at her grave brought with him to xibalba, to be reborn with her.
Of course this is open to interpretation (Ebert didn't even know what to really make of it), but your version seems to make sense too...just b/c of that, I have to rewatch the movie, lol. Thanks and I'll get back to you on that.
I don't think it's open to interpretation at all. this is what the movie meant to convey. there's plenty of clues. notice his tattoo's? those are his years, like the rings on a tree. he talks to the tree like it's her, because to him she's apart of the tree since she was buried under it. its not to say he used the tree to cure death for only himself, but for everyone. the bubble he is in is future technology. there's plenty more clues. all the visions of her arent real.
@peoplez129 Thank you so much! This is the best explanation I've seen for The Fountain, and I fully agree with you that it isn't an interpretative movie; it's just very hard to understand unless one really thinks that way or has seen it many times. However, while the events of the movie are relatively concrete, that doesn't mean certain things like the bubble and especially Tomas in Izzy's book finding the tree couldn't be totally allegorical.
from 6:21 - the most epic movie scene ever made. its just truly amazing, the music combined with those special effects.. incredible! it gives me chills everytime i watch it.
Fuck al those critics bashing this movie because they said it didn't make sense and that it struggles with it's own metafysics. You have to see this movie with an open mind, clear your thoughts and let this movie's beauty stroll in. This movie made me a fan of Darren Arronofsky and of Jackman again because I didn't like him in the beginning but now, sheesh. And fuck the Acadamy for not recognising a good film, personally I think this was way better than the Hurt Locker. Just sayin'
@n8goesSPLAT But he didn't return to this planet, he went right into a sun :). Also alot of the things we shoot up in space doesn't return to the planet. But I hear you man, I loved this movie thought I don't agree with your conclusion that the movie is an illustration of something so obvious.
The story about Spain was Izzy's book, it didn't actually happen. The story about the space monk is purely symbolic, it ultimately represents Tom's acceptance of the inevitability of death. The present-day story is the only story line that I believe is meant to be taken literally, the rest is a story about love and death. All of these elements start to bleed together in a confusing way towards the end of the movie, showing Tom's struggle. At least, that's my take! I love this movie!
I see that the story in space and the story of spain are in the book that izzy was writing. the story it is through the search for his "fountain" of youth, one that cannot be obtained that we see him finish the stories and come to the conclusion that we all die. even to give life to the tree of life we still must know death.
I will repeat again as I have said many times, the plot of this film is irrevocably jumbled up in a tirade of biblical references, that results in a plot that makes little sense.
this scene has got to be the most epic, most supernatural, most mysterious, most mystical, most holy, most divine scene in any movie todate. i love. The bible tells us to set our minds on that which is above and not on earth, but becuase we still reach for worldy pleasures, we find ourselves in competition with one another it causes bad results. but to set your goals on something heavenly can only be given by GOD and doesnt restrict one to better then another, thus there is no looser. harmony
Adam and Eve used to ate from the tree of life and enjoying eternal life. When they ate the fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge because of Lucifer's trick, human beings are banished from heaven and started to experience the life as we all experience it now, which is life and death...
I still don't quite understand this movie lol. In this scene, does Tom climbing up the tree and leaving the bubble means that he accepts death and is willing to join the dying nebula and die together? And because of his acceptance of death leads him reaching immortality hence the tree reborns and flourishes again? But I thought the tree is the tree that Tom planted on Izzi's grave and so is a representation of Izzi? What does the tree being reborn mean and what does the queen of spain mean?
@Pricture: If you had a WILL to die before hand then I think something was wrong there. >.> And the world isn't a hell hole, people just like to make it that way.
@wildthing1982: This movie wasn't about rebirth. Rebirth is selfish. It was about giving your body and creating new life, and living on as one forever. Wanting to be reborn in another body again is the most selfish thing you could ever ask for, and this movie touches on that. Only by giving back to what gave to you can you truly live forever, while the world is still reborn a new. Besides, this world is heaven and hell. A no more beautiful place exists.
This film is art and deals with real topics in a very abstract way! Mainly it's spiritual, but it also deals with the fragility of our mortality as human beings, the frustration of keeping ourselves alive and the stress we must deal with during loss and acceptance.
And to think, this BEAUTIFUL masterpiece did not get enough attention because audiences prefer dellusional vampire romances
@roloug95 that's not the point, why were you obliged to come back? Was there some sort of internet dignity you had to uphold coming back to a video you didn't want to see? Did your balls grow any bigger? Did you grow any balls as a matter of fact?!
@JoeTedz alright now what the fuck are you talking about? why were you obliged to reply to a four month old spammed comment? and then expect me to ignore it?
