way fun! this trip was well worth the travels. i've seen dozens of launches but the spirit was a trip in itself. the only regret i have is never seeing both a night launch and a landing : ( i would have shared my own shaky footage but my crappy iphone took a dump before i could sync(oh well). btw, don't get mad about the retirement of the shuttles just take a look at this..nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts135/multimedia/gallery/opf2.html
The bottom of the external fuel tank looked red hot, alot of fire between the shuttle and the tank. There was alot going on here, scary launch.Glad it made it home safe!
@ti994apc In thirty years of shuttle missions, there have been two accidents, and one was on re-entry. So, out of 133 launches so far, 132 have been successful. That's a decent safety record.
@ti994apc i don't know about that.....only 2 failures in 133 missions is a pretty damn good record. any rocket is dangerous and i'm pretty sure the Ares I, Early Soyuz, and even the Saturn V's were more dangerous......
The like button is on the left, not on the right. In 720p 42''HD, best show on earth. Shame. End of an era. Or at the very least the end of big show lauches like this. Awed is the word. As allways.
Discovery and the Shuttles may be retiring this year but they are at no means over. Think about what the space shuttle is: simply that, a shuttle to space, where you can bring cargo and people into orbit. This simple fact reaches far as a shuttle is the only design of a spacecraft that we can sustain for cargo and passengers. Expect more space shuttles in the future. New space shuttles.
@tlages I think we'll have something new. Probably a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle. I doubt it would be called a shuttle though. The shuttles were extremely expensive to launch and a single stage would be a lot cheaper. I had hoped Venture Star would be it.
I was there for the launch. It being my first manned rocket launch, it was almost surreal. Sad that they are going to retire the shuttle. Space travel is one of the best things we do!
@TheChocos0 It usually burns up or sometimes they just calculate it so it will land in the ocean...and dw they dont make it dirty or anything they pick there stuff up
Every time I watch these launches, I'm reminded of what we are capable of as a nation. Hopefully, SpaceX will have their Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon capsule in working order soon so we won't have to get a lift from the Russians.
Discovery is my favourite sapce shuttle,i'm very sad because this is the final voyage for the vehicle......:(:(:(:(=(this is the most responsible shuttle=(
I must say, that I was very tense throughout this whole launch yesterday, considering all of the problems that Discovery had. I don't think I took a real breath until they got up into orbit! Thank the gods that the launch went so beautifully. :)
It was beautiful weather today. Just a slight, cool breeze and blue sky with some wisps of clouds. Just standing there at the top of the bridge over the intercoastal watching it go and thinking only two left and it's over. Hopefully, enough will ask, "What next," and someone will answer, "Let us show you." It's so sad NASA has to be such a victim of idiotic politicians.
yes it was wonderful. i was on the bridge wit my nephew and niece as well. to inner city kids with no concept of why they should stay in school. as the shuttle went up i told them if they apply themselves one day may be they could do something great like that.
I've been waiting 4 months to see this launch. It was supposed to launch on the 2nd of November last year. It's sad that it's Discovery's last flight though.
@ajpnphoto So let's work to keep it going. Please, just sign here, the entire statement is there for you to read, it's a petition to keep our space program going, and raise NASA's budget from the current LESS THAN HALF OF ONE PERCENT to a modest 2% of federal spending.
