@theanswer00 You only cut the roots if it is necessary to fit the tree into the pot. In a situation such as this, where a lot of growth is needed, and surface rootage needs to be improved, and the rootball is small, you do not cut the roots.
@drychalice I live in an inland part of Southern California, and we get winter temps as low as the high 20s' sometimes. My house is poorly insulated, so in winter I move the tropical trees in next to the house, and they are kept warm by the heat leaking out of the house at night.
My wife, actually. She's Japanese/Filipino, and she owns the ficus, bouganvillea and other tropical bonsais that I work on. The pines and junipers are mine.
I used about 40% organic potting soil, and the remaining 60% was equal parts decomposed granite, builder's sand, and agricultural pumice. As I write this the tree is dormant for the winter, but has filled the entire pot with roots and has pushed roots through the surface in several places. I will do a follow up video in March after the winter weather eases.
Love it! Love it! Love it! Cant wait to see it in six weeks. I see you have ALOT of trees in the background. I would love to see all of them sometime in the future. Keep em coming! Great job!!
My wife wants to shoot a guided tour of the yard. We have just over 100 bonsais, and my big concern will be making sure they are all free of weeds before the shoot -- a full day of weeding to shoot ten minutes of video.
Hold the tree's trunk base in one hand, and tap the rim of the pot lightly with the mallet, and it slides right out. It is much safer for the tree than trying to yank it out of the pot, and in any event I'm not going to risk a tree I paid $65 for to save a $3 flowerpot.

Future plans include a video tour of the yard, but we need to pull some weeds and do a lot of prep first.

I gotcha. The tree looks great by the way. I can't wait to see it in a month.