@roloug95 Yes. Yes I did. Replying to this comment only makes me realize how stupid you are, so i'm going to put this to sleep, recuperate, and ignore you. Well, that was fun!
HEEEELP! does anybody know the name of the song that starts at 7:50 in the very, very end? it's not part of "death is the road to awe" and i always need to listen to it through the last part of this video... :(
When the past-Tom stabs the tree and drinks its sap, we hear a sigh as if it was an old man in pain. As he looks up, the tree's dying bard transforms into the dying Xibalba. According to the myth, the First Father's body became the tree and his head became Xibalba – I think the reason Xibalba is a dying star is becuse past-Tom mortally wounded the tree in his quest for the immortality it offered. By sacrificing his immortality and reuniting the tree with the star, future-Tom redeemed himself.
@SPRLDR Hey, that is a cool interpretation! If conquistador Tom mortally wounded the Tree in a past life or an alternate universe or what-have you, that helps tie the three story lines together. The Tree was obviously badly injued and we don't know if past-Tom died because of the transgression or simply because he didn't understand what "together we will live forever" meant.
Who talking about being reborn, Id mush rather not die in the first place, and i vow to find a means to exist forever, and if the fountain or tree of life is out there ill find it, if anyone wants to join me, they are welcome. PS. If we do find it we probily wont tell anyone.
one more thing, what's the song in the last 2 mins of this clip when everything goes black and then bursts back with bright lights and he appears to be burning up and precipitating onto the bubble? What's the song that bursts in for that moment? I've been hearing it on the current Molson commercial with the old renaissance ship.
I never caught on to any of the things you guys have pointed out about the movie thanks, it helps make a little if any sense of this movie. I own it, I really liked the music but I still to this day have never understood the point or message of this movie...
@MaxJigga My professor of philosophy says it's not enough to watch it only once. And you need a basic knowledge of mysticism (at least) before you start watching this movie. So don't worry if you didn't understand the message. Greetings from Poland:-)
@AspenTrees78 The transparent cell in "The Fountain" seemed to be structured by the idea of a Jungian E Edinger: Ego-Self-Axis: (see my channel for link)
This idea is fascinating in combination with a scientist who's specialized in researching biological cells...
Only Aronofsky made it a "near death experience" on a Mayan Ladder instead of.. Jacobs.
believe it or not but a gieco commercial lead me to this.first i saw the commercial and it had a song i liked so i typed it in and one of the song from the artist had a part of this video as a music video and then i liked asked what the name of the movie was called and i saw this movie :)
this movie taught me that dying is not a bad thing, that its just an experience like life is . im not trying to start debates but my belief in religion is gone ,i look at it as i do mythology(which it is) heaven for eternity just sounds plain boring . its okay not to know what happens after life. And that love is the best thing life has to offer. Love lasts for an eternity . Being human is to live and die not to last forever (immortal) , the tree sap scene
This movie is beautiful. We certainly need more movies that make you actually THINK instead of movies that have no plot but instead have big breasted blonds bouncing around the screen for an hour and a half.
I never thought of a literal time travel plot in this movie at all, the mayan plot was just the book Izzy wrote and the bubble scenes were Toms dreams in his deathbed many years later and his redemption/liberation when accepting his own death and the knowledge that no one ever really dies. My point of view.
I consider myself an expert in recognizing brillant films, but it pains me that I missed this movie of the past couple of years. Great score by Mansell, amazing acting, and a great plot. A rare combination today.
it's a great movie, cannot deny it.. but.. who wants 2b reborn in this world again? me not. I would prefer being reborn diffently and elsewhere than here.. maybe it's heaven? Dispite these thoughts.. very good film, cried too.. it's liek someone opened your eyes. It "went under radar" because people are spoilt with all these stupid blockbusters that just shall let us forget what life means. With exaggerated stunts and special effects.. lol.. well.. Aldous Huyley's brave new world says "hello"
@axaristh1453 r u kidding me??? u don't know ANYthing about me.. but say so. !
Nope, i have alreeady thought about death, my own life and all this stuff, i do think about death too much.. but: I do not like THIS World.. but rather live with "my God". i am christian and not Buddist or anything like that and do not believe in this stuff.. That's the point behind my comment!! by the way, ameliorate your English please, it's not a pleasure reading it..
@wildthing1982 the point of reincarnation is to grow, to learn until you dont have to be reincarnated here again. think of earth as a school, if you learn enough you will graduate, if not then you have to repeat grade 12 over until you get it. this is my take on it. And after earth maybe there is college and after that "the real world" :-)
@wildthing1982 I would be reborn, same or different in nature, in this universe a million times over.. I mean that honestly and sincerely.. I would live the lives of everyone whose ever lived and who could ever be.. It would be cool to be born in a different environment tho.. scifi? :)
