  • Is it just me, or do the cutting noises the machine makes relaxes people? I go to this video when I need to calm down...forever alone.

  • Looks an awful lot like a really slow broaching process more than drilling....

  • @danbowkley Yep, but it beats doing it on a manual press! Especially a 1/2" key to wake those muscles up in a morning

  • @danbowkley

The title is "Cutting" not drilling and the text describes the process as planing.

  • It's truly amazing how many lame asses see something going up and down and all they can think about is porn. This is a good idea for a home shop doing a small amount of square holes. If I had a number to do making a machine to cut the hoke would be a better idea. But this works just fine.

  • Is this what porn looks like to an engineer? 2 minutes of driving the chuck up and down through a hole and accomplishing absolutely nothing? I'd have to be paid to sit through another 5 minutes of video of that.

  • @gymkhanadog

You must be another round peg, too big to fit in a square hole.

  • @gymkhanadog I'm not sure you're comprehending the operation. Stick to your day job.

  • dude not at one point did i see the drill "drill" the freaken hole this was so wack

  • A robot stumbles across this video and thinks it's watching porn

  • buy a broach the required size or take a lot of strokes with the quill

  • Xbox player, that says it all !!!

  • Just waiting for cutter to snap.... bit to bendy for me

  • *yawn* woops sorry fell asleep what happened?

  • @stimps90

I suppose this is the response you would expect from the short attention span computer games players.

  • @mparkerlisberg Or maybe it's a boring subject, especially to people unversed in it.

  • @BloodskullMannoroth Then why the hell did you watch it???

  • @sanity599 'Twas linked to me.

  • @mparkerlisberg HEY PLAYING COMPUTER GAMES REQUIRES PLEN

  • this process is working like slotting machine.

    good..

  • Would chucking a square needle file do the same?

  • @BerkeleyGang

A couple of points, files do not have a round tang so how would you grip it in the chuck? If you griped on the hardened teeth you would damage the chuck., square things don't chuck well.

Square files don't have square corners, but are slightly rounded.

You could use a softened, re-worked and re-hardened round file as a cutter.

  • @mparkerlisberg: The needle files I've found have round ends that can be chucked. Nicholson is one manufacturer, but there are similar Chinese clones, as well. There are also square jawed collets that might be used for larger files with square ends.

  • Would also state you could file 8 times quicker and to finer tolerance.

  • @jhareng

After cutting 8 square holes the hardened carbon steel cutter was getting blunt and flexed when doing the initial cut, a few more strokes are needed to finish on size to compensate.

It is somewhat less strain on the muscles than filing and the square holes are precise, square cornered and perpendicular. If you served an apprentiship and completed the test of filing the ball bearing into a true cube then you could file the holes with the necessary precision, but it would be hard work.

  • Look at the deflection, slightest touch spindle veers way off, .

  • @jhareng yea.. how long do u suppose that asian drill press will last doing that?

  • @msgmonly I would say its already fit for knackers yard.

Nothing to filing square holes, used to do it every day on irreplaceable parts to microns.

  • LOL haha

  • A nice result, but a tedious process!
