the principle behind this method is exactly the same as behind long multiplication, the only difference is that the adding part is done in the head and not on paper, which means this method needs less writing and more thinking. but other than that, it's equivalent to long multiplication.

one i leanred works for number 100-109 so lets take 105x109. first sense both have 1_ _ and the otehr has 1_ _ the answer number wouls start with 1. now the last digits _ _ 5 and _ _ 9 add them so now another part of our answer is 114 than muiltply the 9 and 5 out it in the number and the answer is 11445 see thats simple too

i timed myself doing a few double digit multiplications and the "original" way was quicker,although that doesn't mean much given the bias of familiarity. when doing this form of multiplication mentally i found this method harder because i had to keep track of and add the cross multiplication numbers plus the number i'd carry over as well as the final answer as it formed.
