@BreezyBrisbane Wow, you just don't know this is an earthquake that killed over 6000 people. I would like to see you get hit in a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and then you will see how it feels.
I think the reason why Japan gets hit so hard is because the type of ground the cities are sitting on, siesmic waves travel much more fluidly through softer ground than solid
@Chammy92243 all the regions where they get earthquakes more often is because of the type of earth''les plaque'' like if you would live in canada we rarely get earthquakes and the highest i think was 6
The P wave is almost like an announcement that the ground is about the shake very very soon.
It sometimes sound like a elongated "boom" or roar that vibrates the ground a bit, followed by the much stronger S wave that rocks everything back and forth or up and down.
Amen, I live near San Andreas, I remmeber the quakes back in the late 80's , 90's when I was a kid how I thought it was a jet plane but the sound came from the ground. Then now with all the quakes coming from the geothermals its like you hear what you think is a semi passing near by followed by the vibration then a quick jolt.
Lol i noticed something funny, the cash register closed itself whle the money coulda just flew all over xD the guy didnt close it when he felt the P wave o.o xD!!! i woulda lcosed it and hung on for cover. i hate picking stuff up ;o
This is an awesome video - can I ask where you got it? You are the only person that has the video of this store before the earthquake strikes. Its crazy how the men sense something is wrong seconds before the real shaking begins. Must have been the initial up and down S waves that lightly rattled everything.
the S wave was the violent shaking, they felt the P wave first shaking their bodys up and down initially sensing something is wrong and sub conciously hung on for cover, then the S wave came and violently shook, Take note on the cart, It's going up which means the fault / Epicenter is that direction of them.
nope. it wasnt that high - 6.9 on richer scale, 316000 homeless people, that clips kinda funny tho - id luv to be standing in a field when it happened XD
Just to clarify - the richter scale is no longer used. The earthquake was a 7.2 or 7.3 or the moment magnitude scale - the new richter scale. Not only that, it was a very shallow focus earthquake and its epicenter was 8 miles from downtown Kobe, which is why the ground shaking is so severe.
really, i heard it was a 7.2 but the difference on casualties in this earthquake and the 1994 northridge which was about the same on the richter scale (6.7) is just amazing

@Chammy92243 More fluidly? Please explain? Usually waves travel faster and easier in hard materials.
ClemyNX 7 months ago
@Chammy92243 Japan gets hit so hard because three "boundaries" around the area. when the they move in a conservative way, earthquakes occur.

um ya it is however they don't use it as often. now they use the Merchalli scale which measures damage

The Kobe earthquake was a big one. It killed 6,600 people, injured 47,000 and left at least 2 million homeless and measured 7.3 on the richter scale.
