I think religion has nothing to do with it. Arvo part is an extremely gifted composer, being a believer doesn't mean there is a god, it is merely his muse. God wishes he could write music like this.
There is something in the music of Arvo Pärt that you could never put in notes ... It is the expression of his devoutness and faith ... This music is meant to be heard not only by the visible audience, but also by a special, invisible being ... God ... I think that is what makes his music so special among all the contemporary composers.
@amorsse - I'm sorry but you make a mistake. It is correct. This performance, this clip, is indeed from the album 'In Principio'. On 'Lamentate' you'll find a different version, a cappella performed by the Hilliard Ensemble.
I find it similar in some ways to the organ on Part's 'Pari Intervallo'. Very beautiful! I love Part's choral. Particularly 'Nunc Dimittis' and his 'Seven Magnficat Antiphones'. This ranks up there too, though!
@RedFrostIndustries: well it´s quite hard to describe actually, because it has that tricky "õ" in it. If you´re interested, Google "õ pronounciation" and click on the first link that comes up (everything2). You should find a pretty useful short account on Estonian pronounciation, including that infamous õ.
Great video. One small remark though: the conductor´s first name is spelled "Tõnu", not "Tonu". These small signs on the vowels make quite a big difference in the Estonian language:)
Thanks for input. Am I alright to mention God, etc if it is obviously "spiritual" such as Russian Orthodox chants...or is it still better to steer clear of that wording? Is there site giving suggestions such as yours so I do not trip over myself?
As gregorio66 hints, this piece is actually Da Pacem Domine, not In Principio. And the performers are the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and (I think) the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. But THANK YOU for adding this to YouTube! Love it.
Sorry, but the piece is written for Choir a cappella and with a pulse of 40. But who cares...

Pärt's work is of such a supernatural beauty! He has the gift of conveying very much in just a few musical notes :)

Oh my gosh! I was at this concert! I can see my head for like 2 seconds when it pans to the audience!
Anyways, Arvo Pärt's music is sublime, and the EPCC performs it soo well. This was an amazing concert.

This music comes from far away out of another dimension which we cannot know, but it touches our lives in a miracolous way.

First time I heard Part I felt almost hynotized, this sense remains with many of his work. He is a sort of Bach: our era's Bach.

Bach, doesn't it?
