Well he is in good hands with Jody. By the way according to the BU archives Poole did not write The Baltimore Fire, he found it in a song book at a recording session in 29 when the Ramblers were desperate for material. He may have copyrighted it though. One of the reasons I have always admired Grisman is that he has a penchant to reach back for material that might have fallen through the cracks.

Charlie Poole was from North Carolina (as am I) and was leader of the North Carolina Ramblers until his death at age 39 in 1931, most likely of alcoholism (details are murky), he popularized many songs that went on to be bluegrass standards, "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and "White House Blues" to name two. A 3 disc set is available, "You Ain't Talking to Me: Charlie Poole and the Roots of Country".

I was once in a folky group that performed a version of Washington Blues. I tend to put in more clever lyrics when I perform songs which is anathema to most but hey.....So much unknown and unknown to me great old music out of North Carolina, and the deep South. Thanks for the tip, I remember David crediting Charlie Poole with authorship at least once....there's a great historian along with Jody Stecher who's taken young Chad Manning under his wing and when were gone Chad will be passin it on!

Thanks, I'll be checking out Charlie Poole because this is one of my favorite songs. Keith tells the story on stage that David (Grisman) found this song and thought it fit him, and he says, it does! Came closer on the other version of this posted here which is by Keith and Jim Nunally!
