Typical 60s pseudo intellectual. Never having to face reality he would sit in the back and criticize. But when his own ideas were put to the test the result was the disaster we have in Iran. Other examples include Marx and Lennon.
Actually his ideas never properly went into practice in Iran. The current leading politicians in Iran even turned their back on the actual point of the Revolution, its values and its goals. Also I'm not 100% sure, but I think Shariati was against a clerical-dominated political system and Islam, and that's why he would sometimes be critical of the injustices of the Safavids.
It is easy to come up with deceptively good sounding ideas.. But it should have been evident right from the beginning that no government based on Islam was going to be good for Iran. First question to a supposed intellectual should be: what about non Muslims? What sort of Utopia is it that has no room for anyone who is not a Muslim? Mixing religion and politics is doomed to be a failure whether the government is run by clerics or not.
BTW another point on the clerical thing: the Revolution wasn't meant to bring in a government that was ruled by clerics. Khomeini lied to everybody, and that is again another example of how the Revolution strayed from its original path.
It wasn't all meant to turn out like this, and Shariati would be so angry at how things have turned out in Iran today!
There was no single revolution ideology. A number of separate groups including: islamists; communists; {so called} intellectuals joined forces. With help from Iran's enemies i.e UK and some others they brought down the Shah. Next in-fighting began. Islamists with backing from Khomeini won and trashed their former allies. Nothing new here, just history repeating itself for the millionth time. Was this a surprise to you?

Dr. Ali Shariati referred to the dualism in religion. He referred to the corrupt ruling theology which was the corrupt tool of the imperial Establishment, as opposed to the Enlightened theology , with its inclination to revolution, involving the Emancipation of the masses along the lines of enlightened thinking, and new and progressive ideas for the fair and equitable administration of human affairs. Khomeini's Islamic Revolution was Enlightenment, compared to the wahabbi dickheads of Arabia.

As an example, he wrote in late 1960s that revolution in a country whose people are not developed intellectually and socially will lead to tragedy. How impressive is that ! In the foreword to the Iranian edition of the Protocols, it is said that the Jews are a satanic enemy,etc, but that Iran takes care not to add its own opinions.

Number two, I have been to Iran many times and never seen that racist forgery is distributed. Number three, many Jewish people live in peace in Iran and have done since before Islam arrived there. Actually his ideas never properly went into practice in Iran. The current leading politicians in Iran even turned their back on the actual point of the Revolution, its values and its goals. Also I'm not 100% sure, but I think Shariati was against a clerical-dominated political system and Islam, and that's why he would sometimes be critical of the injustices of the Safavids.

It is easy to come up with deceptively good sounding ideas.. But it should have been evident right from the beginning that no government based on Islam was going to be good for Iran. First question to a supposed intellectual should be: what about non Muslims? What sort of Utopia is it that has no room for anyone who is not a Muslim? Mixing religion and politics is doomed to be a failure whether the government is run by clerics or not.

BTW another point on the clerical thing: the Revolution wasn't meant to bring in a government that was ruled by clerics. Khomeini lied to everybody, and that is again another example of how the Revolution strayed from its original path.
It wasn't all meant to turn out like this, and Shariati would be so angry at how things have turned out in Iran today!

There was no single revolution ideology. A number of separate groups including: islamists; communists; {so called} intellectuals joined forces. With help from Iran's enemies i.e UK and some others they brought down the Shah. Next in-fighting began. Islamists with backing from Khomeini won and trashed their former allies. Nothing new here, just history repeating itself for the millionth time. Was this a surprise to you?

2) He believed in mixing Islam politics. It is wrong in any form whether it is the Islamic Republic or any other form.
3) He was highly influenced by Marxist ideology. Another failed idea.
4) We deeply disliked pre-Islamic Iran. Who is he to tell me what to think of my history?

I guess it comes down to how people interpret what he had to say. The key is to understand what he had to say as a whole. Taking some parts out of context doesn't do him justice. Sure there were errors in what he had to say, but overall the IRI doesn't even come close to his ideas.

Dr. Ali Shariati referred to the dualism in religion. He referred to the corrupt ruling theology which was the corrupt tool of the imperial Establishment, as opposed to the Enlightened theology , with its inclination to revolution, involving the Emancipation of the masses along the lines of enlightened thinking, and new and progressive ideas for the fair and equitable administration of human affairs. Khomeini's Islamic Revolution was Enlightenment, compared to the wahabbi dickheads of Arabia.

God bless his great soul. Most of his ideas are relevant today as they were before. As an example, he wrote in late 1960s that revolution in a country whose people are not developed intellectually and socially will lead to tragedy. This is exactly what happened in the aftermath of 1979 Iranian revolution.
