okay, so everyone who finds this video offensive, it wasnt ment towards offending the dear people. it was just to be funny. They werent trying to harm anybody. So many movies, musicals, shows. do offending things not to be rude. so if you don't like this or find it offensive, simply dont watch it, I mean really.
Ok the song in the beauty parlor was funny, especially the expired vagina sign -- she signed vagina and then did the movement for an expired license or credit cart, which was fantastic, because it made me think of, like, vagina currency and it sent me off in hilarious directions, but then...well, it could've been sooooooo much funnier, but it just...died...how sad.
I like the way the show relates to how stuff really happens to people and in my mind you all can do no wrong. keep it coming. Dig deep.. I know you've got it!!!
I don't think they meant to offend - the point they tried to make was that Jake thought he was learning ASL from the hair dresser but in fact was not, and therefore his performance was a bust. Actors are expected to know and do anything and everything - dye their hair, learn a new language - for each performance, but often without any support, pay or training from the people that hire them. The frustrations of the acting profession are what this series is all about, hence "The Battery's Down."
I agree... the first episode was good (but not excellent) and the second was okay, but it seems like they've just given up now that they have a following. I mean, they didn't even attempt to use real sign language. =\
And the moral of the story is . . . unless you are the same gender as the person who is playing your twin in a show, don't go out of your way to try and look like them.
I feel like this is turning into an unneeded feud. the fact is, if people were offended by this, that's their own feelings and you can't argue the way someone feels. personally i wasnt bothered at all, but i'm not one to judge how it affected anyone else. i've met jake in the city a few times and he is one of the sweetest people i've met. im sure the last thing he'd want to do is alienate his fans. if he took into account everything that might make sum1 flinch, the show might be really boring
whoa, i'd hate to see what would happen if some of these people turned on an actual television and saw what comedies are actually considered offensive. word of advice, stay away from SNL, comedy central, sarah silverman or anything on a cable network.
this video has nothing offensive to anyone and someone who overanalyzes these jokes needs to chill and realize that there's absolutely no reason why jake would make fun of deaf people. Yes, the coffee had the double meaning but i don't see why it's offensive. When people make fun of my lack of enunciation i find it amusing and this whole episode should be taken not as an insult but as a tribute.

My point was that this ignorance of ASL and Deaf culture is exactly what the Deaf community has been trying to avoid for years. The language and culture are very sensitive to people that treat their disability as a joke. And are you Deaf? Do you mispronounce things because of a disability?
And I know there was no reason to make fun of Deaf people, that is why I was so surprised.
I did not mean to start a feud, I just wanted to point out that this video IS offensive to Deaf people.
Well, it kind of is, but Avenue Q, Spamalot, and all of Mel Brooks's movies/musicals are offensive to everyone, and they're still very popular. Don't see the failure to sing properly as offensive; I think of it more as a nice attempt to learn, and it encourages people to find out what the real signs are, and what Jake was REALLY signing, lol!
I'm actually shocked that people found this offensive. I dont in any way think they were patronizing deaf people, I actually felt the opposite. It came across to me rather that they made fun of the hair stylist's ignorance of the deaf community and her lack of knowledge of ASL. Thus Jake, by taking her advice, had obvious consequences. I guess the tone could have been misread, but honestly the level of crude humor seemed no greater than most PG-rated movies being released by any major studio
I'd say you summed it up best. If that doesn't set the record straight, I don't know what else will. Thanks, aAronsBwayGuy. In fact, that's what I was thinking myself.
I concur. The point is, he wasn't a good signer and he needed to learn how. Because he didn't have time, that song was all he got, and that still didn't help him. I agree with you, YouHumourMe (which you don't, really, because you bring up a really valid point).
You need to work on your creativity. A whole episiode about making fun of deaf people? really? A disability one cannot control? i am apalled that people of such talent would agree to partake in such an offensive episode. there was not one moment i thought was funny.
oh and if you are gonna make fun of a deaf person's speech, you might want to think about what it is like to try to talk if you cant hear! thanks for that waste of 18 minutes!
But the double meaning was obvious- it was imitating the way that a deaf person might speak.
I enjoyed the episode, and at least the beginning of the song, but the second part didn't feel completely comfortable. Its hard to placate everyone, but I feel like it was a little bit tasteless. The rest of the episode and the song were great though =]
I'm sorry guys, but this plot made no sense. There's no way that they would let the reading go on without teaching Jake some sign language. Would they really only have one lesson? And couldn't he have tried to learn it on his own?
I definitely don't agree that they were at all making fun of deaf people, I can understand how you think it's a touchy subject, but I do not think they were purposely poking fun at them, how did you find they were?
I found it offensive as well, but not entirely offensive. some things made me uncomfortable, and i found there was a lot of poor taste in making this episode. However- You didnt lose a fan, and i'll definitely still watch your show.
Wow, that director is SUCH a bitch! First, she doesn't cast Jake for Big Apple, then she makes Jake skip his sign language class to dye his hair! Why not just have the girl dye HER hair, since she can learn to be blind on her own time? And has she ever heard of FRATERNAL twins?

This is truly insulting that you didn't bother to learn ASL (american sign language).
If you thought the signs are accurate, you're wrong.

As the daughter of a Deaf father and hard of hearing mother, I have to say this is the most offensive thing I have EVER seen.
I have been a huge supporter of Jake and Battery's Down since the beginning, but not anymore.
This video is a disgrace to all that the Deaf community works towards.
And I can't believe anyone agreed to be in this terrible video.
Making fun of anyone is not okay, but making fun of an entire culture is just tasteless.
