@tsukasa2k6 nono. it's an ongoing joke in Fandom. Meiling is a Youkai from the Asian mainland (presumably China) and so there was alot of confusion how to pronounce her name (Meiling vs Meirin). Someone on 4chan suggested to end the confusion, to simply call her by her appearance: China.

So the name was born. since then, it's spread simply because so many people have gotten used to calling her "China." It didn't help that the official post-release patch of IaMP simply called her "Chinese Girl!"

Actually the confusion wasn't Meirin vs Meiling, it was "Kurenai Misuzu" vs "Hong Meiling". The confusion started, because no know really knew if the Kanji should be read in the japanese or in the chinese way. And because of the many chinese references in her stage in EoSD, Meiling was called "Chugoku"(China)... poor girl T_T

Later, in an interview, ZUN stated that the correct spelling is "Hong Meiling". But the fandom kinda stuck to China^^

@Ryuu15 Well, actually that's quite a lovely nickname in my opinion. Waaaaaaay better than annoying fans dubbing characters "delicious chicken" or "idiot".

But thanks for the background info. I didn't know *that* was the cause for that nickname of hers. I simply assumed it was because the subtitle below her name reads "Chinese Girl" in the first place.

Either that, or saying her name out loud three times makes her appear, in a berserker-lunatic-über charged rage, that'd bring doom to us all... Who knows? ^.^
