what happened was, and i read straight out of erics autobiogrophy, that eric took his son Conor to a fair the previous night, and was going to take him to the circus the next day. on his way over to pick him up, Conors mother called him and was franticaly screaming that Conor was dead... he fell out while playing hide and seek, and the window was open because they had a guy come in to clean it.

Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven".. I really love this song.. It cheers me up when I listen to it or play it after a hard day...
