  • i had learnt this song word for word b4 my 10th birthday..... my oldman is a massive jam fan and seen them live tons of times. id kill for the chance to see them myself..:(

  • Fantastic to see these Jam vids some 30-4 years later. Still have all the LPs.. Remembering a gig in 1981. Great time. Greetings from Denmark

  • Just sublime...

  • one of the best songs ever written ! fair play to the jam and weller they did some excellent tracks

  • THIS SONG IS THE BOLLOCKS

  • This song is actually about a racist attack on the tube.

At the very start you can hear the " N " word shouted and later the references about " Right wing meetings ".

You have to remember how things were back then.

The NF were supposedly about to become britains second biggest party.

    Then along came Maggie.........

  • @Tejpo63 No, not exactly a racist attack...NF thugs would target anyone perceived to be different. The colour of one's skin was a primary factor, though not the prevailing one. The lyrics here reflect the sentiments (and sometimes fear) of many a person back then, including myself. The song stands the test of time, and is as relevant now, maybe more so, as it was back in the late 70's. But I'm intrigued at your hearing the word nigger in the introduction... Where exactly?

  • God London was beautiful back then..!! ^^

  • @supermacedonianking LOL! Did you live in 'beautiful' London 'back then' ...... ;-O)

  • i absolutely loved this song ever since day one , still do , back then i lived in my native Leeds aged 22 , i now live and work in this fabulous big city and i love the tube late at night , there is such an intense electric quality in the atmosphere that cant be found anywhere else (beats the New York Subway hands down for it ) you can sometimes cut it with a knife , illustrated perfectly by the sublime Paul Weller who for my money never quite surpassed this period in his career .

  • Blonde RocknRoll, totally totally couldnt agree more

  • great song. It is happening all over again.

  • love the thames opening..great tune!

  • i <3 this song words cant say

  • this band was the stuff back in the day, and their music has stood the test of time..still love it all, very powerfull ..thanks for posting this

  • ..the wine will be flat and the currys gone cold...the wine wont be flat and in some ways the curry cant be cold.20 minutes in the oven will sort it anyway, whinging weller

  • @notmename11 you cannot re-heat chicken or meat otherwise you get food poisoning :L

  • @BRADSTER54321 its a fair cop,i stand corrected.but the wine wont be flat, corked maybe..."the wine will be corked and the currys gone manky"

  • @notmename11 I'll go with that! Great song anyway!

  • Great job you did with the video. I rember buying this in early 80 releases when I was about 10 or 11. I first played it around my grandads house and he said he liked it.

  • absolute genius

  • i was 13 in 1983 when i first heard this and by then the jam were done- but ive seen weller in the states 4 times since 1992- hes my musical hero- one of the best songwriters in uk history and the Jam were simply top class-

  • the jam were the very first famous band i ever saw and it was 1 of the defining experiences of my life- the energy and power and pasion of their music and lyrics were incredible, just out of this world! ive seen many great bands since but that gig is up their and i'll probably be rambling on about it when im a little old lady in a nursing home!lollol!wonderful!

  • Remember hearing this song for the first time down in the tube station at midnight wow what a song. Weller where have you gone ?

Get of the train man !

  • Quite simply......the music of my youth. I and many like me were lucky lads, to grow up and listen to this angry young man and his outlook on 70 and 80s Britain made me the man I'm today. But I dont think he has done anything decent since heavy soul. We all know you are a smoothy Paul, but be real cool and do 1 Jam tour. If all the shite of yesteryear can reform then why not one of Britains finest bands. Go on !!!!!!!

  • wow, still sounds good after all these years. we are the mods.

  • my favorite bass line from the punk/new wave era. powerful lyrics. u can feel the tension

  • Real quality - aided by the contemporary shots of the tube - neon lighting and passengers with big shirt collars !

!959 tube stock for the spotters - probably the Northern or Bakerloo lines !

  • Bloody awesome. Saw them 4 times as the Jam last time was @ Guildford civic Hall

    Good Days

  • this is one of the best songs ever recorded.. The Jam at their best ... bloody wonderful ..

  • super morceau! après avoir découvert "going underground" je suis ravi!

  • My favorite!! Thank you for the brilliant post.

  • Quality !

  • Paul is very very sexy and still is. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Just Brilliant!!! Thankyou for posting 5* and fav

  • oh quality.. i learnt this song word by word, a much younger girl...lol but i still sing it now, after a few.. great post..as always..
