  • Love this, what an amazing voice.

  • Opera isn't about high notes; Opera is about conveying an emotion or feeling with your singing. For me, Callas did this exactly. She touches my soul - the same cannot be said for Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, etc.

  • At last, almost 35 years after her premature death, Maria Callas is recognised as the greatest soprano of the last century. To those few people who seem unwilling to accept this and make the ridiculous claim that her top notes 'screech', I recommend that you listen to her in any French opera, which for me she sings with even more beauty than she brings to the Italian repertoire.

  • Anyone that dislikes this has no soul.

  • La belleza existe.

  • "As férias de Mr. Bean"

  • @MultiVinicius1984 kkkkkkkk é mesmo! Só lembro da cena, foi uma mistura de emoção com humor fantástica! Bem lembrado...

  • I have heard sutherland, tekanawa and many o thers not to menttion Tebaldi and she is it

  • Angelic voice ...makes me cry ...

  • A 46 personas le gusta Justin Bieber... Bravo Maria Bravo!!!:)

  • a facebook post of a 16 year old about how God hates her because she dosen't have the new iphone isn't allowed to be disliked, but this,an angelic performace,is. purely retarded

  • what a beautiful version of this song,

  • so lovely

  • Precioso!!!!!!

  • Sayao could give Callas a lesson or two in the art of singing this aria

  • @dziady1 That is absolutely hysterical! Thanks for laugh.

  • @romaitalia29 I wouldn't laugh too much at Callas she does her best , but that she is not in the artistic league of Sayao is unfortuntate, having heard both live . Callas knew how to milk

    the ignorant crowd , Sayao didn't .

  • @dziady1 Nobody would laugh at Callas unless insane. She is still at pinnacle of operatic excellence. Now go away and stop trolling, if you like Sayao so much go to her videos, she could do with a few more fans. Bless her.

  • @romaitalia29 Didn't know Callas was used as a clinical standard of insanity -as for

being at pinnacle - I thought she was dead and had stopped screaming at her pinnacle.

  • @dziady Well as a Psychiatrist perhaps I know better than most.

You call it screaming, I call it sublime. Just by looking at the like/dislike bar it transpires far more people agree with me! Nobody cares about you or Sayao, certainly not people like me who were born AFTER the demise of the greatest soprano La Callas, she transcends genre and generations.

  • @romaitalia29 Are you really a psychiatrist and because of that you know better ???? We haven't stopped laughing !!!!!! thank heavens you were born after she was dead

heavens only knows how you would have reacted to her if you were born while she

was still screaming her top notes .................

  • @dziady1 Oh how I would have been honoured and loved to be alive when she was, I would have practically worshipped Maria Callas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a Psychiatrist for sure, it was meant in irony that earlier reference, perhaps beyond your intellectual grasp I suspect. Do you speak Italian? If so I refute you with even more ease.

  • @romaitalia29 The thought comes to mind that perhaps you should see s psychiatrist ....

  • @romaitalia29 Take it easy fratello, some people are not born to enjoy music like that but get jealous when we could...derealization perhaps...

    a Medical student

  • @LKW1994 I quite agree with that possibility, though was also thinking along the lines of a P.D. (Narcissistic type perhaps).

    Good luck in your studies!

  • really wish i could of sang classicals beside her

  • Magnífico! *_*

  • grande :D quanto ho cercato sta canzone

  • How the Body from Spirit does slowly unwind, until we are pure spirit at the end.

  • Sublime. The greatest soprano ever.

Oh Youtube please remove the dislike button from this video, it is criminal.

  • @romaitalia29 agree ...but I think some evil people do it deliberately...just to spoil the joy...ignore them.

  • GTA 3

  • Thank you very much indeed for posting this.

  • Beyond perfection. Sublime.

  • This song always reminds me of mafia :D

  • Callas and Puccini = perfection <3

  • this song is sexist by the way, but I do love it.

  • Just Beautiful !

