Opera isn't about high notes; Opera is about conveying an emotion or feeling with your singing. For me, Callas did this exactly. She touches my soul - the same cannot be said for Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, etc.
At last, almost 35 years after her premature death, Maria Callas is recognised as the greatest soprano of the last century. To those few people who seem unwilling to accept this and make the ridiculous claim that her top notes 'screech', I recommend that you listen to her in any French opera, which for me she sings with even more beauty than she brings to the Italian repertoire.
a facebook post of a 16 year old about how God hates her because she dosen't have the new iphone isn't allowed to be disliked, but this,an angelic performace,is. purely retarded
@romaitalia29 I wouldn't laugh too much at Callas she does her best , but that she is not in the artistic league of Sayao is unfortuntate, having heard both live . Callas knew how to milk

@dziady Well as a Psychiatrist perhaps I know better than most.
You call it screaming, I call it sublime. Just by looking at the like/dislike bar it transpires far more people agree with me! Nobody cares about you or Sayao, certainly not people like me who were born AFTER the demise of the greatest soprano La Callas, she transcends genre and generations.
@romaitalia29 Are you really a psychiatrist and because of that you know better ???? We haven't stopped laughing !!!!!! thank heavens you were born after she was dead
heavens only knows how you would have reacted to her if you were born while she

@dziady1 Oh how I would have been honoured and loved to be alive when she was, I would have practically worshipped Maria Callas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a Psychiatrist for sure, it was meant in irony that earlier reference, perhaps beyond your intellectual grasp I suspect. Do you speak Italian? If so I refute you with even more ease.
The emotion! The conviction behind what she is singing! And her voice! All together is one of the best performances I've seen of this piece. Just amazing.
I can't stand people gossiping about onassis and her, it was their fucking business and there are loads of things we common people dont know nothing about.
Classical Music is officially, now my passion... I thought it was before, but i hadn't heard Maria Callas so it couldn't possibly have been... Move over Renee Fleming! wait... Renee Who? :D
@NewComposer01 It's not a competition. Sure, nobody can match Callas artistry, but opera is meant to be enjoyed live - as a theatrical performance, with sets, costumes, story, in an opera theater where you can hear these great voices unamplified. No recording of past greats can ever replace the experience of a live opera and the beauty of unamplified voice. Callas is dead, live and opera goes on. As someone said "live is short, opera is long".
@jewelmarkess Speaking as somebody born a few years AFTER Callas had physically died, Callas is not dead!!!... her passion, talent and uniqueness is eternal. The sopranos of today fade to nothing in comparison. Why does a 50 year old recording ( with inferior technology) of Callas have greater impact upon me than the modern live performances you refer to, I have seen quite a few?! Callas has made this grown man cry like a baby, I am not ashamed to admit.
@romaitalia29 Callas singing in operas, especially in roles of dramatic tragic heroines, has a tremendous impact on me as well, she draws me in. I can also understand how she can have greater impact on you than other singers. But you are still going to operas, right? What I have problems is that people get fixated on only listening to Callas and not even thinking of listening to others or going to opera. This is bad for opera, and it also robs these fans from experiencing live opera
@jewelmarkess Yes I agree completely, I do still go to live operas, just Callas has set the standard so high... how much I envy the people who saw her live, what a legend she is!! I am also sure Callas would want opera to live on.
@ConcertoInEminor Let's not be too judgmental here... He was the most powerful Greek man in the world, and his ego was quite high. He couldn't resist marrying up lil' American widow, who compared to Callas was nearly nothing but her slain husband's wife. Marrying Callas would have been too much for his ego. Not to mention, before he died, he and Maria had gotten back together, and he had begun divorce proceedings against Jackie probably in order to marry Maria.
@mesutrrose Au Contraire! Albeit, perhaps not in the context of your discussion with ConcertoinEminor; Love has EVERYTHING to do with justice. How could LOVE stand idly by and allow any injustice? That would be the very opposite of love. Love protects and endures.
@YahMyRefuge Indeed, Love is a different level of existence. Our average values can't be applied to it, like justice, egalite, fraternite, liberte,... it offers more real connection with the truth above our average mind, knowledge, judgement. So Callas' performance is unique.
MARIA me embrujan tus interpretaciones...si asi cantabas en la tierra, no puedo siquiera imaginar como lo haras en el cielo....CASTA DIVA PER SEMPRE......

