I have never heard this man play Liszt before !!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! He makes it fiendish. The personality is there from the first note. This man had a scary talent.Question of line,technique ,character,tone .All is unquestionably surpassed more than imagination can expect when he plays. How is it growing up in 1970's his recs were never seen.Horo& Rubinst recs were everywhere.

@lovesGenet He was a perfectionist to the max... hence why he didn’t make many recordings... also, he wasn’t considered to be as musically enchanting as some other pianists, but after listening to his Totentanz, that thought wouldn’t cross your mind, I am sure... was an absolutely unbelievable performance.

Anyone who knows anything about classical pianists know him to be one of the finest in history-up there at or near the very top with the best ever.Only he is in the class of Hoffman,Horowitz,and Rachmaninov.

It's not the best permormance of michelangeli,I mean,it's a great piano playing,but there was not so good feeling with Kubelik(happens with great and hard personality),not so good feeling,like the 1st Liszt Piano recording.Michelangeli played better and better again,as many pianist remember!It was the dark side of the pirates and not authorized recordings(there is the good side,too)great playing,however

I have got this recording and it seems to me that the conductor is Rafael Kubelik with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino della Radiotelevisione Italiana. Recording made live 28 of april 1961 in the Auditorium from RAI in Torino. I know this recording since very long and i recognised it

@darthdidious Wonderful performance though it is, I'm pretty sure this is in fact NOT the recording with Kubelik from Turin, but the one from 1962 with Gianandrea Gavazzeni and the OSRAI-Rome. Timings match and the recording syncs perfectly with mine when played simultaneously down to the last detail; you can even hear him miss the same 4 repeated D5s start of bar 18 of Variation 5 (The "fugato" passage; 0:27 of this clip, he plays E5s...a finger slip from Michelangeli, rare as it may be!).

Gavazzeni was a master conductor and a first-rate accompanist, being an opera conductor of genius. This is from a performance at the Vatican before Pope John the 23rd, shortly before his death. One wonders what he may have been thinking during the performance.

I am playing it this year. Its a bitch. horrendously difficult. ABM's recording will never be surpassed. NEVER.

Non sono del tutto daccordo: di virtuosi che si esercitano giorno e notte su pianoforti eccezionali ce ne sono fin troppi, ma se le esecuzioni non sono tutte uguali vuol dire che la genialità è anche nell'esecutore. Del resto cosa sarebbero le pagine di uno spartito se nessuno fosse in grado di animarle? Il genio del compositore vive grazie al genio dell'esecutore (non solo alla sua abilità) altrimenti morirebbe con lui.