  • Simply beautiful and moving !!! Thanks for posting

  • goosebumbs

  • this is just...amazing. absolutely incredible

  • penelope markatos h kaluterh apo oles

  • The emotion! The conviction behind what she is singing! And her voice! All together is one of the best performances I've seen of this piece. Just amazing.

  • Ślicznie !

  • one of thee best ever!!!!

  • @deaconmm1 Not one of the best..... THE BEST!!!!

  • There seem to be little blips.

  • Amo a Maria Callas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \o/

  • Schade daß Maestro Puccini die Lauretta von Maria Callas nicht hören konnte!!!

Er wäre sicher genau so gerührt und bewegt wie wir gewesen!!!! Brava Maria !

  • I can't stand people gossiping about onassis and her, it was their fucking business and there are loads of things we common people dont know nothing about.

  • Sweet childhood! Thank you niss26an50

  • I agree, a soul, with a voice. Total passion and commitment, in a moment of time. What more can an artist give?

  • BRAVO!!!

  • thumbs up if mr beans brought u here

  • :')

  • Her legacy forever lives

  • Classical Music is officially, now my passion... I thought it was before, but i hadn't heard Maria Callas so it couldn't possibly have been... Move over Renee Fleming! wait... Renee Who? :D

  • @NewComposer01 It's not a competition. Sure, nobody can match Callas artistry, but opera is meant to be enjoyed live - as a theatrical performance, with sets, costumes, story, in an opera theater where you can hear these great voices unamplified. No recording of past greats can ever replace the experience of a live opera and the beauty of unamplified voice. Callas is dead, live and opera goes on. As someone said "live is short, opera is long".

  • @jewelmarkess Speaking as somebody born a few years AFTER Callas had physically died, Callas is not dead!!!... her passion, talent and uniqueness is eternal. The sopranos of today fade to nothing in comparison. Why does a 50 year old recording ( with inferior technology) of Callas have greater impact upon me than the modern live performances you refer to, I have seen quite a few?! Callas has made this grown man cry like a baby, I am not ashamed to admit.

  • @romaitalia29 Callas singing in operas, especially in roles of dramatic tragic heroines, has a tremendous impact on me as well, she draws me in. I can also understand how she can have greater impact on you than other singers. But you are still going to operas, right? What I have problems is that people get fixated on only listening to Callas and not even thinking of listening to others or going to opera. This is bad for opera, and it also robs these fans from experiencing live opera

  • @jewelmarkess Yes I agree completely, I do still go to live operas, just Callas has set the standard so high... how much I envy the people who saw her live, what a legend she is!! I am also sure Callas would want opera to live on.

    Thank you for your reply.

  • Maria Callas is one of my favorite singers! She sings anything so well! Liz

  • LONG LIVE GTA 3!!!!!!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL! that is all. thank you.

  • lol this made me cry :(

  • GTA III brought me here.

  • @Meyus007 Don't listen to atMaxims

Without gta3, i never would had find this beautifull song

  • @ahmedelfak Right, my friend. I love this music and game. Respect to legends.

  • Maria Callas: Beautiful performances,The Best singing DIVA. Unforgetable divine voice of Maria Callas la grande lady....

  • Unbelievable Voice and so soft on those hugh notes! For sure the best performance of this song!

  • Onassis didn't deserve her.

  • @ConcertoInEminor Let's not be too judgmental here... He was the most powerful Greek man in the world, and his ego was quite high. He couldn't resist marrying up lil' American widow, who compared to Callas was nearly nothing but her slain husband's wife. Marrying Callas would have been too much for his ego. Not to mention, before he died, he and Maria had gotten back together, and he had begun divorce proceedings against Jackie probably in order to marry Maria.

  • @ConcertoInEminor who the hell would deserve her??

  • @ConcertoInEminor Who's Onassis? All I know is she was 'deeply' in love with him? Love can be deadly too

  • @ConcertoInEminor Love has nothing to do with justice.

