I love this album...but I can't help wonder what people who haven't heard it in context are thinking. And that's not even considering the fact that the song itself is chopped in half.
im not sold on the women in white- she has a nice voice but in this performance i just felt like she was just an extra in the song (which yeah she was) but i didnt feel like she quite fit with the band.
She technically is an extra. If you listen to the whole album, which is a thematic story, you'll understand her presence more. Her name is Shara Worden and is a guest on this album. My Brightest Diamond is the name of her band/project.
Agreed - Shara Worden sounds like Grace Slick & is AWESOME. Check her out in "My Brightest Diamond." @ Binff: The Decemberists w/o Colin Meloy is like cornflakes w/o milk. He's said that this look is "in character" as the album Hazards of Love is a rock opera. I don't know if that helps anyone get past the bangs :-). Any1 not familiar with The Decemberists should check them out. Start w/ The Crane Wife album. Starting w/ this album might be intese. Or lookup video for 16 Military Wives.
fav song of the album, Shara Worden makes my life. I'm a new fan & just found out a friend of a friend takes guitar lessons from Funk. Am insanely jealous.
Yes, she sings for Lavender Diamond. I may be incorrect but I don't think they have ever come close to rocking like this, in fact they do the opposite. I want an entire album that sounds like the second half of this song. Which doesn't include Mr. Swoopbangs singing, and includes Becky Stark singing at the top of her lungs.
I may be the one incorrect, but I don't think people usually listen to the Decemberists for "Mr. Swoopbangs" and his singing. I think it may be safe to assume most listeners are intrigued and drawn to Colin Meloy for the stories he tells in his music. His singing is just an added bonus. I'm glad to see that by more appearances in such public venues as the Tonight Show, maybe he'll get the wide-spread recognition he deserves for his brilliance.
Umm...Dave...consider listening to the whole album, start to finish. The band, entire, spins quite a tale in Hazards of Love (I was so psyched it got a bit of air time on prime time). Let's just say, "Emo boy" makes a lot more sense in the context of a shape-shifting faun...hapless maiden...vengeful queen...debauched villain...plus you can dance to it.
Totally agree with you there; as much as I love The Decemberists (and love them quite a bit I do), I've had kind of an issue with them releasing singles off the Hazards of Love. To me, hearing these songs without the context of the entire album does not do them any sort of justice at all... but I will defer to The Decemberists' judgment and executives who decided to release singles for this album. They obviously know what they're doing, I suppose.

I really fucking love the 2nd half of this song. I love that woman's voice, and that guitar fucking destroys. Emo boy I could definitely do without. Am I wrong to just want the lady in white and rocking guitar man to break off and form their own band?
"Emo boy" is the person responsible for the majority of the Decemberists' lyrics and arrangements, which apparently you enjoyed by your comment. And the lady in white does have her own band; she's a guest vocalist on the "Hazards of Love" LP, and not a member of the Decemberists.

I absolutely love Shara Worden. In her higher range, she kind of reminds me of Beth Gibbons.
Or maybe that's just me projecting.
She's gorgeous and amazing. Her character on this album couldn't be any better!!

The girls in green and white aren't shown on their myspace profile as official members... I wonder why. :/
I think the girl in white should be the lead singer, anyway. :P

A person's size has very little to do with their vocal cords and their ability to project their voice.

Shara Worden has an amazing voice.
And the Decemberists were wise to use her on this album. They're awesome.

this song is so weird out of context. Incredible, but it needs to be in the cycle for it to really work

No, Becky Stark is from Lavender Diamond. The "lady in white" that person was referring to is Shara Worden from My Brightest Diamond.

Ok I had the wrong band, but still, you won't find anything that sounds like the 2nd half of this song in My Brightest Diamond either.

Huh? You obviously haven't listened to My Brightest Diamond. Go listen to the track "Inside a Boy," it sounds very much like this.
