It was this production of West Side Story back in 1982 by Bernstein that I discovered the incredible voice of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Ever since, I have been a fan. The chemistry between Kiri & Carreras is magical… the whole piece is really. I also love the way Bernstein conduces as if he were a “wee little elf” … truly amazed by his own brilliant music.
Olfux… many thanks for posting all of these wonderful videos.
Thank you very much for uplaoding this video, I saw it a lot of years ago but could not record it. So it´s been a kind of surprise find it on you tube
Having watched all available on U Tube about the recording of this amazing music.. Lenny is just in heaven with this take. he sings along! he throws kisses at the end. So wonderful to see the composer so over-joyed with execution of his creation.
so insightful when he points out that this opening of act two needs to be approached with a little reserve, given the end of act !.. after all.. this is a play.... not a symphony where the expectation is that each movement is its own thing.
God what an insight into Lenny...I really think he wanted Kiri to come down and sing from the podium next to him...not in a sexual way, but if you watch how Lenny interacts with his artists, he loves them and is full of hugs and tears and he rejoices in their talent...and who would not bath in the talent of Kiri. Amazing scenes into a mastro who waved a baton, put pen to paper, and wrote himself and conducted himself into heaven...We miss you Lenny and you are irreplaceable. We feel your smile.
If you play the overture, you are NOT playing Bernstein's music. He never wrote an overture. One of his students, later on in life, wrote an overture by demand of the original publisher. One Hand One Heart was never meant to be in this show, it was written for Candide. They were both being written at the same time or relatively close in time and a bit of "Cross Pollination" occurred. The song switch was an accident. Lenny loved the error and never changed it!
i love lenny..By the way to all of you, Lenny HATED Mr. Bernstein and Maestro. He said that anyone who is a friend of music and a lover is a friend of his. If you introduced yourself to him and said, Its an Honor Maestro or Mr. Bernstein, he would reply without a wink "Its Lenny to you, son.
u gotta love Kiri & for having the "balls" to do this kind of music as she is usually much more high brow. she sung at Princess Diana's wedding. that is when she came on to the world scene.
If you watched all of the videos you will see in the first video in a rehearsal in bernsteins apt. he asks her to really roll her r's....thats the diction that he wanted.
dude that scratches his back with the french horn lol

I always wonder why opera singers from English-speaking countries seem to use Italian accents when enunciating English words...

The other lovely ladies singing with Kiri are Stella Zambalis and Louise Eideken.....each terrific singers in their own right.

Kiri Te Kanawa is amazing! She even has the accent down, for a New Zealander.
TimonyErt03 3 years ago
Timony. You mean Kiri didn't say "I fell prutty" New Zealand style. :)

Lenni said "Incredible, perfection". He wrote the music, so he should know. There is a clear empathy between Kiri and Lenni.