  • @mesutrrose Au Contraire! Albeit, perhaps not in the context of your discussion with ConcertoinEminor; Love has EVERYTHING to do with justice. How could LOVE stand idly by and allow any injustice? That would be the very opposite of love. Love protects and endures.

  • @YahMyRefuge Indeed, Love is a different level of existence. Our average values can't be applied to it, like justice, egalite, fraternite, liberte,... it offers more real connection with the truth above our average mind, knowledge, judgement. So Callas' performance is unique.

  • what ones hears in heaven....

  • simplesmente magnifico

  • divina!

  • Pra sempre Senna :,(

  • @gateontheroom E 'questo commento da un cinque anni?

  • @romaitalia29 Nao entendi. Portugues ou ingles pra ficar mais facil para os 2, por favor.

  • maria callas - the greatest soprano ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maria Callas and Angela Gheorghiu are THE BEST soprans ;) !!!

  • MARIA me embrujan tus interpretaciones...si asi cantabas en la tierra, no puedo siquiera imaginar como lo haras en el cielo....CASTA DIVA PER SEMPRE......

  • She has no feeling like Fleming =/

  • @oNoRoDrIgO You have a good sense of humour, nice one.

NOBODY has as much feeling and passion as Madame Callas. LA DIVINA!!!

  • @SenseAndSpite Got anything better to do other than insult great legends? How about you go check out this dramatic soprano's past and think before you say anything. I doubt you can sing anything close to this, let alone major in vocal performance or major in music all together. Go find something productive to do with your time, because insulting someone who isn't even alive is definitely worth while. Now go away before I report you for trolling.

  • Definitely a better version than the other video in color.

  • @xXoleXxoleXx Who devil is that Neterbko?

  • a soul with a voice - this is Callas

  • view editorial - Good Evening Grandpa on website durbanvillequick.info on ladies singing this hauntingly beautiful song Wim

  • @mtlhoma You mean a voice with soul?

  • @gregbboy619 I think they meant her voice is so pure it is like her soul is singing

  • I mean senseandspite. I am Sorry Xxxole. ;)

  • Ashamed. What a lack of culture We have here. Talking about miserable people in front of such queen Callas and Passionate, sweet and deep Puccini's emotions. Let's respect these genious. Even In Brazil, In My poor culture reality, I know How to recognize a real soprano. Go chase urself, xanaxxxala wherever

  • @paulamorais1989 Agreements and greetings from Brasil. ;)

  • @xXoleXxoleXx Neterbko's FART sounds better than this HORRID rendition of Callas's.

  • @SenseAndSpite

I totally disagree, yes her voice is more controlled, yet it doesnt have nearly as much passion as Callas, and emotion. Music is nothing without emotion.

  • @ndolder93 and I completely agree with you!!

I struggle to even put Netrebko in the same sentence as the great Callas, Callas will always be light years ahead... in everyway, as you say especially passion. If I want a sugary sweet voice I would listen to a Disney soundtrack!! lol :))

BTW senseandspite is well known troll with numerous i.d.s who wants to provoke for attention, it is kind of sad actually...

  • What is wrong with you? Neterbko's nowhere near being compared to Callas...@SenseAndSpite

  • @SenseAndSpite Your consderation is very vulgar

  • @SenseAndSpite

Your way of speaking is very very very vulgar

  • One of my regrets is never having the privilege of hearing her sing live.

  • super woman

  • It was very well interpreted~! =)

  • such an angelic voice!!I am proud to be Greek like her :)

  • heaven on earth,rest in peace,princess

  • Purity of emotion; true feeling simply stated. Callas shows real knowledge of the heart, something that is not found in the over-thought, over-rehearsed, over-expressed versions by lesser artists. This has me in tears.

  • anielski głos

  • Maria siempre erizando la piel con su voz

  • Kiri certainly owns it. But goodness gracious! The only thing I don't want to hear Callas singing is Norma (and that's towards the end, when her voice was breaking). Besides that, she could be singing the Spongebob song and it would sound like heaven. Bravissima!