I don't know if I would like to live forever.. I also don't know if I will ever live again.. But I think the point of this movie was to see the beauty and creation in death and enjoy our lives in the face of it
@wildthing1982 Very well said an true, we are born here to experience that pain, love, joy, hate, fear, pain and pleasure in a five sense dynamic because these are things we don't experience on a spiritual level. That is what I choose to believe.
People do not appreciate such films anymore. It's a shame. This films is one of the best films ever made. However, most of the people do not what life is and what it means to be a human being, anymore--that is the main reason why this film 'went under the radar'. It is such a beautiful film.
I can see meat debate going on, my opinion is that humans have been given free will, will that can surpass the rules of nature and a will that can either create or destroy. We choose to kill for our own greedy satisfaction, you speak of the need to supply food but in a society that wastes life for pleasure your words mean nothing. Stop killing to satisfy your hunger. Eat to live only, not to please your ego that craves. Become enlightened, see the light and let go of your cravings.
i think two things were stated in this scene. it's ok to let go, cuase when you do you find that you weren't holding on, you were held. the second thing is that death is somting we all sould accept, it's not just a fact, it's a promise.
Can it be? Can death be salvation? Can we faith away in eternity? I hope so! I hope that someday "Plato´s Cave" will burst and will not hold back anyone anymore! Humanity should demand it! The philospher´s stone... we should demand it!!! But can we???
@SchmidtSmith its very curious how they based the meaning of the movie in mayans understanding of truth..mayans stated trough their calendar which purpose is to understand the meaning and the timing of the galactic cycles, and that the galaxy(or universe)is one huge organism with its own conciouness just like any form of life and we are like "cells" to that organism just like cells are to our physical body, and our porpose is to..>>
understand the truth..the how what and why of creation..mere CONCIOUSNESS but to crate conciousness we have to be aware of it and either way trough out negative or positive experiences(We choose)we create more conciousness that is the purpose of God of us of creation, the understanding of itself, pure love..as in the movie "death is the road to awe"is only a tranformation of the soul to another physical from to keep scaling the process of spiritual evolution to higher levels of understanding
ok my opinion is less dificult i think people or ment to live in nature nature is what life is all about the emotion of being in the wild nature gives you the spiritual feel the need for love, freedom, no stress, nothing bad at all just you and the others enjoing life our world is no longer what faith had planned no lets put it this way we messed up faith, faith is ment to be bound nature, exploring, hunting i mean every person has the erge to explore things instead of our mind
exactly more accurate u cant be...in essence as humans we are part of that nature and I don't see anything wrong with modernism or human societies if it weren't 'cuz it blind us away from truth somehow, contaminates the air we breath the water we drink, poisons peoples minds selling them a life is not suppose to be that way,and its pretty evil when it comes to other species that we torture just for profits(food)
.Exactly, there is a huge difference in between going and get ur own food (yourself) or haunt ur own food, there have to be a meaning behind that, yes is part of nature...and something very different is go to supermarket or mcdonalds and get whatever or everything we need, there is no meaning behind that, no purpose besides that is misleading our perception of reality or truth, like if our consciousness is fucked up we cant even tell whats right or wrong anymore!!
@SchmidtSmith those arent my words that is pure mayan wisdom...it is not about believing but understanding, I don pretend to sound like having all the answers but if there werent an afterlife or the eternity of the soul, the mere purpose of the whole existance or creation would be pointless, why would creation invest all its wisdom in You Me and everything around with the porpuse to love(conciousness)to just give up all those experiences when each of us die???that is impossible yet cruel
Hugh Jackman totally blew me away with his acting. He could teach Sam Worthington, Shia Lebouf and all these others a thing or two. I liked him in Australia et al, but the sexiest man alive was really impressive in this one. First class.
I don't understand why the movie went right under the radar! It's highly philosophical, it has significance, morality and other aspects that only fit under mysticism. It's not you typical shoot 'em up blockbuster....is it because people don't like to ponder on these kind of things?
Anyways, I have dissected the movie dozens of times and every time I reach a different meaning. Amazing.
@MegaKurono that's exactly why it went under the radar... unfortunately the public can't stand an open-meaning ending... it just don't tolerate anything that can make someone think about something after the movie...
The tree of life give's Tom not only a reason a purpose in life, but it sustains his soul. He cannot live without the tree, when he excepts death, he sacrifices him self so the tree can be replenished. In man's search throughout time, we have always struggled with our own mortality, in this we must find peace or tear ourselves apart in grief.
Great ending but I don't understand the part where the Mayan shaman strikes him with the fiery sword. He becomes a transcendent being but then turns back into the ambitious conquistador. Can someone elaborate?

