You know what...my two greatest ambitions in life were: 1.) To meet Princess Diana in real life and 2.) Fly on Concorde. Sadly, those two dreams will never, ever come true for me now.
I used to cycle home under the flight path of concorde as I crossed the Thames on my commute home every day. Sadly this is a sight my kids will never experience. Concorde - the world is a lesser place without you
Great clip, and if I'm not mistaken, its 4th October 2003, as I was in the lounge in Heathrow T4 at the time awaiting its arrival around 5 mins after you watched the road crossing happen.
@WiiForever302 Well yeah <3 its far more beautiful, but i think its unfair to say it makes the A380 shameful, the A380 is indeed better in a number of ways, its more efficient, more modern, easier to fly, but yeah concord, concord shall always be special.
Anyone else spotted the registration code for the aircraft? Pity BA may not be with us much longer! (Just like the registration code!) I suspect someone with the initials RB is arranging finance to buy BA out!
Some peoples comments about it 'just' being an aircraft are idiotic. Concorde was an engineering marvel and a piece of art that will forever stay with us. (This isn't just an aircraft, it's a human achievement)
@Q1nn ...Yes anddyx...you must be a numbskull or an American kid..or both...One things for sure, the USA will never be capable of such an engineering acheivement with such style and grace....So you will never go on your Hols at Mach 2 either...got it?.
Ahhh The eastchurch crossing gates!!! Reminds me of many a night shift in the fog being stuck there in a patrol car guarding them while they were stuck open!!!!! Real shame that she has gone ;-(
The Concorde was grounded just because it was not a cost-effective aircraft. Huge operational costs were the aircraft's downfall, despite the innovative technology. Still, the Concorde remains a milestone yet to be overcome
This was a stunning aircraft. Even tho I had the privilege of working around it, it stopped me in my tracks every time it passed over me. I blew it a kiss every time. If what had happened to it in Paris had happened to a 747 they would never have been grounded. God knows the Paris Fire Brigade/Checkers/US aircraft debri had a lot to answer for. They took away our Concorde. When you see genius and beauty in your lifetime, take a picture, it may never come your way again.
I do realise that 18 of the 20 aircraft built are exhibits.
I do realise that some of them were transported by other means rather than flying.
Their wings were disassembled for transportation, but were obviously put back afterwards, so I dunno why you said it's sad - because they got them put back on.
I remember in 1978 being a small boy (about 6) at a air show. We were standing as close to the runway as permitted. At that age Concorde was stuff every little boy dreamed of. We all wanted to grow up and be a Concorde pilot. Sitting on my dads shoulders i remember seeing her start the take off run, getting faster and closer to us with every second. Overwhelmed with excitement, pulse racing and fixated in magical wonder as she rotated right level of us. ......
.....The noise was defining. I was yelling out but could not hear my voice. The air shook and the vibration went right through my body down to the bone. Memories of that childhood moment and the excitement it gave me has stayed with me always. Last year i was at Duxford looking at Concorde. Not far from me there was a father with a couple of kids about the age i was back in 1978. They were looking with.....
...interest and it made me feel a little sad for them. They were just looking at a lifeless exhibit and I thought...your never going to see it alive, hear that noise, feel that vibration or experience for yourselves what it was that blew apart the mind of that little 6 year old boy all those years ago. Sod the expense of it. Few thing have captured the imagination like this aircraft. There were other options on the table that would have kept this dream alive. Instead they let it die.
watching that makes me feel sad and ashamed to work for the company who since, hold no reverence for once operating the pinacle of civil aviation and have not expressed one iota of imagination of what to do with her since. I expect they actually want her off the airfield an out the books for good!
What a beautiful aircraft she was. Never had the chance to fly in her but was in G-BOAG in the Seattle Air Museum, and the prototype at Duxford. Love the BA Commercials! Best Airline Ive flown long haul! Dave in Dublin
No theyre not. And if you mean the Sonic Cruiser, it flies just under the speed of sound and therefore is subsonic. The project was cancelled 2-3 years ago.
Its a shame that future generations will never know how spectacular this aircraft was and what could be achieved in the 1960's. One day there will be a replacement that will be faster , safer & more fuel efficient but it would never hold a candle to Concorde and probably be characterless , Blue skies forever Concorder!
i agree what a pain u have to drive all way round the ba hangers to get to bloody harlington corner....my dad used to work in there when i was a kid, and i remember going over there in the sixt's...long time ago..
Like the music by the way, bit different from me usual motorhead and stuff...
Such a shame they closed that road, but it was inevitable. Thanks a lot to those damned terrorists! I still think it was a bit pointless closing the road, and yet still allowing people to board flights with their faces and bodies covered by religious clothing, and not properly identified. Just go to terminal 3 departures and you'll see it all.
whilst doing my basic training at army training regiment pirbright, i used to love seeing concorde come over, it is sorely missed! it was the only thing that could make everyone stop and look up, no matter how many times you had seen her.
Well the crash was because the tyre burst on take off and a large piece hit the fuel tank in simple terms so alot of money had to be done on basically redesigning the plane such as making it have thicker tyres stronger fuel tanks e.t.c. and it got to the stage of being far too expensive to maintain as passenger numbers were falluing aswell.
i wish this was still in service.i could not imagine being on a plane for over 10 hours to get somewhere when there was once a plane that could get you there in about 3..maybe one day it will be back in service and i will get to go to london...
No, not because it crashed at all - they spent a lot of money on an extensive successful return-to-service modification plan after the crash.
The downturn in premium transatlantic business travel after 9/11 was the main reason, particularly fro Air France. BA may have got through that, but Airbus' withdrawal of the type certificate was the nail in the coffin.
It was written for the British Airways ad (do a YouTube search for 1989 British Airways Commercial to see it), and was inspired by French opera called Lakme by Leo Delibes.
I am planning on starting up an airline called Bradley Jets! When I am successful, and have money that I can invest into the concorede. I will pay the company who make concorde (who is it? boeing?) to make me two new concorde aircrafts! I will work with them to develope the Concorde Duo! It will be up-to-date with all the latest safety requirments so there can not be any complaints! Then I will proudly be able to announce the return of the concorde, the concorde duo!
was one of the one's that was able to fly on the concorde 1st August 2003 will always stop with me... did arrive at heathrow in plenty of time to enjoy the concorde lounge the champagne, the food the Molton & Brown massage loved it... and all the planes having to wait till the little beauty took off getting us to New York in 3hrs 24mins
The finest aircraft to grace the skies, I think the political scene may have also swayed the 'thinking' behind grounding the concorde. whatever it was i am just glad to have made it to JFK in 2hrs and 52mins.
it's possible, few people are trying to give its wings again, before they can give its wings back to the concorde, they will need to find what cables go to where, and find ALOT of hydrulic fluid... becuase before retirement of the concorde, they disconnected the crucial cables that made it able to fly, and removed every single drop of hydrulic fluid..... i really hope boeing can overcome the a380 becuase airbus didnt support the concorde so thats why the concorde lost its wings for flight.
dear santa..

The finest aircraft to grace the skies, I think the political scene may have also swayed the 'thinking' behind grounding the concorde. whatever it was i am just glad to have made it to JFK in 2hrs and 52mins.
What a machine.

it's possible, few people are trying to give its wings again, before they can give its wings back to the concorde, they will need to find what cables go to where, and find ALOT of hydrulic fluid... becuase before retirement of the concorde, they disconnected the crucial cables that made it able to fly, and removed every single drop of hydrulic fluid..... i really hope boeing can overcome the a380 becuase airbus didnt support the concorde so thats why the concorde lost its wings for flight.