vivelhistoire, TOSCA!! That was one of Maria's greatest triumphs and it's all about love and sacrifice... I can't wait to read your novel once it is published!!
We are blessed to have such a wealth of beautiful music and a vast of number of simply supurb singers, Maria Callas Joan Hammond and today Anna Trenebko amongst many others irrespective of your own personnal preference are we not lucky to be able to listen to so many
I'm a 15 year old aspiring opera singer and I LOVE Maria Callas. She is such an inspiration to me... PLEASE CHECK OUT MY CHANNEL, I would appreciate it very much. THANKS <3
I know it may be a little out of subject but I need some advice here: I'm writing a novel and there is a scene where two characters listen to a recording of an opera with Maria Callas and begin to fall in love with each other. Now it can't be La Traviata because that one will play a different role in the novel, but what suggestions could you have? I need something romantic, an opera about love, that Maria would have fully recorded (for the sake of accuracy). Thank you so much in advance! <3 <3
@vivelhistoire How about the love duet from "Lucia di Lammermoor"? The duet itself is very romantic and lovely, and the opera was one that Callas sang often on stage (45 times). She recorded it twice for EMI.
Mrs. Callas was the Artist with the capital A. Her voice yearns so huge that it almost makes one agonized. She was also more the nervy type. For many it made her to a more dimensional artist. Those people do probably like Callas's voice better.
Anna Netrebko has a flow in his voice that is even better than Maria Callas.
Her voice does not encounter any obstacles. It just flows in a sensual way wish is so appealing for many. Anna Netrebko has a more enjoyable way of life. If you find that appealing, you probably also do like Anna Netrebko best.
@brightspark495 As somebody recently pointed out, in the character it is a youthful woman pleading with her father with hope and optimism to have permission to date a handsome man, it is meant to be excitable and fast. It is the accurate artistry which makes Maria Callas the giant of opera, even today more than 30 yrs since her death, she is simply unmatched!! - Though if you prefer a slower version, it is your choice of course!
@romaitalia29 I think O Mio Babbino Caro has a sad tune so to me the melody would suit a slower tempo something like Rita Streich or Angela Gheorghiu... Sissel for example sang it fantastically as well..
@brightspark495 You name some great performers, especially Angela Gherghiu! However you cannot change the context of an aria within an opera simply because one 'thinks' it has a sad tune or not.
Maria Callas perfected the artistry and emotion within the correct context unlike others. She was truly divine, La Divina!! Speaking as an Italian I can inform you her pronunciation is perfect also.
Sorry if my English is not perfect, it is my third language but I think I have the basics conveyed.
@romaitalia29 Hope and optimism can also be articulated with a slower, composed delivery. I know Maria Callas is a great singer, one of the best and everybody knows. But I just feel a slower tempo suits the tune better. Thats all.
Maria Callas is a legend she is Amazing. The world needs another Maria Callas and i find a girl who can be (maybe) because she sings so beautifull her name is Naomi Montero and she sings O mio babbino caro and Time to say goodbye and maybe she will be in Vegas in a Show. I dont know her but i want it. And maria o My God Maria Callas is Maria Callas
ha ha - Even mentioning the greatest soprano of all time, Madame Callas in the same sentence as Anna Netrebko has made my day!!!! With all due respect to Anna, there is simply no comparison.
@qantasCapt Madame Callas made remarks appreciative of Tebaldi, and vice versa - the supposed feud was a publicity stunt. Tebaldi once said to Francis Robinson of The Met, "Why didn't you tell me Maria was the best?"... I rest my case!
I've just come to realize the Callas had the interpretation of the character and Montserrat had the voice. and Puccini wasted a gorgeous melody on a pissy little spoilt brat. A waste of a great melody. lol lol
Bravo! Maria Callas Diva. If you want to know the next Maria Callas go Naomi Montero O mio babbino caro and Time to say goodbye this little girs is beatiful and sings like an angel
Wow! Gorgeous! Those who say this piece is sung too fast are incorrect...She is a young woman singing of her hopes and fears, of course she would express her thoughts quickly...the modern singers of this piece do so too slowly as if the character had lost all hope...Callas is the master of this piece...what a voice!
Omg this is amazing. This is REAL music. This reminds me of family, heritage. This was society 60 years ago. She was our symbol of music some time ago. It's sad that Lady Gaga is now an icon of music.
Maria Callas embodied - as in past tense - opera, in its prime, that was. Today, it's as if opera had also gone down her grave. This song strikes me, in present tense, like Maria Callas is pleading for opera to be back to what it once was in its heydays. Or opera will never be the same again without this woman.
This is simply enchanting. When you hear and watch Callas sing this, you are not simply watching another soprano recital. You are listening to a beautiful and vulnerable young woman plead desperately with her father to permit her to marry the man she loves. That is what set Callas apart.
Love this, what an amazing voice.