n8goesSPLAT 9 months ago

I love this movie!
lumberjackinabag 10 months ago
I see that the story in space and the story of spain are in the book that izzy was writing. the story it is through the search for his "fountain" of youth, one that cannot be obtained that we see him finish the stories and come to the conclusion that we all die. even to give life to the tree of life we still must know death.
punk1attitude 10 months ago
I will repeat again as I have said many times, the plot of this film is irrevocably jumbled up in a tirade of biblical references, that results in a plot that makes little sense.
Identityis 10 months ago
this scene has got to be the most epic, most supernatural, most mysterious, most mystical, most holy, most divine scene in any movie todate.

When they ate the fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge because of Lucifer's trick, human beings are banished from heaven and started to experience the life as we all experience it now, which is life and death...
ilkoltulu 10 months ago
I still don't quite understand this movie lol. In this scene, does Tom climbing up the tree and leaving the bubble means that he accepts death and is willing to join the dying nebula and die together? And because of his acceptance of death leads him reaching immortality hence the tree reborns and flourishes again? But I thought the tree is the tree that Tom planted on Izzi's grave and so is a representation of Izzi? What does the tree being reborn mean and what does the queen of spain mean?

SPRLDR 1 year ago
@SPRLDR Hey, that is a cool interpretation! If conquistador Tom mortally wounded the Tree in a past life or an alternate universe or what-have you, that helps tie the three story lines together. The Tree was obviously badly injued and we don't know if past-Tom died because of the transgression or simply because he didn't understand what "together we will live forever" meant.
ijwi 7 months ago
Who talking about being reborn, Id mush rather not die in the first place, and i vow to find a means to exist forever, and if the fountain or tree of life is out there ill find it, if anyone wants to join me, they are welcome. PS. If we do find it we probily wont tell anyone.

