I was raised catholic and I think that what all of those names were referring to was purgatory. Where you go to carry out your punishment for sin and once it's complete you're supposed to go to heaven
@clandestine919 Purgatory is a later concept developed by the Catholic Church, which has been downplayed since the middle ages. It's not in scripture, so I think the only way you can believe that is through projection of your beliefs onto the text. The Old Testament never speaks of anyone leaving Sheol to continue on to paradise or hell.
I'm not sure if you excluded it or not on purpose, and if you did my apologies, but why not add The Divine Comedy, as this is the book that this gives us the description of Hell most Christians are familiar with today? Or does this have nothing to do with what you were trying to get across, as it was written between 1208 and 1321?
@HimesInu Yeah, this video is about where the New Testament concept of Hell comes from, not necessarily how our modern view of it has been influenced. Dante's Inferno was definitely a big part of our modern view, though, I agree.
In the bible according to Xena (heh), Tartarus (emphasis on the first syllable) is the opposite of the Elysian Fields, and is ruled over BY Hades, the lord of the underworld. I prefer Xena's bible over the JC Bible. Besides, she's way hot. :D
The lake of fire is a place where one is purified...Rather than an angry God who is punishing his creation by burning them eternally in a pit of fire, God purifies the spirit by fire symbolically...Do LSD and concentrate on this concept and you'll see what I mean...God loves his children, all of them, everyone will eventually be won over by God' love, and repent of their wrong doings...God purifies us by fire...there is no Hell, as popularly conceived.....slip that hit under your tongue now...
@robinxyz101 Lol, and there's no better way to learn about reality then by taking mind-altering drugs. Hell is a figment of your imagination, LSD-induced or not.
Hel (hell) is where u went after death in the viking myths. Religion, religious/political leaders is total corrupted. They change the original texts to "fit" in to the old pagan belief systems. Thats why easter, xmas and other "Christian" traditions is celebrated, and there is no big deal to find out about the lies, the hard nut is to find out where`s the truth... vid`s i good, but not great. :)
This is probably your best video so far. Hell is a question I get asked many times over as a christian. It is very unclear where the bible says we actually go when we die but if you think hell is hard to understand try doing a word study on heaven ha best of luck.
I think they might have gotten Hell from Zoroastrianism, which describes a fiery pit for bad people. As well as the idea of a "bad god vs good god" .....Satan.
The Satan of Judaism is an angel employed by god to tempt and give a person the opportunity to choose right and wrong. Not a "fallen angel."
In the old testament god created life and death. In the new testament the son of god , Jesus created hell. To a loving god death was not sufficient it would allow a person to escape further persecution and that was not satisfactory. It only stands to reason to punish man for his mistakes.
Love this series. I've given up debating the facts with Christians... they always trump me by sticking their fingers in their ears and asserting "Can't hear you, la la la la la!!!"
Well there wasn't untill about the macebee invasion and babylon, when the apocalyptic writing began and started to deal with life after death. Most likly influenced by zoralasterisim.
@otach1 I think the question is did Judaism teach the heaven/hell concepts of the NT, and the answer is absolutely 'not'. Samuel was seen as "a god coming from the ground" -- hardly the picture of heaven but traditionally akin to the concept of 'sheol'. As a student of Hebrew you should know that 'sheol' was not just the pit or the grave but "the hole of rest" for the soul. Samuel complains about being disturbed. The Jews thought of death as sleep and def. did not have a concept of hell.
I've read of Sheol, a place were souls wait and are divided by virtue and merit as Enoch stated.
But aside from that the Jews I've heard and talked to seem to have a unitarian philosophy, that most if not all souls will be with God sooner or later.
Yes, that's true. Some Christians also believe that Hell will be more of a purifying place though, that you'll suffer in for a while, but then ultimately be able to enter God's presence. Kind of takes away the threat of eternal damnation, but I don't think most intelligent people ever considered that a legitimate threat to begin with.
I think what you are talking about THERE is "purgatory" not hell. It was explained to me as kind of like a waiting room, if you were good enough for heaven but still a sinner, you had to wait in purgatory until you paid off your debt, for every sin, you got an extra amount of time, longer or shorter depending on the sin. At least that is what I was told.
I know it does not make sense.None of it does. That's why I am not christian anymore.
Well, yes and no. Purgatory is a separate idea from what I'm talking about, one mostly believed in by Catholics. Purgatory is a place of limbo where people are sent and "evaluated" before being sent to either Heaven or Hell as their final destination. I know of few Christians who believe in Purgatory, but I do know some who believe punishment in Hell is not everlasting.
Oh Tartarus, that is what the underworld is called in Greek mythology. That is where Heracles' earthly shade resides and his god-body is on Mt. Olympus.
@infinitusverum You are confused because the concept and the process by which it came to be what it is now, is very confusing. New testament writers borrowed some concepts from the Persians (Zoroastrians).
There is a one hr show entitled "The History of Satan", produced by the History Channel that goes deeper into the ever evolving idea of Satan and Hell.
Hell, as a flaming place of eternal torture, is not a Jewish idea but the Christian leaders took to it with glee.
Macnutz, Thank you for taking the time to reply and pm. I shall look this up and watch it, to lessen my confusion. (Although I shall remain baffled by most other things in life.!)
@infinitusverum Sadly you will still be baffled about this Satan stuff but perhaps less baffled. It is full of bafflement from start to finish, like so many other things. :)
The original idea of Sheol sounds even better than Heaven/Hell. xD ..but then, no one would fear religion and no one would buy into it if that was the case.

It depends on how You define "Hell"
In Norse mythology, Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead.
-or-
a place of suffering and punishment in the afterlife
-or-
Hell, Michigan USA 48169
Though to answer Your query in good faith, Yes, to all the above... and beyond... I suppose.

Probably the other way around: on which page does the bible speak of 'hell'?

And what about King Sha'ul, when he asked the necromancer woman to summon the soul of Shmu'el from the dead?
according to this story in the bible there is life after death in judaism.
In the book "Reshit Hohma" there is many details about the things that going to happen after death.

I dont see how you can use a quote from job. Job could very easily be wrong since he wasn't a prophet or anything

If only prophetic books can speak authoritatively on Hell, that excludes virtually all of what the bible has to say on the afterlife.

So Hell is a NT idea, where the Demons shall go.
The grave is where we all shall go, or is it hades?
Then hades will be cast into hell, so why not go straight to hell? Hmmm... see confused.
