austrian german and "standard"-german is very different.
standard german is spoken in north-west germany.
the most different german is switzerland german. very hard to understand and speak even for germans.
btw arnold schwarzennegger speaks austrian german - not standard! recognize that :D

@sin13377: yeah, me, myself and i live in germany :p i have to say that you're right, when you split the country into those four parts, but these are just the most-known accents/dialects for the regions north, south, west, east. but not everybody in western germany speaks ruhrpottgerman. at least i live in western germany (not in the ruhrpott) and i don't speak it. ;) in westphalia, not in northrhinewestphalia, but in westphalia the "best" or purest german is spoken. i'm pretty sure about this.

Hochdeutsch stammt aus der gegend über hannover ungefähr (daher wurde es genommen u als ""normales"" deutsch bezeichnet) also aus dem norden ^^;

@JJG85 Yes, I agree with you. I come from Nordrhein-Westfalen in germany and I'm speaking standard german called " Hochdeutsch". It's true, we have many difficulties to understand austrian- and especially switzerland german! Also it's hard to understand "sächsisch" and "bayerisch", german areas in the east and south of germany. But it's so funny to see the "typical" germans, from american side !