  • Kiri Te Kanawa owns this one.

  • @Fuliginosus Absolutely!

  • @Fuliginosus Maybe, in your little world.

  • @SenseAndSpite Then why click on a Callas video? To attention seek like a troll?, just a suggestion :)))

  • Comment removed

  • @romaitalia29 To educate POOR, BENIGHTED SOULS like you :)

  • @SenseAndSpite Keep your education, your opinion counts for nothing. Compare likes to dislikes in all of Callas' videos - and note the highest view counts amongst sopranos, your in a poor pathetic minority.... AND always will be. I think half of the dislikes were people so emotional their tears of joy blurred their vision so they pressed wrong button :)))))

  • @romaitalia29 If my opinion counts for nothing, then why in the world are you in such a dither to refute it? (wink)

  • @SenseAndSpite Because you are so easy to refute. I will say this once only, the soprano you like, we both know who she is, will never ever ever surpass Callas, in any measure. DEAL WITH IT!!!

  • Amazing. 2:05 minutes in Heaven and then... back to earth.

  • she would never sacrifice musicality in order to "show off". that's why no singer will ever be like her.

  • No one sang the word "pietà" with such feeling... ever...

  • Straight to my heart, every time... I want to cry with and like her, rest in peace dear Maria Callas...

  • Потрясающий голос, как хрусталь))))

  • vivelhistoire, TOSCA!! That was one of Maria's greatest triumphs and it's all about love and sacrifice... I can't wait to read your novel once it is published!!

  • The artistry of the young Maria Callas is a once in a century phenomenon. This is simply sublime.

  • perfect...i extremely loving this aria..

  • beautiful

  • Se mi babbino Caro :D

  • simplemente genial

  • Brava

  • We are blessed to have such a wealth of beautiful music and a vast of number of simply supurb singers, Maria Callas Joan Hammond and today Anna Trenebko amongst many others irrespective of your own personnal preference are we not lucky to be able to listen to so many

  • I know it may be a little out of subject but I need some advice here: I'm writing a novel and there is a scene where two characters listen to a recording of an opera with Maria Callas and begin to fall in love with each other. Now it can't be La Traviata because that one will play a different role in the novel, but what suggestions could you have? I need something romantic, an opera about love, that Maria would have fully recorded (for the sake of accuracy). Thank you so much in advance! <3 <3

  • @vivelhistoire If the novel has a tragic ending with the two characters, I guess you could use "Carmen". :) Hope that helps.

  • @vivelhistoire Madame Butterfly and the song "One Fine Day." It's beautiful. It reduces me to tears... Fyi I'm fifteen :L

  • @vivelhistoire How about the love duet from "Lucia di Lammermoor"? The duet itself is very romantic and lovely, and the opera was one that Callas sang often on stage (45 times). She recorded it twice for EMI.

  • She was the best.

  • Not her number.

  • I love this woman!!! not a day when i can resist to watch this video again.

They do not make them like this anymore, speaking as somebody born AFTER Maria Callas sad death... brava! la divina! soprano supreme!

  • (Callas vs Netrebko I)

Mrs. Callas was the Artist with the capital A. Her voice yearns so huge that it almost makes one agonized. She was also more the nervy type. For many it made her to a more dimensional artist. Those people do probably like Callas's voice better.

  • @ForAll23 Her voice may not encounter any obstacles, but her technique is certainly does! Even the simplest coloratura is a great challenge for her.

  • @MadonnaImperia

No obstacles.., something that I have written about?

  • The Caruso of sopranos. So beautiful.

  • Callas has put in more feelings than tebaldi, but has not gone higher than her. Both have done a great work of art.

  • this one is so fast.. i prefer it slower...