she would never sacrifice musicality in order to "show off". that's why no singer will ever be like her.

vivelhistoire 5 months ago
@vivelhistoire If the novel has a tragic ending with the two characters, I guess you could use "Carmen". :) Hope that helps.

@vivelhistoire Madame Butterfly and the song "One Fine Day." It's beautiful. It reduces me to tears... Fyi I'm fifteen :L

@vivelhistoire How about the love duet from "Lucia di Lammermoor"? The duet itself is very romantic and lovely, and the opera was one that Callas sang often on stage (45 times). She recorded it twice for EMI.

(Callas vs Netrebko I)
Mrs. Callas was the Artist with the capital A. Her voice yearns so huge that it almost makes one agonized. She was also more the nervy type. For many it made her to a more dimensional artist. Those people do probably like Callas's voice better.

(Callas vs Netrebko II)
Anna Netrebko has a flow in his voice that is even better than Maria Callas.
Her voice does not encounter any obstacles. It just flows in a sensual way wish is so appealing for many. Anna Netrebko has a more enjoyable way of life. If you find that appealing, you probably also do like Anna Netrebko best.
ForAll23 5 months ago
@ForAll23 Her voice may not encounter any obstacles, but her technique is certainly does! Even the simplest coloratura is a great challenge for her.

Callas has put in more feelings than tebaldi, but has not gone higher than her. Both have done a great work of art.

this one is so fast.. i prefer it slower...
brightspark495 5 months ago
@brightspark495 As somebody recently pointed out, in the character it is a youthful woman pleading with her father with hope and optimism to have permission to date a handsome man, it is meant to be excitable and fast. It is the accurate artistry which makes Maria Callas the giant of opera, even today more than 30 yrs since her death, she is simply unmatched!! - Though if you prefer a slower version, it is your choice of course!
romaitalia29 5 months ago
@romaitalia29 I think O Mio Babbino Caro has a sad tune so to me the melody would suit a slower tempo something like Rita Streich or Angela Gheorghiu... Sissel for example sang it fantastically as well..
brightspark495 5 months ago
@brightspark495 You name some great performers, especially Angela Gherghiu! However you cannot change the context of an aria within an opera simply because one 'thinks' it has a sad tune or not.
Maria Callas perfected the artistry and emotion within the correct context unlike others. She was truly divine, La Divina!! Speaking as an Italian I can inform you her pronunciation is perfect also.
Sorry if my English is not perfect, it is my third language but I think I have the basics conveyed.
romaitalia29 5 months ago

@tigre294 - If you like Maria Callas, then have a listen to Anna Netrebko singing 'O Mio Babbino Caro' - it should make your day.

ha ha - Even mentioning the greatest soprano of all time, Madame Callas in the same sentence as Anna Netrebko has made my day!!!! With all due respect to Anna, there is simply no comparison.

@romaitalia29 - So sorry you didn't like Anna Netrebko singing 'O Mio Babbino Caro'. I'd like to hear your opinion of Renata Tebaldi.
qantasCapt 5 months ago
@qantasCapt Madame Callas made remarks appreciative of Tebaldi, and vice versa - the supposed feud was a publicity stunt. Tebaldi once said to Francis Robinson of The Met, "Why didn't you tell me Maria was the best?"... I rest my case!
Take care.

Andromedagrecia 5 months ago
Wow! Gorgeous! Those who say this piece is sung too fast are incorrect...She is a young woman singing of her hopes and fears, of course she would express her thoughts quickly...the modern singers of this piece do so too slowly as if the character had lost all hope...Callas is the master of this piece...what a voice!

THE MASTER OF INTERPRETATION
RomaShop1 6 months ago
This is simply enchanting. When you hear and watch Callas sing this, you are not simply watching another soprano recital. You are listening to a beautiful and vulnerable young woman plead desperately with her father to permit her to marry the man she loves. That is what set Callas apart.
