Hi Jesse, I knew my grandpa well. He was teaching me Hawaiian music at his Aloha Ranch in Van Nuys in 1971 before his death. I am named after both my father and grandpa. I'm John Norman Kaye. Although I'm the1st generation mainlander from our family, I still claim our family name. Ieone Kaaihue is my Hawaiian name. I know it but never use it. I'd like to learn how to play this song on the Uke and do a medley sometime in Hawaii. Do you know my cousin Henry Kapono?
Is this the same Norman Kaye who wrote and sang "Snake Charmer" and "Blue Jean Betty" ? I found that old Decca 45 in a thrift store many years ago and have treasured it and listened to it many times - especially "Snake Charmer" with that boss bubbling bass line and great lyrics, real crazy gone.
@KayeKlan Mahalo, John! That site is a nice tribute to your grandfather. Did you know him well? He lived through the most significant years of Hawaiian music.
Nice job !!! My father wrote that for my mother. He's still alive & well living in Las Vegas at the age of 87. Check him out in his prime at wwwMaryKayeTriocom
@KayeKlan Wow! What a delight to hear from the family of the composer! He is an amazingly talented man who made the music seem so effortless. I am glad he is still around to represent the beautiful music he made with your Auntie Mary. Mahalo for listening. Please thank your father for the music he shared with the world.
Mahalo for the lyrics and chords. I learned this song in the 70s as part of a medley with "Hawaii" .The Royal Polynesians taught my filipina instructor when they vistied the Philippines.
If you remember the '60's group, The Surfers, this was one of their signiture songs. What incredible harmonies! The drummer, Joe Stevens, was my uncle thru marriage. Sadly, he just passed away last week Wednesday on the Big Island, where he lived. I hear his voice and the voices of the Surfers when I hear you sing this beautiful song. I love your voice and your guitar accompaniments. Mahalo for posting and sharing your music!
What a wonderful family musical history you have! I do remember the Surfers from recordings my mother had. One of the members was my mother's Kamehameha classmates.
From my mother's influence and recordings we had around the house, I love the old songs. Her uncle by marriage was falsetto singer Joe Keawe, who was active during Auntie Lena's era,
wow. his voice is just beautiful!
