I don't wanna 'dislike' this, but I have to say to only feature Duke's Travels is the equivalent of listening to Supper's Ready up to "And it's....." and then stopping. Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song just blows my mind. It's absolutely amazing that music like this was made in 1980. From 4:45 to 6:20 particularly, I understand the influence in so many bands I listen to now, and yet Genesis did it better 30 years ago !!!!!!!
@portero36 Mainly progressive metal bands. Nevermore and Symphony X are the only ones coming to my head but I'm sure I heard Genesis' sound in other bands of the same category as well as others in more accesible genres.
Interesting how almost every Genesis track I look up, there are always comments saying this is the best track or this is the best album. YOU GUYS ARE FKING WRONG!!! Just joking:) Actually it really says something about a band that has so many of these "best album/songs" comments on so many videos.
easily my favourite track of all time. reminds me of my childhood, family, holidays and my own travels.bought this on tape, record and dvd, and i believe that every member of my family has a copy of duke.
Ciao a tutti. Se vi piace questo splendido brano, per favore, guardate ed ascoltate la mia versione cover! "Duke's travels cover by pino lettieri" one man band version!
This is one of the best tracks off Duke. I don't like Misunderstanding, Alone Tonight and Please Don't Ask. But the rest are superb. You probably don't care what I like anyway. I don't know why I'm typing this. But anyway Cul-de-sac is really good.
First time i heard this was when i was 17 in the british army back in the 80's. This lanky Gerodie geezer would lie in his bed opposite me listening to this in his headphones and would shout out "I am the on who guided you this far!.." Used to shit the life outta me. I was into Public Enemy at the time and thought the bloke was an absolute nutter! Lying in his bed flailing his arms about doing the drum strokes. Then he lent me the cassette and I never gave it back. Top tune this, cheers Pat!
listened this so many times that I recall the cryptic youtube address to this already! Why did I miss this in 1980's in the first place??? This time I was listening to human league and ABC. Think I was 11 those times... Now at 40's I hear this basicly for the first time. THANK YOU!!!!
Although there are a few noteworthy songs post Wind and Wuthering, most real Genesis fans, like me, consider Duke and thereafter, crap. Sorry 80s kids
@woofycalling You're telling me that you listen to this song and "crap" is what comes to your mind?
You obviously have zero ability to think about music objectively, and set aside your homo-erotic fantasies about Peter Gabriel's early 70's gyrations.
@woofycalling though the 80's group will not nessicarily like the 70's prog rock style and vice versa, i will always love this album for the fact that it walks the line between and is neither completely prog, nor pop.
At that time around 1980 i was angry about Genesis making music without Peter Gabriel, now 30 Years later i agree with you this is the climax of this kind of music
allways people say they went comercial pop not understanding the true meaning of prog rock it means non conventional and that peace of music is really progressive,
as making the same as before would have been regressive, so this is a great opening to the 80ies and a decade ahead of it´s time!
One of their best ever. I couldn't think of a better way to end the great album that was duke. One of their last amazing closing epic songs, I still get chills when phil finally starts singing in this just like the first time I ever heard it.
WE MUST ALL UNITE AND HARANGUE WMG TO STOP SHUTTING DOWN THESE SONGS... I turn my friends on to all kinds of songs via Youtube... and WMG is shutting down half this album and counting! I can't hear half the songs RakyMaky posts!
This is the Saturn of Genesis' dark days with Phil Collins. Sad to listen to such mediocre music when more than half of the group are responsible for putting out magical music long before....
@woofycalling 'Mediocre music' do you honestly hear this as mediocre?
I guess it is all subjective, but I personally love this album.
I'm not a Genesis expert or anything and only have a limited understanding of their works ,but I don't think you could ever say this is mediocre music.
Still captures me in a warm nostalgic way. I first heard this whilst driving thru the Blue Ridge mts of Virginia with friends on a beautiful summer day en route to a few days camping in a wilderness area. Now a few beers and ciggies didn't hurt our mood mind you, but the boys of Genesis certainly were the highlight for us, and they took us further than we had planned on going, it was...very special, almost magical really.
@astro10 this one is the best ?? did you listen "Selling England by the pound" ? or "The Lamb lies down on broadway" ? ... they are in another planet ... nothin' to compare ... those album with this one ... !!
@zwartepiet412 you might take a listen to selling england by the pound. i can hardly listen to anything they've done since peter left, but i think my suggestion will change your mind.
This is an amazing song! In my opinion the best instrumental ever of Genesis. It was created on 1980, by the Banks, Collins, Rutherford line-up. It is the evolution instrumental masterpiece, when compared to Los Endos, Whot Gorila?, Hairless Heart and After the Ordeal. It has a bit of all and plus the original sound on F/C key that gives the Duke album its special invisible touch ;)!
@Elrumudhael I think you are exaggerating a little bit... This song is good, but it's very far from 'After the ordeal' and 'hairless heart' beautifull melodies... Sorry
always loved abacab, they never really pushed this album enough, it's a shame, there are some gems on it. would struggle to nominate a favoutite song by them
This whole album was the last really good thing to come out of the entity known as Genesis. Stuff like Abacab and Then There Were Three were pretty schmaltzy. Trick of the Tail was really fine as well, but wasn't Gabriel gone by then?
I'm probably old school too, (Foxtrot, Lamb being my faves) but there's no doubt this is an exceptional album.

Avec cette pièce, le groupe s'est fait quelque peu rassurant.
La multiplication des chansons POP s'est vu offrir une pause avec Duke's travel.
Magnifique composition.