Hi MaxJigga, the name of song: "Death is road to awe"
And in the movie, the protector of Maya temple said to Spanish soldier who come to discover tree of life.
rslylmz 1 year ago 7
one more thing, what's the song in the last 2 mins of this clip when everything goes black and then bursts back with bright lights and he appears to be burning up and precipitating onto the bubble?

Jacobs.

this movie taught me that dying is not a bad thing, that its just an experience like life is . im not trying to start debates but my belief in religion is gone ,i look at it as i do mythology(which it is) heaven for eternity just sounds plain boring . its okay not to know what happens after life. And that love is the best thing life has to offer. Love lasts for an eternity . Being human is to live and die not to last forever (immortal) , the tree sap scene

I never thought of a literal time travel plot in this movie at all, the mayan plot was just the book Izzy wrote and the bubble scenes were Toms dreams in his deathbed many years later and his redemption/liberation when accepting his own death and the knowledge that no one ever really dies. My point of view.

Your sickness is within you, though you do not realize
And your cure is within, yet you do not see
You claim that you are nothing but a tiny entity
Yet wrapped up inside of you is the greatest universe
You are the clear book, through whose letters
All that is secret is revealed and made known.
So you have no need for anything outside of you
Your consciousness is within you, though you do not know

But I think the point of this movie was to see the beauty and creation in death and enjoy our lives in the face of it
SHIBBYiPANDA 1 year ago

@SchmidtSmith its very curious how they based the meaning of the movie in mayans understanding of truth..mayans stated trough their calendar which purpose is to understand the meaning and the timing of the galactic cycles, and that the galaxy(or universe)is one huge organism with its own conciouness just like any form of life and we are like "cells" to that organism just like cells are to our physical body, and our porpose is to..>>
bienvivo 2 years ago
understand the truth..the how what and why of creation..mere CONCIOUSNESS but to crate conciousness we have to be aware of it and either way trough out negative or positive experiences(We choose)we create more conciousness that is the purpose of God of us of creation, the understanding of itself, pure love..as in the movie "death is the road to awe"is only a tranformation of the soul to another physical from to keep scaling the process of spiritual evolution to higher levels of understanding
bienvivo 2 years ago
hardcorethesky 1 year ago
exactly more accurate u cant be...in essence as humans we are part of that nature and I don't see anything wrong with modernism or human societies if it weren't 'cuz it blind us away from truth somehow, contaminates the air we breath the water we drink, poisons peoples minds selling them a life is not suppose to be that way,and its pretty evil when it comes to other species that we torture just for profits(food)
bienvivo 1 year ago
wel were not torturing them
we need them, we need food.
Yea we can survive with fruit and vegeatables.
But if your all alone in the wild?
The only thing i can think off is killing something for food.
That"s part of life.
hardcorethesky 1 year ago
.Exactly, there is a huge difference in between going and get ur own food (yourself) or haunt ur own food, there have to be a meaning behind that, yes is part of nature...and something very different is go to supermarket or mcdonalds and get whatever or everything we need, there is no meaning behind that, no purpose besides that is misleading our perception of reality or truth, like if our consciousness is fucked up we cant even tell whats right or wrong anymore!!
bienvivo 1 year ago
@SchmidtSmith those arent my words that is pure mayan wisdom...it is not about believing but understanding, I don pretend to sound like having all the answers but if there werent an afterlife or the eternity of the soul, the mere purpose of the whole existance or creation would be pointless, why would creation invest all its wisdom in You Me and everything around with the porpuse to love(conciousness)to just give up all those experiences when each of us die???that is impossible yet cruel

I don't understand why the movie went right under the radar! It's highly philosophical, it has significance, morality and other aspects that only fit under mysticism. It's not you typical shoot 'em up blockbuster....is it because people don't like to ponder on these kind of things?

The tree of life give's Tom not only a reason a purpose in life, but it sustains his soul. He cannot live without the tree, when he excepts death, he sacrifices him self so the tree can be replenished. In man's search throughout time, we have always struggled with our own mortality, in this we must find peace or tear ourselves apart in grief.
