I'm not a fan of steroids, myself, BUT to deny Barnett's skill level is pretty retarded.

Not only is he a WORLD jiu-jitsu champion (black belt), he's a catch wrestling SPECIALIST. You know who else is a great catch wrestler? Kazushi Sakuraba—i.e. the man who broke Renzo's arm and handed Royce his first loss. Without catch wrestling, shoot wrestling, AND pro wrestling, MMA would NOT be where it is today. Period.

You got part of the history right. But I'm talking about stuff that came WAY before Karl Gotch—i.e. post-Civil War traveling circuses where strongmen offered CASH for people who could pin or submit them in a "no holds barred" matchup.

Because it welcomed a wide variety of combatants, catch wrestling inherited forms of judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, etc.—with an emphasis on SCIENTIFIC submissions. In essence, early catch wrestling was one of the early forms of MIXED martial arts.

Furthermore, the reason why I mention shoot wrestling is because it's a cross-breed between the real (MMA) & fake (pro-wrestling). To help rebuild the UFC (post-Zuffa purchase), there was an emphasis on sports entertainment—personalized entrances, pyro, Carmen Elektra, celeb interviews, Tank Abbott & Ortiz cutting "heel" promos, etc.

I mention all this because you asked, "how is [Barnett] considered a martial artist?" And all I've said, thus far, is simply to rebut your "point."
