I respect Carnies and the Carnival World.Carnivals have been a fascination of mine ever since I was 4 years old. I can still remember the days when I would force my parents to drive me to the local Carnival so I can watch the rides and lights go around so that I could get to sleep at night.I had a dream of owning my own Carnival someday and that dream came true in miniature rides which is less expensive than high overhead so the dream has come true. I am a true Carnival Fan!!!
i just want to tell all those on here who write negative things about carnies GO FUCK YOURSELF i am a carny and we work very hard so you assholes can have a fucking fair to go to most of you people who write that shit wouldn't last 5 minutes in this business cause most of you have probably been baby'd your hole life or your just a stuck up preppy person i do this cause i love it by the way thank you for your money we really appreciate it
I love the way you people make all these awful comments about the hard working people you created... thats right they were your friends family and neighbors before they worked at the carnival. The same idiots making the comments are the same people that come out to the fair and spend hundreds.
I am the guy in the dunk tank in this doc.
We love you and your money so please keep comming out and dont forget your wallet, because we dont take checks from PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
I just finished watching this and this is a grim, depressing little film from beginning to end. They could have taken a less predictable route by steering away from the stereotypical carny types, but no, they went for the jugular and showed us toothless, tattoo covered, depressing, poor, miserable people. If that's what society already thinks about carnies, then this film has not shed any new light on the subject. See the film if you want to feel depressed.
It's captivating and horrifying at the same time. These people live in shit conditions and work on salary which means that divided by the number of hours they work, they only earn maybe $2 an hour! I will never look at a traveling carnival the same.
My sentiments exactly. I spent four months with a Carnival last year. One week I calculated I worked 105 hrs. At $400 bucks a week, that's around $3.80 an hour. About four degrees shy of slavery. But, some people Love it. God Bless em.
I just watched this movie. I want to hear the songs that were on the soundtrack. Does anyone know? I saw "Overcast", "Permanent Midnight" and "I'm on Fire" at the end of the movie. If anyone knows the bands that played the music, I'd be super grateful.
Ya, hiring that homeless guy (probably your forgotten 3rd cousin) is very wise: the absolutely cheapest labour, and always available, and it preserves the carnie stereo type and thereby distracting you from seeing all the tax free oats we're swingin' with
nature of carnivals, even the tiny show - 10 rides, 10 joints - quickly has a million dollars to stuff under the mattress or bury in the backyard. Labour laws? Name 1 other business in N. America that (when warranted) still beats their employees? .
iIllusions; we need to continue perpetuating their belief in the media caricatures (or stereo-types) of those of us in the outdoor amusement business. Lets continue to take their disposable relatives and put them out-front, (i.e., Ride boys) grossly underpaid and overworked, while those of us above them or in the office sit back and count the scratch. Immune to 95% of all local and federal tax laws due to the nomadic, transitory
I work on a carnival and I can really relate to this documentary. It's very well done, definately a good watch. It's a dangerous job, lots of hard work, but the people you meet and the experiences you have can't be beaten.. =)
what makes u think carnies are scum..thats bs..im 22,hot and made 400 dolllars a week traveling with the carnival...it was badass..we go all over the states and stay in vegas.. u probably look at someone working a ride and think that poor bastard but really they have like 10 grand cash in their rv..and party it in every city they go to...and think shame what a loser spending their friday nights at a carnival..ahahaha go to hell ;)
Exactly. I knew a guy became a carny because he wanted to send his daughter to college only problem was his wife threw him out and he couldn't get a job so he joined a carnival and sends most of his money to his kid. Some people may think they're scum but don't judge carnies because some of them became carnies for a noble cause and they had no other way.
It can be a very dangerous job too, I'm speaking from personal experience- I have a family member that has had a very bad experience while working for a carnival. :(
I have met the guy at the beginning, hes really sweet, and I have met a few others through a friend of mine who has worked there the last few years. It really is a hard and lonely job sometimes. Not all fun and games like it seems.
read Don't laugh at this! Carnies aren't scum. They are like any other group, a diverse people that have the proverbial "good AND bad", mostly decent.
Leave 'em alone.