  • @brightspark495 As somebody recently pointed out, in the character it is a youthful woman pleading with her father with hope and optimism to have permission to date a handsome man, it is meant to be excitable and fast. It is the accurate artistry which makes Maria Callas the giant of opera, even today more than 30 yrs since her death, she is simply unmatched!! - Though if you prefer a slower version, it is your choice of course!

  • @romaitalia29 I think O Mio Babbino Caro has a sad tune so to me the melody would suit a slower tempo something like Rita Streich or Angela Gheorghiu... Sissel for example sang it fantastically as well..

  • @brightspark495 You name some great performers, especially Angela Gherghiu! However you cannot change the context of an aria within an opera simply because one 'thinks' it has a sad tune or not.

Maria Callas perfected the artistry and emotion within the correct context unlike others. She was truly divine, La Divina!! Speaking as an Italian I can inform you her pronunciation is perfect also.

Sorry if my English is not perfect, it is my third language but I think I have the basics conveyed.

  • @romaitalia29 Hope and optimism can also be articulated with a slower, composed delivery. I know Maria Callas is a great singer, one of the best and everybody knows. But I just feel a slower tempo suits the tune better. Thats all.

  • Maria Callas is a legend she is Amazing. The world needs another Maria Callas and i find a girl who can be (maybe) because she sings so beautifull her name is Naomi Montero and she sings O mio babbino caro and Time to say goodbye and maybe she will be in Vegas in a Show. I dont know her but i want it. And maria o My God Maria Callas is Maria Callas

  • @tigre294 - If you like Maria Callas, then have a listen to Anna Netrebko singing 'O Mio Babbino Caro' - it should make your day.

  • @qantasCapt

ha ha - Even mentioning the greatest soprano of all time, Madame Callas in the same sentence as Anna Netrebko has made my day!!!! With all due respect to Anna, there is simply no comparison.

  • @romaitalia29 - So sorry you didn't like Anna Netrebko singing 'O Mio Babbino Caro'. I'd like to hear your opinion of Renata Tebaldi.

  • @qantasCapt Madame Callas made remarks appreciative of Tebaldi, and vice versa - the supposed feud was a publicity stunt. Tebaldi once said to Francis Robinson of The Met, "Why didn't you tell me Maria was the best?"... I rest my case!

    Take care.

  • I've just come to realize the Callas had the interpretation of the character and Montserrat had the voice. and Puccini wasted a gorgeous melody on a pissy little spoilt brat. A waste of a great melody. lol lol

  • Bravo! Maria Callas Diva. If you want to know the next Maria Callas go Naomi Montero O mio babbino caro and Time to say goodbye this little girs is beatiful and sings like an angel

  • Wow! Gorgeous! Those who say this piece is sung too fast are incorrect...She is a young woman singing of her hopes and fears, of course she would express her thoughts quickly...the modern singers of this piece do so too slowly as if the character had lost all hope...Callas is the master of this piece...what a voice!

  • Nossa isso é muito quente, penetra a alma e nos conduz ao inconciênte coletivo do ser humano...

  • Omg this is amazing. This is REAL music. This reminds me of family, heritage. This was society 60 years ago. She was our symbol of music some time ago. It's sad that Lady Gaga is now an icon of music.

  • yes, I agree - but not on montserrat caballe as the best - sorry

watch Anna Netrebko by PARANOIDANDROID69 - I think it's stunning

  • too fast and tinny

    montserrat caballe is the best

  • Maria Callas embodied - as in past tense - opera, in its prime, that was. Today, it's as if opera had also gone down her grave. This song strikes me, in present tense, like Maria Callas is pleading for opera to be back to what it once was in its heydays. Or opera will never be the same again without this woman.

  • perfection

  • THE MASTER OF INTERPRETATION

  • This is simply enchanting. When you hear and watch Callas sing this, you are not simply watching another soprano recital. You are listening to a beautiful and vulnerable young woman plead desperately with her father to permit her to marry the man she loves. That is what set Callas apart.

  • Un angelo......
